Place was unusually busy, for a Sunday, and seating was limited.

So of course I politely said YES!

He's 73, a widower

I'm 71, and single

He's still a practicing backruptcy attorney

The father of my son is a retired attorney

He likes to dance

I enjoy dancing

He and I root for the same college football team

He's never been on a cruise and WANTS TO

I'm a cruiser

etc etc etc

Walked me to my car and asked if he could call me sometime.

I said "of course"

The rest is WAIT AND SEE

He could pass as Walter Mathau's twin

Lars it seems there is no one chart which describes the temperatures accurately here as there is such a difference from one end of the island to another. The south is much warmer and Santa Cruz - the capital city about a half hour drive from here on the east coast - has another temperature range again. Here's the official temps for Santa Cruz from the Spanish Office of the Environment: Coldest month Dec....mean temperature is 66.2 F. (19C) Warmest month Aug.....mean temp is 77F. (25C) Yearly mean temp is 70.16 F. (21.2C) That's taken from a study 1971 to 2000. Another range of temperatures comes from the north airport - Los Rodeos, and still another from the top of the volcano area. Sufficient to say that it's shirtsleeve weather during the day most of the year - except when it rains, or if you're hiking up on top of the mountain when there's snow LOL. One of my ex-work colleagues in Ibiza lived for years in Costa Rica and her sons now live permanently in San Jose. She told many stories of her interesting life there. One of my cousin's sons has also settled somewhere in Costa Rica. I hear many Canadians have retired there because of the beautiful climate and peaceful life. Lars if you like hiking then this is hikers' paradise. Our German friends love coming here and spending many days climbing all around the ravines and the volcanic area. There are many hiking groups here which organize and transport folks with buses to the main starting points for hikes from the easiest to those reserved for experienced alpine climbers. It is a common daily sight to see people walking around wearing German hiking shoes, shorts, walking poles and knapsacks. They will have just come off a bus after having been somewhere up in the mountains. The large older crater area at the base of the volcano is called "Las CaÃ±adas" and it has an amazing lunar-like landscape, part of which was used in filming the original Planet of the Apes. You can see plenty of images of that on this Google image link. Teide is the name of the volcano. There was a cable car which ran nearly to the top which may still be in operation. My brother once took it and walked right up to the existing crater where it was hot, and the air was thin. Another beautiful hike is to the mountain hamlet of Masca. (Click to enlarge the photo at top left corner.) There the roads are so steep that I am nervous even driving in a car. There's a very steep hike from there down to the sea, where a small boat will pick up the hikers, but it's really for only the most experienced mountain climbers. Needless to say I haven't done that myself but I love to see the photos LOL. Ilisa I think everyone is feeling the cold right now even in Europe. Ok, I've answered some of these points above already but once again to clarify: 1. There wasn't enough room at the table, so we did fix a plate but it wasn't just a matter of taking our seats. There were no seats to take. Going to the kitchen was a last resort - I didn't know what else to do. 2. The hostess had not yet eaten by the time we arrived. So she couldn't remain sitting at the table and eat without getting up. She wasn't already sitting at the table. She was standing, fixing herself a plate. 3. I didn't realize how late we were till we got there - there was no set starting time and she lives an hour away, we sat in the Friday-Afternoon-Heading-Out-Of-Town traffic which I don't know if you can imagine unless you live in a place like Houston where it's unpredictable at best and can be horrific. 4. My children, ages 17 and 20 WERE includded - it's a holiday. (for those who aren't Jewish, maybe that's not meaning anything to you, but would you go to a friend's house for say, Easter Lunch, and leave your kids at home, no matter what age? This would be comparable to that. In any case the invitation which was sent via email said, You and your family. There's NO question, the kids were included. 5. She made no attempt to sit near us. She put her plate down as if she meant to sit near us but came back before ever sitting anywhere, picked up her plate, and went to the other table. I don't mind if she sat with us or not, it's just the way she acted as if she was going to, then apparently changed her mind. Even THAT wouldn't have mattered had it been a table with others in addition to just our family. It was just weird, the four of us, sitting alone in the kitchen, no other guests sitting or eating with us, the rest of the entire party in another room, and no attempt to integrate us into the party. Yeah, we're guilty of being late. But as hostess, it's her duty to make us comfortable and welcome, late or not. That's what I think you'd learn in an etiquette class. 6. And again - we were about 20 minutes late. Is that really late enough to turn around after being in the car one hour and not show up at all? If someone were 20 minutes late to my house and let that convince them to blow off my party, I'd be horrified. 7. I HAVE gotten over this, WAY over this. I wasn't going to answer lizzynola's post for that reason and because most of her questions/comments had already been covered in my previous posts. But since the discussion continues, I'm answering. I am glad I was able to vent here. I'm no longer mad or hurt. I'm still good friends with her. She had no ill intentions. I thank you all for your comments. May

I had the "Divorced Man Flip In" LOL! My DH had been divorced 2 years when we started dating. He told me he loved me after a month of dating. He took me with him to look at homes to buy because he said he wanted me to be comfortable there, too. He told me I had changed his mind about ever getting married again. I was a lot more reluctant because my divorce had been more recent, but after all of this I felt safe to commit again. WRONG! 6 months later, it was my birthday and I was asking him "What happened". LOL! He started pushing me away as soon as I started getting comfortable with him. I started sliding down on the priority list until I could no longer even talk to him on the phone during the work week. We never had even a single moment alone. He started criticising everything about me. Don't ask me why I stayed for 4 more years, but I did. I started backing away to where I wouldn't even see him on the weekends anymore, then I broke up with him. That was the best thing I could've ever done because it snapped him out of his perfection mode. He had to do some self-analyzing and came up with that he may had some blame for his previous divorce and our relationship going bust. We are now married! After 7 years of dating. LOL!

Errrr Patti dear.....loser is spelled with one "O"! So see your looser not a loser, its not as bad as you think! Just trying to make you feel better, no thanks necessary! Bwaaahahaha These are all very funny! Patti can take comfort knowing she's not alone! Oh wait a minute, I might fit in here too! I was shopping at a local store, they have a phone on a pole in two different locations in the store...I guess for employees if they get a call?? Anyway, I was walking down the aisle in the store, these two gals are unloading frieght and stocking a shelf. I am walking past the phone and it starts ringing. The phone is like 6 ft from where they were working, they kept working!!!!! I thought geeze can't one of you guys answer the damn phone? Its ringing off the hook, THEN I realized I'd turned my cell phone on when I left the house and it was in my purse ringing!!!!! OMG was my face red! I always got a hard time from the girls because we never had the phone on when we left the house, they'd try and call us and couldn't get us. LOL So I turned it on and see what happens?? LOL

IF, there is a chapter two!

lol, he kept telling me his wife died 4 years ago in '66. He said that at least 3 times, before I asked, if she died in '66.

Then he corrected himself, but had to think FIRST and say it as '06.

So we'll see!

Just for grins, Google his name and see what pops out of the woodwork. A possible error in judgement could be made if he has a popular name. You may uncover several different persons with the same name and none of those be him.

Did he give you enough information that you could find a telephone number listed for him? That's one way to check to see if the location he said he lives at checks with the address of the phone number.

If you should find him by using Google, you may find comments posted by him at a number of sites. These comments will give you a better idea about him. For example, my adult son has rejected religion, but did not make a concrete statement about what his beliefs were. I found comments he had posted on the internet that shows he is an avowed atheist and he has posted some strong arguments why he feels that way, statements that he would not express to his parents. Employers use this technique when screening a potential hiree.

Good for you Glenda. I guess you do have to be careful... but don't be too careful :-) He sounds like a nice man. You could end up with a new friend, or more. And in the meantime, it sounds like you really had a fun day! Your post made me smile :-)

A dear friend of mine met a fellow recently. They are both retired, and this is her first romance since her husband died 6 years ago.
She and her new man spoke a bit on the phone several, several months ago, and she wasn't interested in him. She decided to give him another chance, and once they talked some more and met, they've been inseparable on weekends, ever since.

So good luck, and I hope he calls!

My mom met someone 4yrs. after my dad died. He was from a nearby town and was a truck driver, she was 70 and he was 72. They dated for a few months, and one day she mentioned that "Joe" had "stayed over". I was surprised at her. She said to me, "Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later!". I just never thought of my Mom in that way. ha.

They got married soon after and that was 11yrs. ago. Both needed each other and are still very happy.
