Place was unusually busy, for a Sunday, and seating was limited.

So of course I politely said YES!

He's 73, a widower

I'm 71, and single

He's still a practicing backruptcy attorney

The father of my son is a retired attorney

He likes to dance

I enjoy dancing

He and I root for the same college football team

He's never been on a cruise and WANTS TO

I'm a cruiser

etc etc etc

Walked me to my car and asked if he could call me sometime.

I said "of course"

The rest is WAIT AND SEE

He could pass as Walter Mathau's twin

Ok, I've answered some of these points above already but once again to clarify: 1. There wasn't enough room at the table, so we did fix a plate but it wasn't just a matter of taking our seats. There were no seats to take. Going to the kitchen was a last resort - I didn't know what else to do. 2. The hostess had not yet eaten by the time we arrived. So she couldn't remain sitting at the table and eat without getting up. She wasn't already sitting at the table. She was standing, fixing herself a plate. 3. I didn't realize how late we were till we got there - there was no set starting time and she lives an hour away, we sat in the Friday-Afternoon-Heading-Out-Of-Town traffic which I don't know if you can imagine unless you live in a place like Houston where it's unpredictable at best and can be horrific. 4. My children, ages 17 and 20 WERE includded - it's a holiday. (for those who aren't Jewish, maybe that's not meaning anything to you, but would you go to a friend's house for say, Easter Lunch, and leave your kids at home, no matter what age? This would be comparable to that. In any case the invitation which was sent via email said, You and your family. There's NO question, the kids were included. 5. She made no attempt to sit near us. She put her plate down as if she meant to sit near us but came back before ever sitting anywhere, picked up her plate, and went to the other table. I don't mind if she sat with us or not, it's just the way she acted as if she was going to, then apparently changed her mind. Even THAT wouldn't have mattered had it been a table with others in addition to just our family. It was just weird, the four of us, sitting alone in the kitchen, no other guests sitting or eating with us, the rest of the entire party in another room, and no attempt to integrate us into the party. Yeah, we're guilty of being late. But as hostess, it's her duty to make us comfortable and welcome, late or not. That's what I think you'd learn in an etiquette class. 6. And again - we were about 20 minutes late. Is that really late enough to turn around after being in the car one hour and not show up at all? If someone were 20 minutes late to my house and let that convince them to blow off my party, I'd be horrified. 7. I HAVE gotten over this, WAY over this. I wasn't going to answer lizzynola's post for that reason and because most of her questions/comments had already been covered in my previous posts. But since the discussion continues, I'm answering. I use microwave ovens a lot but unless you have several large ones, they would take too long to heat food for a crowd. For regular ovens that can hold a low temperature, fully-cooked foods can be kept for hours at 170. Moist foods will hold even longer than dry ones -- just cover them to prevent drying out. But figure an hour or longer to warm it up from refrigerator temperature (depends on how big/solid the pieces -- surface-to-volume ratio and density to the scientifically trained). Remember, you are not trying to recook the food, but warm up the interior without hurting the exterior, so while higher temperatures will heat faster, they'll also recook the foods. If your oven can't hold a low temp, or if the food will be out for serving for a long time, consider a warming device like a Salton hot tray. Food safety is about keeping foods hot (or cold) -- what you don't want is perishable food sitting out at room temperature. Most home-cooked foods are not heated for the long time period or elevated temperatures required to sterilize them, so it's safest to keep them hot or cold. And don't knock cold foods -- I happen to love cold chicken and sliced brisket (but with ketchup or another cold sauce rather than gravy) on a hot day. (Okay, the potato kugel would probably be better hot.) If the chicken (or any other food) is in a flavorful sauce and isn't supposed to be crisp, make it at least a day ahead for best flavor. For stew-like dishes, no reason not to make them as much as two or three days ahead, but the longer they'll sit, the lighter the hand with seasoning. The way I handle after-services meals is to have appetizers ready-to-go in the fridge. That way guests can get comfortable while we serve drinks and wait for everyone to arrive. I serve mainly vegetable salads and pickled vegetables since they are on just about everyone's diet but don't spoil the dinner. If people are likely to be very hungry or dinner will be delayed, gefilte fish, herring salad, deviled eggs or some kind of egg spread are satisfying but light first courses for meat meals. Cold soups are nice, but I reserve any that can't be sipped from a cup without the help of a spoon for served seated dinners. As far as menu suggestions go, our guests really enjoy guacamole -- a family tradition since DH is from Texas, but "good eats" to almost everyone.

Thank you all, it's so nice to have you to understand and be reassuring! I really appreciate the support! When I reread my OP I see it doesn't really express what I'm feeling, and it sounds petty. I really am overwhelmed with it all. I have to take it one step at a time. Today's step is deciding which boards to cut into which pieces for the face frames. It'll take longer than one day for me to figure out, because --- I don't know why, I'm just slow. I really think hormones are playing a role. I'm 52 and some days I just can't think clearly. Thanks for telling me about your "perfect" island and Shaw's sink that will not end up in your kitchen, cotehele. There are probably a lot of us who bought, then rejected, perfectly good things because somehow they just weren't right. Imagine the garage sale we could have if we put all our stuff together! Bmorepanic, I love ideas like that. I might try the panel approach, tho the problem is that the doors are curved on the hinge side. I visualize the edges showing on the side of the panels. I'll have to give it more thought. Malhgold, it's funny you asked that about the SS sink. Other than the commercial look, my issue with the sink involved the placement of the DW. The sink has an integral drainboard on both sides, each 15" long. The whole length of the sink has an integral counter, i.e., it's not an undermount or topmount. So the DW (which could be installed on either side) would have had 15" of the SS counter on top of it, and the other 9" of it would be covered by the marble counter. In other words, the DW wouldn't all be under one counter material. It's hard to explain, I hope that makes sense! That bothered me for some reason, it looked wrong. I never installed it, so I can't say whether I liked working with it or not. I will eventually try CL, I'm just procrastinating on that too! Thank you all again. Hope you have a nice weekend!

I had the "Divorced Man Flip In" LOL! My DH had been divorced 2 years when we started dating. He told me he loved me after a month of dating. He took me with him to look at homes to buy because he said he wanted me to be comfortable there, too. He told me I had changed his mind about ever getting married again. I was a lot more reluctant because my divorce had been more recent, but after all of this I felt safe to commit again. WRONG! 6 months later, it was my birthday and I was asking him "What happened". LOL! He started pushing me away as soon as I started getting comfortable with him. I started sliding down on the priority list until I could no longer even talk to him on the phone during the work week. We never had even a single moment alone. He started criticising everything about me. Don't ask me why I stayed for 4 more years, but I did. I started backing away to where I wouldn't even see him on the weekends anymore, then I broke up with him. That was the best thing I could've ever done because it snapped him out of his perfection mode. He had to do some self-analyzing and came up with that he may had some blame for his previous divorce and our relationship going bust. We are now married! After 7 years of dating. LOL!

IF, there is a chapter two!

lol, he kept telling me his wife died 4 years ago in '66. He said that at least 3 times, before I asked, if she died in '66.

Then he corrected himself, but had to think FIRST and say it as '06.

So we'll see!

Just for grins, Google his name and see what pops out of the woodwork. A possible error in judgement could be made if he has a popular name. You may uncover several different persons with the same name and none of those be him.

Did he give you enough information that you could find a telephone number listed for him? That's one way to check to see if the location he said he lives at checks with the address of the phone number.

If you should find him by using Google, you may find comments posted by him at a number of sites. These comments will give you a better idea about him. For example, my adult son has rejected religion, but did not make a concrete statement about what his beliefs were. I found comments he had posted on the internet that shows he is an avowed atheist and he has posted some strong arguments why he feels that way, statements that he would not express to his parents. Employers use this technique when screening a potential hiree.

A dear friend of mine met a fellow recently. They are both retired, and this is her first romance since her husband died 6 years ago.
She and her new man spoke a bit on the phone several, several months ago, and she wasn't interested in him. She decided to give him another chance, and once they talked some more and met, they've been inseparable on weekends, ever since.

My mom met someone 4yrs. after my dad died. He was from a nearby town and was a truck driver, she was 70 and he was 72. They dated for a few months, and one day she mentioned that "Joe" had "stayed over". I was surprised at her. She said to me, "Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later!". I just never thought of my Mom in that way. ha.

They got married soon after and that was 11yrs. ago. Both needed each other and are still very happy.
