Had tooth pulled today

Let me first say that I am terrified of the dentist, ergo my teeth are bad and I don't go until absolutely necessary. Well, the tooth started to ache again so bad while shopping today that I came home and looked up a dentist in the phone book. Called the office at 1:45p, told me to come in at 2:30p and I was home by 3:30p with tooth out! The dentist and the entire staff were so nice and caring, one assistant even offered her hand for me to grip during the procedure and I took full advantage. Ugh. I had already been gripping the arm of that dentist chair like I could rip it right off during the simple numbing solution and the shots (eww -shudder), which hurt a little.

Finally when it came to the actual extraction, the dentist asked me "You are going to feel pressure, so let me know if this hurts and if not I'll continue". I said, "Yes, a little, I can still feel it". This as I practically raised out of the chair. He answered, "Well, I was just kidding - it's already out". What??? Oh, man I couldn't believe it. There was pressure and a teeny bit of pain, but I sure didn't know he was pulling it. I apologized for being such a baby, but he says they see it all the time and don't worry a bit. I might add that this was the first time I had ever been to this dentist too.

It sure is different than it used to be. The area didn't even bleed too much. Now to wait and see how much pain I'll be in when this numbness wears off. I have some Tylenol on hand I'm sure I'll need. Whew. Just glad it's all over, and it didn't cost all that much - $223, exam,x-rays and extraction - but since retirement I have no dental insurance. Thank goodness it wasn't more than that.

Well, that's funny! He tricked you, didn't he? He probably does that often to nervous patients. Don't ever be shy to share your fears; that way then can help you more. It's great that you found such a wonderful, caring place. If he approved the Tylenol, I'd suggest taking it right now and through tomorrow. If pain gets out of hand, it's difficult to get it back under control.

And now for the lecture section of this posting (lol):If you can somehow afford a couple trips to the dentist a year, it would be very beneficial to your general health. If they can catch problems before they get too bad, often the treatment is easier and less expensive that it would be. Don't hesitate to ask about prices before you go in.

Ouch!! Sorry you had such a tough day, Schoolhouse. A little late but if you have a bag of frozen peas it may really help you with swelling and pain. I guess he told you all the hints, don't use a straw, keep you tongue away from the site, no smoking, stay with soft food, relx and don't over do things. Oh and rinsing with salt water will help.

I do not know enough about farm subsidies to continue an objective exchange of views along that line. But I think I can defend the concept of subsidies. Ultimately, the fate of farming depends upon the weather. History shows that death by starvation can and has occured to millions during a year (365 days) of drought. The USA stands out as the single country that has consistently been able to offer relief in the form of grain - usually wheat and corn. This grain is stored in towering silos in the farm belt. This stored grain comes from farms, subsidised or not. The subsidies were most likely decided by politicians who govern with the consent of the governed. And I have a deep conviction that they have to. I believe that the economist Adam Smith may have said that Government must do only those things that the people cannot do for themselves. I believe that some of these things are Police and Fire Protection, roads and other communication........and farm subsidies. I have to believe that there are enough brilliant and dedicated meteorologists out there who are working hard to predict the weather to the extent that we will not have to depend upon the contents of those silos for our daily bread. But if Mother Nature decides otherwise I will be very thankful that they are there.

I have an embarrassing experience from the other side. There is a store here which has large tubs with the most beautiful flowers growing that I always admire. One day I parked near to take a walk in the neighborhood. I saw some seeds of Pink Salvia, I thot, I should ask - then I thot - oh no one collects seed. Even a woman was walking toward me, and I thot, oh she probably doesn't work there. So I took a couple of seed heads, and Yep, she said, "Please don't pick our flowers,", so I showed her I had seeds, not flowers, and she said, "We collect our seeds", so I apologized profusely and offered her back the seeds, which she said, "keep 'em". So my plan is - I'm going to send her seeds of my red salvia, my blue, and my white, and Yvonne's salvia, and tell her the story of Yvonne's salvia, and of course tell her about WS'ing. Hope this will make up somewhat for my rudeness! Always ask! I just haven't made up my mind if I should sign my name, or be anonymous - I'm still embarrassed. ellen

i wanted to thank everone for their time.i turned out noone wanted to touch me unless i went in the hospital and came off blood thinner 5 days before they did any thing.i have been in LOTS of pain.So now my heart dr took me off and kept me on a aspirn and now i can start my teeth work,but i am trying to decide to try to keep my top teeth or just have them pulled and put false ones in.i have nothing but teeth aches all the time.i have several just broke off to the gum,they are very soft.one dentist told me she would if she was me just pull all that is left and use a plate [false] for the top,than my medical dr said let them replace the broken ones with a tooth that they use a screw to place in there.the brokens ares are what they call my eye teeth,or vein teeth.so i will have to decide.but i keep a tooth ache and it hurts to eat anything.seems all the nerves are on the tips of all my teeth.judy

Uh-oh. I spent my morning looking for pulls like the first one pictured. I have accidentally bumped into trendy (again!) without meaning to. Our 1936 house came with glass knobs and window pulls that look like the RH stuff and I was hoping to pick something similar for our new kitchen/addition. From what I can see, lots of manufacturers produce similar pulls, usually called window lifts, sash pulls or utility pulls. Some are cheaper coated zinc but the better and more expensive ones are solid brass and can be found plated in different finishes, which varies by manufacturer. You need to try different search terms to find them online because different manufacturers call them different names, but generally they are intended for window hardware, not kitchen cabinets, so if you look at a manufacturer or hardware site under a cabinet hardware subheading they won't show up. So far I have found similar pulls made by Baldwin (solid brass), Samuel Heath (UK), Schlage (solid brass), Croft (UK), Ives, Rocky Mountain, Merit Metal (solid brass), Brass Accents and Deltana (solid brass). One of these may be the actual manufacturer for RH. Some are less expensive than RH, like Schlage and Ives, some are similar, like Baldwin. I don't know why Deltana is so pricey but maybe somebody else can shed light on this company and why it charges more. For the larger sizes, look for what are called cabin door pulls. Merit Metal has some great looking ones, though not cheap. It seems like hardware meant for marine use has to be sturdier, so I have found some great-looking hardware at sites selling to boat and yacht owners (cool lighting for bathrooms, too). I haven't gotten to the glass knob matching yet, so if anybody has done research on those maybe we can start a different thread.

I'm all for pulling teeth instead of spending a fortune trying to save one. I know so many people w/ bad root canal experiences, that at my age, I can't see going through that. Now, if the tooth was in the front, or close to the front, I'd feel differently. I've had 2 back teeth recently pulled and am happy w/ that.

Now that you found a dentist that you like and feel comfortable with, remember this....sooner or later you are going to have to go. It might as well be sooner before it's too late. Avoid the pain and the loss of teeth by going regularly. Hope you feel okay tomorrow.

Yes, thanks all. I know I should go to the dentist but it's just something that doesn't happen. Plus I was dreading hearing that familiar song from this dentist, but he didn't lecture me one bit. I apologized for having so little teeth left,etc., and he just said, "Well, let's hope you go away with a pleasant experience and decided to come back to let us help with other issues". Wow, I really like this guy.

I had pain all night, finally got up at 4am and took a couple aspirin which took nearly 45min. to have any effect. I was afraid to take the Tylenol PM last night before bed in case I fell asleep so well that I'd lay on that side of my mouth all night. I should have taken it. This morning I gargled with the salt water (forgot all about that until I read Lynn's post) and it actually helped. The tooth next to the one that was pulled is the culprit I think, and I can still feel where the needles went in. ugh.

Men are coming tomorrow to cut down the tulip poplar next to the house, so I must take down the bird feeders from the limbs and possibly a section or two of old picket fence. I'm going to tie a scarf over my mouth so cold air doesn't get in too badly. I had planned on shredding leaves today since it will be up to 60degrees, but I suppose I'd better not push it.

I am glad it's over for you. I tense up but I am not really afraid of anything I have had to face. The problem with pulling teeth is that they shift, you need a spacer to prevent that. They did not do root canals when I had some pulled, now my teeth are moving, the two lower front teeth are beginning to over lap and I have terrible meat traps between my back teeth.
