A sweet little buck (3 pics)

This deer was grazing outside my kitchen door. I photographed him through two layers of glass, so the quality could be better. But isn't he handsome? I hope he survives deer season, which begins Monday.

I don't think he's legal to shoot with the antler restrictions in place right now. I think there has to be at least 3 points on one side.

You need a soil test to be certain what's going on with the ground itself. No amount of guessing will help. Tell them what you're trying to grow and they can offer corrections tailor made for specific crops, usually. Generally, you need softer soil so the tubers will be able to expand. Incorporate all the organic matter you can find. Compost is supreme, but chipped leaves are great, manures are good, and if you absolutely have to, try peat moss. Someone suggested sand to me, but I believe that red clay plus sand = concrete and I don't want it to be worse than it is already. I plant about 300 slips per year. I do the same thing every year. I get varying results and still don't know why. Last year, I had a decent crop, but not any huge tubers like in the past. So this March, I hauled in fresh horse manure and dumped it and tilled it in. When I was ready to plant in May when the slips arrived, that had mostly rotted. I use a turn plow to make hilled rows. It digs deep. I go both ways to make one row so it's uniform on both sides. Works for me. Then I'll go back and hand plant 18 to 24 inches apart and firm the soil around them on top of the ridge. I make a depression around them to help catch water. Otherwise, it runs off, not in. Red clay forms a crust in a heart beat. I'll water a few times as is, then I'll go back and poke holes in the hill 6 or 8 inches deep and water again into the holes so water gets into the hill. Usually I have to water 4 to 6 times, once every other day, before it rains enough and the plants look like they will survive on their own. I may go 3 days between if it's overcast and not so hot. Watering is done by hand. I'm not near a spigot. Used to be 2 gallon cans filled from a rubbermaid container and spritz each plant. Now I have a 300 gallon tank on a trailer and a hose. I still walk the rows, but I can give each plant more water at a time without fear of running out so soon. 300 plants means about 500 row feet. last year, I dumped a quart of fish emulsion, a bottle of NOG, and a small bottle of chelated iron (needed magnesium or manganese, I forget) and just for good measure, a handful of 20 mule team borax for boron. They need boron. I added 200 gallons of water. Nice fragrant cocktail. I watered both the sweets and the tomatoes and pepper transplants with it. I had the best pepper production I've ever had. Sweets, not so much. This year, I added fresh manure in March and watered again with the cocktail. I dug sample sweets early last week that were the size of gallon milk jugs. Literally. I'm waiting to dig the rest another week or two. I usually dig them right at the September/October change. I've had rabbit issues this year from what I can tell looking at the patch. But the vines are thick and heavy, the leaves are huge. I'm looking forward to the big dig in another week or two. Next year, I should be using rain water. That's the plan anyway. See if this works. Heat & humidity...it's July! I am going to be on the lookout for some "prettier" sweetcorn fork thing-ies! (have those yellow plastic ones now)...I used to have wood handled ones...maybe they went with your corn plates! LOL! luckygal...good to hear from you...knowing that gardens take up the summertime .. & camping, traveling, thrift-shopping, etc. etc. LOL! Flowerlady, please ignore the above post. I've found your new threads with all the pretty pictures. Do you still plan that 20 foot long room? And do you still use the SweetHome3d software? I just did a thread beginning my house plan with it. I've been reading the HELP file almost this entire day, and I am EXHAUSTED. But my results are posted in that thread. I guess she could be a Manx.......the shelter told my daughter the tail was damaged, but you never know. A line of barn cats on my road must have the Manx gene, as many have tails measuring about 4". I thought Manx cats had less of a tail than that, but I'm not familiar with the breed. Little Girl and Amigo are quite devoted to my granddaughter, and have been helping her recover from her injuries. Purr, purr.....

Oh, he is lovely. I don't understand how anyone can got out there and shoot a helpless animal. And as far as deer overpopulation goes, if it wasn't for most of the predators being killed along with human overpopulation, deer overpopulation wouldn't even be an issue.

Just to clarify, what I wrote was re. people who hunt just because they enjoy killing, such as trophy hunters.

The deer population around us is greatly diminished, but Eliot alerted us with his 'deer yodel' last week. There were three yearlings in the conservancy behind the house -- that I could see. El insisted there were more along the creek, behind the row of arbor vitae. They have a path there -- a portion of their N-S route from Southern Illinois up through Wisconsin. They are safe from hunters in town; I suppose they *know* that! Some autumns we've had does 'hiding out' from the bucks close to our yard during rutting season.

Petaloid, I grew up in the city. And yes, it's fun to live with the deer. (But not with deer ticks....)

We have lots of deer in my area. I feed them lots of goodies but thank God for hunting season as they are just way to plentiful. We have some game ranches around where people pay to come and hunt and I truly hate that but many many of our hunters do hunt to put venison on the table. They do us a big service in this community and hunting and killing a deer is way better than having an over population starving....and it does happen. They are very brazen in this area.

Yes, he is adorable and I myself could never shoot him. I love most animals and nature. It's hunting season around here, and thank goodness I haven't seen the usual amount of dead deer in trailers. But I'm married to a hunter, and know many hunters, and all of them use the deer as venison. I have hit several deer with my car, thankfully never caused myself any harm.

He's certainly a cutie and I could never shoot him but I can't shoot anything really. I don't mind hunters though and see no harm in the sport of hunting. I hate the ones who do it illegally.

He is a handsome fellow. We live in the middle of a small town and the place behind our APT BLDG is a large lot. The house sits on the front of the lot and the back part, maybe a 1/2 acre is wooded and a lot of undergrowth. Every hunting season we se a couple deer back there. After hunting is over, they go back to where they came from. Smart deer, Huh? As for hunting, although I understand the need for it, (over population and people needing food) I just don't want to see it and I hate to see trucks with the mutilated body of what was a beautiful animal strapped on it. I also find it awful that there are the "trophy hunters" who will kill only the biggest most beautiful animal, just to hang it's head on a wall. Or even worst, the ones who just love to kill something, and leave it to rot in the woods. Thankfully, the majority of the hunters seem to be decent conscientious people. I'm just glad none of the men in our family hunt.

Dotmom, you expressed my feelings about hunting. Some of my neighbors hunt for the food, and hunt conscientiously. Ditto my cousin Dave. Then there are the the guys at the general store I've heard talking about "sound shots," where they shoot in the direction of a noise. Ugh. The worst was my former neighbor, who used to make trips out west somewhere to shoot caged animals so he could mount their heads on his walls.

I do worry about safety, especially on the first day of deer season. In order to get anywhere, I have to drive through woods, and I always envision bullets flying back and forth. Our collie-shepherd, Caroline, had her foot shot off on our property during deer season. It's not my favorite time of year.

One of our neighbors hunts -- with a crossbow. I'm more OK with that because there's considerable skill and endurance involved. Nobody around here NEEDS to hunt for food.
