Have you told your friends at the KT ?

That's what Jammer ask me this morning. And I told him "no, but I would." As I can really use your prayers and good thoughts for awhile.

I have a malignant tumor and have been driving back and forth to the city for tests & dr visits lately. My oncologist thinks that I will probably have radiation and low dose chemo for 6 weeks to shrink the tumor and then have surgery. But I have to get all the tests done first.

I'm very happy with my doctors and their staff. And I really don't think I will mind the drive to San Antonio (2 hour round trip) every weekday for 6 weeks. I may think differently about that after the first week. LOL

Those of you who know me well will know that I'm not a worrier and can honestly say I haven't wasted one minute worrying about this. I'm lucky to be surrounded by wonderful family, friends and co-workers. And I feel fine.

I will keep you all updated. And thanks for any prayers and good thoughts for me.

I'm wondering if he just used a very unfortunate choice of words to express the idea that it takes him time to do an estimate and that's a loss if you're a casual inquirer. Is the same as the "qualifying" process idea, but any craftsman, designer or similar person just has to have some kind of sequence of involvement that they can rely on that saves them time but still attracts new customers. I don't know how this works, of course, since the problem is, with many such efforts, you can't come up with an accurate estimate unless you know most of what you're being asked to do, so if it takes you 30 min, even, to figure that out, and you do that several times daily, and the return is low, you're broke. If someone is well-established in a fairly high end business, he might well charge a fee just to talk and see your wish list and give an estimate, and then that cost will be applied if you buy. For cabinetry, I would wonder if the person could have any kind of brochure or book of work with some example prices, even if price range was kinda broad and there were multiple disclaimers about "prices subject to change". I mean, you might be trying to figure out whether a custom built-in hutch costs $3k or $30 k, or whatever. My point is just that, it would be more straightforward to be told it'll cost me to sit down with the guy and get an estimate, since that is just the business of how he values his time, and that would not be offensive, as I can then make my decision about whether I value it the same amount, and includes the sensible idea that people agree on fees before doing any level of business, compared to the "if you have to ask" approach.

Greetings again, phoggie/Mary. In my earlier post I appeared to be unaware of some info that you appeared to have posted a couple of hours earlier, so much of what I said was not useful. If you want to take a good portion of the things from your current home to furnish the one where you will live in future, I have a suggestion that might be relevant. Son's sister/my daughter moved from near Toronto, on the north side of Lake Ontario, to Phoenix a few years ago, and son and I were discussing yesterday the cost of moving her goods: I'd thought that it was something over a dollar a pound, and he said he thought closer to a dollar and a half ... ... so I suggested that we should have bought her an old school bus, then we could have packed it for her, she could have driven it down there, and sold it after getting her things moved into her new place. Or, if the rules governing licensing required really different criteria, buying one there and driving it up, loading it and driving it back. Perhaps you might be interested in buying an old school bus, packing your goods into it and driving it to Burlington. Then check with (former)/friends to try to find some farm or rural person nearby who'd rent you some space at nominal fee to park it for a time, until you have found a place to live on a permanent basis. When one considers the monthly/quarterly cost of renting a storage space (or annual - and which period does one choose, up-front?), using the school bus idea might not be such a bad idea. There'd be an additional benefit of handling all of the stuff twice instead of four times: saved effort (says a guy with a streak of laziness) and less possibility of damage/breakage. I'd thought of suggesting that, should the contract for sale of your current house fall through, that it might be a good idea to do some checking as to whether that arrangement had been satisfactory. But when I heard that your former husband's son was in a related business, I was fairly sure that he'd have been aware enough of the local housing market to have ensured that you weren't being taken. With regard to the lady who has the house that she's talking of sharing ... how about finding a reason, whether real or imagined/manufactured, to visit there for a few days, or, probably better, a week or so, so that you could stay at her place and get an idea of her lfestyle, including an idea, even if vague, of the financial end, and whether you might feel comfortable with it. ole joyfuelled ... who doesn't have to buy gas for a school bus P.s. I've been saying for some time that it makes sense for several singles, especially senior ones, to live together. Advantages: -intellectual stimulation helps keep Alzheimer's at bay, -shared chores would enable one to continue to live independently longer, -each person would eat better than tea and toast for some meals if living alone, -increased safety: if someone has immediate trauma, as long as one can call, there's someone there to help, plus -they could triage: decide whether we can handle this situation in-house; or we call this person's caregiver to handle the situation; or call 9-1-1- ... right now!, -there's be a major cost saving over buying a smaller home/condo, renting one's own apt., etc. ... and a major one over entering a residential home and certainly over a nursing home. That cost saving would enable them to afford to have someone come in to take care of much of the cleaning and housekeeping. o j ... who lives alone

I read all the responses to you, lindalou, and thank you for saying what is in my heart. I don't know how I got here but I was thrilled to find everyone. It is amazing how connected I get to the these folks and their stories and think about them when I am going about my day. I learn from the sage advice here and others struggles and recently changed my approach to a situation I was in because it was the best way to handle it. Needed you. Need you. I also laugh a little more and longer. I am among the ones who read the KT first. I also want to win jasdip's trivia contest sooo badly but I have strong competition who, like me, are almost always wrong. If there ever is a question that asks what do 1 in 3 people at a certain kitchen table do every day I think we would all get the answer right. I do wish the best for everyone here in the future. Mary Ann, if anyone can pull this off, you can. You do have the right attitude to face what's ahead. Keep it up!

I dread the drive for you. I was so lucky to have my chemo and radiation doctors just minutes from my home.

MaryAnn I am so sorry to hear that you have to go through this.
Your attitude is wonderful and that is more than half the battle.
The treatments will all be over before you know it.

I went through it 18 years ago, and I'm fine. My mom went through it 7 years ago, and she's fine.

I am sorry to hear that you are having to go through this. That is a whole lot to think about. I pray that all goes well for you.

I was going to suggest Christmas music but you mentioned that. LOL! I like to turn my radio up really loud too! If you hear Frosty The Snowman blaring from some ones car this next month, it might just be me. :)

Add my hugs & best wishes to the list. I don't envy your drive every day but I would do the same. There are some excellent Doctors and medical facilities in SA. That's where I go for anything medical. Thank goodness it's only about an hour away for me and I don't have to go every day (yet). I echo the sentiment regarding attitude. Maintaining an upbeat attitude and healthy lifestyle helps the body heal and recover. Make sure you get all the proper nutrients to help keep you healthy. And, remember, this too shall pass.

I went through the radiation to shrink a breast tumor, and was supposed to have surgery afterwards, but the radiation took care of it. Good luck, and I'll keep you in my prayers.

During a recent discussion on the causes of a someone's enjoying good health, someone suggested that good genes help a lot.

Someone else said that a positive attitude, feeling at home in this precious world that God has given us was very important.

And someone else said that taking care of one's body, mind and spirit were very important components, as well.

It appears that you've done well on most of those counts, so far. Keep up the good work.

Sending those hugs and prayers. My DH is on Chemo every other month now to keep his under remission. His is in the lympth glands and seem to be shrinking. He too has a positive attitude, and the dr says that really helps.

Minnie, I did get your card and loved it! For several years I have planned on making some like it, but I think I need to buy several boxes after Christmas so that I can use some to cup up.

Mary Ann, I am a 15 yr. cancer survivor. I know only to well what you will be going through. I had chemo and radiation for three months. I only had a 45 minute commute each day and drove myself. Like several others have said keep a positive attitude that is half of the battle. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers and do keep us posted.

My friend across the street is now going through a second bought of cancer - it's hard but just keep thinking we are all here pulling for you and wishing you a speedy recovery! My thoughts, too, are with you. I'm not sure how I would feel about that drive...I'm thinking with some good music on the radio or some good CD's it wouldn't be so bad. You might think about going to the library and getting some books on CD to listen to while you are on the road.
