Went to yard sales this morning (bout froze my backside off too) and found a couple of plants. One is a Rubber Tree plant (a little bitty one) and I don't have a clue what this is..but for $2.00 each, I felt it my duty to get the poor things out of the cold! lol Need to find out what this is so I can find out how to take care of it!

Yep, we'll both have some serious heat soon! The soil would probably need to be replaced before the Kalanchoe outgrows that pot, at which point I would probably remove the old soil from the roots, replace with new, back in the same pot. This kind of plant can grow in a crack in pavement. If you still have the leaves you trimmed, you can lay them somewhere, like just on a shelf, or on the surface of another pot, and babies should grow on the leaves, with roots! Should make flowers similar to the pic below sometime in the next year. Some people keep their tuberous Begonias alive for summer by bringing them into the air conditioning. Mine had melted well before people got hot! I'm in Alabama, gardening zone 8, that's what the stuff next to my user name means. You can set yours in your profile, then it will show up next to your name when you post. Location has more to do with house plants than a lot of people think. Like in the case of tuberous Begonias! Knowing one's state is usually fine for house plant advice, you can find your garden zone here by typing your ZIP code in the box, hit enter. That's more for outdoor gardening, but can come into play in warmer areas where some 'house plants' can survive living in the ground permanently as well as its' main function of letting people know which plants sold as ground plants can survive in their location.

Begonia, the leaf gives it away - all begonia's have a (sort of) off-set leaf. That is the central line-cum-vein is never in the centre of the leaf, if you know what I mean. Characteristic of all begonias.

Deejaus, could you give me a rough idea of your climate? (Coldest temperatures etc). Reason is, I am wondering is Leonotis (leonurus or nepetifolia) will grow and flower successfully also in hotter climates, eg, equivalent of US zone 10)? Any insights on this would be most welcome!

I think it is a kind of dracaena. Sturdy plant.

This is a spider plant, that's what yours looks like to me. Just no babies on it yet.

Yes it's a Dracena and a very nice one for just $2.00. It will grow wonderful in warm and humid areas with bright light but not direct sun, loves damp (the soil just sticks a bit to your finger when you push it into the dirt) but not wet soil and if you are keeping it inside rotate it every few days at least or it will grow toward the light source. Oh right!, one more thing, try to remember to dust off the leaves once in a while also. They breath through the leaves and if they get to dusty the leaves turn thin and brown and the plant will die. ~~~~heavy sigh~~~~ I wish someone had told me little bit of info.

Well..it looks like it's a Dracena!! Thanks!! This one is in a 4" pot right now. Hope it'll be ok until next Spring when I can repot it.

I thought $2 each was a pretty good price, since both were in pots that I'm sure cost more than that! This yard sale was at a storage building..and I really wondered if these 2 plants had been in the building..in the dark and cold! Both were dry as a bone!!

It's turned off pretty chilly here, so I've brought my plants in from the porch. Inside my house isn't the brightest, so most are sitting under a full spectrum light!
