Houzz Tour: Design Ideas From an Elegant, Kid-Friendly Home
Recently I had the pleasure of virtually touring a beautiful home in Las Vegas, Nevada, designed by Amanda Burdge of AB Home Interiors. The owner wanted a home where his children and family could gather from all over the country and have a relaxing time together. It was important that the interior design be low-maintenance and as kid- and pet-friendly as possible. Here's what she did:
This beautiful dining room is hiding a secret: The top of the table lifts off to reveal a poker table underneath!
The credenza is a fascinating piece. It was completely handmade from abaca bamboo by a Cuban craftsman. Amanda used two chandeliers above the table to add a little extra panache to this space. The durable chair fabric is finished with pewter nail-head trim.
The paint used in the living room and here in the dining room is Sherwin Williams Artichoke-6179.

The heart of the home is this large, open area comprised of the family room, kitchen, and breakfast room. Amanda used commercial grade fabrics throughout the home. All of the flooring is 24-inch tile, except in the bedrooms, which are carpeted. The chairs in the family room are upholstered in a high-grade leather while the bar stools are covered with a woven vinyl that looks and feels like leather. They easily hold up to spills and wet bathing suits.
The master bedroom makes a beautiful statement with a grand 4-poster bed and custom bedding. The ottoman provides a place to unpack a suitcase or to sit for putting on shoes.
All the windows throughout the home are covered with woven shades and lined with black light-blocking fabric. The desk is handmade from leather. It provides a quite spot for the owner of the home to work or enjoy his early morning coffee and paper.

Can you just imagine relaxing in this luxurious tub and gazing out at the mountains in the distance? The surface around the tub is granite; the sides are covered in slate tile.
The shower is surrounded in the same beautiful slate seen around the spa tub.
This bedroom was designed with the daughter of the owner in mind, so Amanda gave it a more feminine feel. Note the gorgeous iron headboard found at a yard sale. The bedding and accessories are from Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel. "You can get a great look and it doesn't have to be super expensive," she says.
This guest bath is designed with a marble top counter and a beautiful lamp with an alabaster shade. Amanda didn't miss a single detail when creating this lovely bath for the owner's daughter. She even included bars of soap embellished with the daughter's monogram.
For the children's bedrooms, Amanda brought out the color! She used wall art with fun colors and bedding that was washable and kid-friendly.
The bedrooms are all carpeted. In this photo you can just make out the grid pattern of the carpet.

This bedroom also includes an ottoman for convenience and additional seating.
All of the bedrooms were furnished with their own television so each family member could feel relaxed and at home while visiting.

This bedroom was designed for the owner's son. Amanda chose a leather headboard for a more masculine feel. Beautiful custom shades and pillows complete the room.
The ottomans are storage ottomans, offering additional seating and space for guests.

Outdoor rooms are very much a part of the good life in the warm climate of Las Vegas. The coffee table is made from a durable resin that has the look of marble.
A swimming pool is another common feature here. The soothing, trickling sounds from the infinity pool make dining poolside very relaxing. The home was built on a hill to take advantage of the breathtaking mountain and lake views.
At the close of our tour, I asked Amanda how she became interested in interior design. She shared that prior to going into the design field, she had been planning on a career in medicine. But once she worked for a family friend who was an interior designer, she told me, "I was hooked." After working with a big design firm in Sacramento and Las Vegas, Amanda opened her own firm, AB Home Interiors in Brentwood, TN.

The sofa is upholstered in a soft, cotton chenille fabric, and the ottoman is covered with durable polyester fabric that will hold up well to shoes.
