Special Quiet of Fall & Winter - Not so Much

I love to read the poems and thoughts of the wonderful stillness of these times of the year, my favorite seasons. And there is a certain truth to it, except I'm laughing today at the sound of leaf blowers all over the neighborhood. Many leaves have fallen, but this year just as many seem to be stuck with glue to the trees. We all want them down before the snow falls. I went out and shook our viburnums with a vengence, and not one leaf would let go.

And then there is winter with its own wonder and silence. Except for cars rocking back and forth while stuck in driveway ice, snow and ice being scraped off the roofs, and the very loud roar of snow blowers. Oh well, I still love the seasons. How about you?

I used to like fall and winter the most, but as I get older, I'm finding that the cold bothers me more and I hate fighting the snow. Although that first snow is still exciting. I think I'm more partial of spring now...

Tonio: I use that one also, but the other is a lot more microclimate specific with the map. Phil: That's a good general rule. By the way, notice the different dates for seeds or PLANTS for all the brassicas. What's kind of bogus is if you want to go down to Home Depot and pick up some fall/winter seedlings, they won't carry them until xmas or so -- not really a good time to stick a small seedling in the ground with the lack of sunlight, but Armstrong starts carrying them in late August. Yep. I grow quite a bit. Broccoli, Cauli, Bok Choy, Collards, kale, Leeks, Red Onions, Napa(first time this year -- planted seedlings in Dec -- produced real well, though for the longest time, I didn't think they were going to head; Snow Peas were awesome this year -- started in early November; Spinach, Leaf Lettuces, Swiss chard. What I've noticed is most of the Brassicas like to be planted early on in the fall or the mid-late winter -- once again, because of the lack of sunlight. Bok Choy's a hit or miss thing with me though -- I either get some decent plants or the heat or cold(what I've read recently) causes them to bolt. Potatoes -- I tried some reds one year and got some small ones, but since then I've found out that they like a pretty acidic soil and we're a bit on the basic side here in the west. So, before i try again, I'll have to add some sulfur to bring the ph down some. That... and the fact that I'm somewhat of a chile fanatic and since they're both in the nightshade family, it doesn't lend itself to crop rotation very easily. Thanks everyone for your comments. I have more news! First, the first flower should open tomorrow if all goes as well as they have been going these past few days. Second, I just discovered a third plant with a flower scape, one that was also started on August 11th 2008, a cross of (Charisma x Picotee) this time, so that accounts for 3 different crosses blooming in just a year. Judging from the scape on it, it was there all along with the 2 previous ones, it just went unnoticed all that time. I wont post pix here because there are too many that were taken during these past few days, so the best would be to visit my web site to see the progress made in the last few days. I will only post here the pix of the first flowers when they open. Third, in the last few days, with the help of a very good friend, I did a lot of researches to make sure that this was in fact a world's first. With all what I did, all the persons I got in touch with, I can't but reasonably conclude that this is a world's first, that is to successfully go from seed to bloom in a year with a hippeastrum. And that is happening 3 times (out of 90 plants in this batch), not only once. Fourth and last, I've written down all what I did during that year all the steps, everything. It has dates, tables, pictures, etc. Sorry, it will not be published here though since I'm up to 12 pages right now and I'm not through yet. Of course, it is in French for now, it will need to be translated in English later on, but that may take a while since English is not my native language. When, where and how will it be published? no Brenda, i think we're good- you're bringing the rehmannia, right? I think that's all we traded for. You said to surprise you. I'm bringing a couple things and you can pick. John has rehmannia, too- but if yours is already adapted for dry shade i'd rather start with yours. His is in delicious soil and pouted & mostly died when i transplanted it to my clay. :) I had it for a long time and gave it to lots of folks, but now my original's died off from the droughts and i can't recall who all i gave it to. Isn't that funny? Oh well. Ralph, thanks for checking. Figured i'd check in with you first to see if you were bringing some anyhow. I've actually had decent luck with the purples in a few hours of sun- better than the peaches have done. I have a few i can maybe dig up and take rather than spending the money. I'll have to give them a critical eye if they're really fit to dig (they tend to look ok in my yard but not in the ultra groomed garden at the fair). During the drought they reduced down to conserve and are just starting back up really. I'm just really loathe to dig something that's established for just a month or so and then have to dig it right back up just to bring it home again. I may splurge and get one or 2 eye poppers and fill in with something else (i have lots of strawberry begonia). Thanks again.

Glenn - :) Pea - strange story about my h. acetosella. I bought seeds because I couldn't seem to find anyone who had any. I planted all ten and only two came up. I planted one in a container, and it grew so well, I ended up taking multiple cuttings from it and planting them everywhere. I planted one in the south-facing garden and it didn't do much, but it did give me a very few seeds, which I spilled in the courtyard when I was gathering a pot to plant them in. This spring, when I was doing spring cleaning in my courtyard, I noticed seedlings coming up where I had spilled them into the leaves. I plucked them out and potted them up, and now I have so many, I don't know what to do with them. The H. radiatus is the same. I get so many seedlings every year, I never have to even save seeds, which is good, because those pods are so prickly!

I love all 4 seasons, but this year we didn't have fall. AC one day furnace the next. I like winter better than summer, love snow and even ice. I might not like it so well if I had to go to work every day.

You are so right Lindie. Although I see a lot of people raking this year, thank heavens.

I wouldn't give up the 4 seasons for anything.....although a few weeks in Texas in the winter sure appeals to me!!

Fall and winter are my favorites too.

We have pretty mild winters here, and I love it when we get snow.

We left snow, ice and dark winter days behind when we moved to California. I do miss the FIRST day of snow and lightning storms, but nothing else.

Your comments remind me of a cartoon. It shows a man in a kilt practicing a bag pipe in his backyard. A neigbbor comments to another neighbor, "See. There is something more annoying than a leaf blower."

I couldn't live somewhere where there weren't seasons. Summer is my least favorite because I can take cold better than heat. It's cold now...32 but I'll just sit by the woodstove or put a sweat shirt on. I sleep so well when it's cold. Even with AC, it's not the same. Many leaves still on the trees here.

Your post really made me giggle, lindie-mi! Ain't it the truth!

I love the fresh, crispness of fall. Until a few years ago one of the Red Cross fundraisers was a cornfield maze, it was fabulous! It was open every weekend the entire month of October and I really enjoyed working outside at that time of year.
