This is wonderful...except my city decided not to hand out any "I Voted" stickers this year!!! The cheap-skates!!!
But I already voted...we had early voting.

Last fall at the BigBox store, a pack of 8 cans of corn was less than $5 (62¢ each) non-sale. A couple weeks ago, when they were on special plus using a $2 coupon, the price worked out to 89¢ per can. ooof! Growing up, the budget afforded a couple cans of tuna once a month and they were used in casseroles, to feed 8 or 10. (Think noodles in a vaguely tuna-flavored sauce.) I didn't eat any other fish -canned or fresh- until I was an adult. As a kid, we ate what the garden produced, and spent most of July, August and September canning everything possible for meals during winter and next spring. Vegetarianism may not have been a catchword at that time, but most of our meals would have met the definition. Milk, along with home grown eggs, chicken, and rabbit provided any non-vegetable protein; buying a pound of hamburger was rare, although a pound of bacon was on the monthly grocery list. As with fish, I didn't eat steaks or roasts until I was grown up. I was in college when I learned how to bake a pot roast, and then buying one and teaching Mum. I don't remember tramps or vagrants, as such. We almost always had company for dinner, and often they were once-seen strangers, there for a meal and then disappearing into the night. Looking back, maybe they were vagrants, but that wasn't ever an issue. For us kids, who had to peel the extra potato thrown into the pot might have been an issue, but not the circumstances of who was going to eat it. I think kids mostly notice what is pointed out to them.

Uh... yes you would - in a heartbeat! I do agree with Joe that there have been some hiccups along the way especially in 06 but that was the exception to the rule. Let me clarify the "Free Stuff" comments with the Latenight with MTPS Top Ten List 10. The swap is free. (No admission fee try getting into most events for nothing). 9. Parking is free. (I pay $10 to park a mile away when I go to a UT football game!) 8. The lunch is free. (You do need to bring something though.) 7. The lecture is free. (How many lectures and seminars can say that?) 6. The Q & A is free. (Ok the lectures, seminars and Q&A at the Bass Pro Shops Spring Classic are free but most arent.) 5. Hanging out with the nicest folks in the World is free. (How often do you get that opportunity?) 4. Spending the day in a beautiful scenic surrounding is free. (Alright, most public parks are free but to reserve space isnt.) 3. The information from extremely knowledgeable people is free. (The knowledge you gain at a MTPS is pure GOLD.) 2. Swapping plants is free. (You do need something to swap with though). 1. and the side entertainment of watching me unravel and go down in flames twice a year is always free! (Not that its worth much either.) By my count, thats a whole bunch of FREE STUFF!!! Looking back to '06, two years after the fact, makes me now realize that it really wasn't THAT bad! Yes it was a logistical nightmare for a lot of us but lord knows it could have been MUCH MUCH MUCH worse; it could have been a total unmitigated disaster. But thanks to the regular members that stepped into the breach as well as several first-timers (Martha in particular) that helped save the day, I think that it was salvaged to be one of our finest hours. We took what could have been a terribly chaotic situation and made the best of it that we possibly could. Personally I feel like it brought a lot of us closer together sharing a traumatic event. It kinda gripes me that what gets lost is that Marty gave an incredibly excellent lecture on TN native plants! So considering that we had four times what we were prepared for show up... it was ok. That doesn't mean that I EVER want to go through that again; my heart and nerves simply wouldn't take it!!!

Finally found the Crystal Light Sunrise orange drink last week. It is good, but a little sweet for my taste, I like it made very weak. Really prefer the Raspberry Lemonade flavor. A friend said she knows someone that can get it by the case, which is cheaper. We may go in together and get a case of it. Don't get me wrong, I don't drink it like water. One little tub made up can last me several days. I used to be totally against all diet beverages and didn't like the aftertaste they left in my mouth. But I've found I can tolerate the CL made very weak and it is a nice change from plain water.

I wonder if the link to the restaurant you posted above might be to a different one with the same name? The map link from your link points to a spot somewhere in the middle of Rio, pretty far from anything. A good guess would be that that location would be about an hour of driving from Sugarloaf, and looking more closely at that spot on the map shows that seems to be inside a large shopping mall, in a slightly questionable neighborhood. Another restaurant with the same name and logo is located on the edge of Barra da Tijuca where much of the new building for the Olympics took place. Do you remember if the front of the restaurant looked like this? and the view from outside included this dramatic bridge and the distinctive mountain in the background. If you will be only posting food-related photos here can you at least post a link here to you postings in other forums so interested Cooking forum can find them and follow along? I never went to either of the museums you mentioned, so I'd love to see pictures of what I missed. I have been in that area and saw the Municipal Theater, the National Library, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro, the Carioca Aqueduct and rode the trolley across it to Santa Teresa, and on my last trip found Selaron's Stairs, which were created over many years by a local artist I didn't go up the stairs because a couple people warned me that my large camera would make me an inviting target. After reviewing the photos later I discovered that it I had gone up the stairs, I could have met the artist who was sitting there surrounded be a group of people.

The only place we have close by is Starbucks, and I don't even drink coffee! About 15 miles away is a Chick-fil-A. Maybe we can talk our driver into taking us over there.

I voted and went for my free Starbucks. Imagine this--I waited longer in line for the coffee than I did to vote!

The places offering free food, are now giving it to anyone who comes in. You don't need to prove that you voted.

It's a violation of election laws to pay (with coffee, donuts or ice cream) someone for voting.

I came here to say just that maddielee. Starbucks originally advertised coffee only to voters but was called on it. I think all the other places are just giving it away now.

I went in to Starbucks and got a whole bunch of coffees to take back to the poll workers. Starbucks was very nice about it and I tipped the guy who got all those coffees and trayed them up.

Where we go to vote ran out of "I voted" stickers at 10:30 this morning...before I got through there... I was number 299...Denny was number 300. So no freebees for us...lol.

And we canceled out each others vote....argggg!!!!
(We usually do...we never agree on who to vote for...)

No crowds for us this morning...I imagine from 5:00 on will be a mess.

Our local Meals on Wheels prepares the food in a church they use for voting...Well, this morning, all the voters thought they were getting fed! They even came and poured themselves coffee that was for the Meals on Wheels people...A couple tried to come in the kitchen and 1 asked what we were serving.....After all the cases were packed and ready to go, we had to keep tabs that none of the voters helped themselves to the meals...Next election, we better feed these people!
