Another sweet kitty success story (1 pic)

Several years ago my daughter and granddaughter were living in an apartment by themselves with one cat, a white/grey tabby named Amigo. They had no plans to acquire another (although my granddaughter was always promoting the idea).

One day they took a trip to NYC. Stopping at a luncheonette for a snack, they struck up a conversation with a woman who worked at a nearby animal shelter. She told them about a sweet, timid female cat who had obviously been through some very tough times. Part of her tail was missing. No one had adopted the cat, and she was due to be euthanized the next day.

You can guess the rest......my daughter and granddaughter went to the shelter and brought the cat home. For weeks, it seemed, they tried to come up with a good name for her. But in the end, they called her Little Girl. She was very shy at first, and still makes herself scarce if there are strangers in the house. But she loves her family--and Amigo! She's a joy to pet.....the softest fur imaginable. I love her markings.

She looks like Grady, one of the (now grown) kittens of the feral we have here, Susan. And Miss Spits.....his sibling!

I love the gray tabs, they are so pretty!

Bless them for saving that little life and giving her a good home!

there are about 3 or 4 of this new batch of feral kitties that come to eat at my back porch that look just like that the same markings. Sooo cute, but very very wild.

Reptibark is WAY too expensive for my tastes as well. You'd be better off looking for pine bark mulch, rather then "fines". The labeling on what is useful for the mixes can vary. In fact, last summer, I went to a landscape outfit that sold pine bark mulch in bulk, with the intent of simply getting mulch for my garden. I filled two 55g barrels, and being a "fill your own" deal, I scooped from the bottom, where the smaller particles were. I was pleasantly surprised to find that with some sifting, I could have easily gotten quite a lot of "fines" that would be suitable for gritty mix or 5-1-1. I payed $12 for the 2 barrels full, and could have probably gotten the equivalent of 3 or 4 two cubic foot bags of fines. You might want to see if you can find a landscape supplier or sawmill that has pine bark mulch. As for the perlite, if you lived closer, I'd give you a huge bag for free. I bought a rather large bag, for around $15, figuring I was going to use lots of 5-1-1 mix, but now I realize I have too much. Personally, I'm not all THAT wild about the 5-1-1 mix, because if you let it go just a bit too dry, it's VERY difficult to water, due to repulsion. I'll tell ya though, for outdoor stuff, 5-1-1 is a good choice, but for your indoor plants, just skip the 5-1-1 and go gritty. You may try the barkless mix, but be cautious of fertilizing, and Foliage Pro 9-3-6 is a must. I got mine from Amazon for $23 for a quart, which looks like it'll last me a few years. I'm no pro, and am only a year into this gritty mix thing, but I'll assist you in every way I can if you choose to go barkless. I made the choice to do it not knowing how things would turn out, but so far, so good. I'll probably never use the bark again, and stick with my turface/grit combo. Another advantage is that when you lose the bark, your mix will literally last forever. Nothing in it breaks down, so you can just repot with the same mix over and over. Basically, you buy a couple bags of turface and grit, and you're good for eternity! Joe P.S. Kim: Stop, look, burrow, stop, look, duck under benches, stop, look, move things around. That's how you find the great deals. I just scored a relatively unusual tree peony (had to go to the forum for ID) for 1/2 price by moving all the herbaceous peonies away, going in about five pots deep, and glimpsing different foliage. Snagged stockings notwithstanding, it made my day. To know if a plant has a chance of taking, look at the roots. No nursery, not even HD or Lowes, will care if you pop the plant out of the pot. The roots should be a creamy or white color, shouldn't be more root bound that once or twice around the pot (trim before planting) and should NOT have ANY critters in the soil. Hostas, Dicentra, etc. that are beginning to look funky now still have good roots in those pots! The nurseries know that without good looking tops they won't sell for full price but We Know Better. LOL Think of what the plants in your garden look like -- potted plants may be a few weeks ahead so Check the Roots. Look everywhere and every day. Just a five minute stop at the supermarket may elicit a gem on the markdown table. An in and out at Ocean State Job Lot this morning found all roses marked down to seventy-five cents. How can one go wrong? And, for $1, if you plant three in November and only one lives, you've still gotten yourself a good Yankee bargain :-) Martie

I chose to go gluten free, not because of Celiac, but because of thyroid issues. I have found a complete change in my body since then, and if I do eat something containing wheat, I definitely feel it shirtly afterward. I am Italian. Pasta and bread are an integral part of my life, but I have given up bread and switched to brown rice pasta. I dont really miss bread anymore, as Ive learned to substitute other things. I eat much more quinoa, and organic polenta. Also more rice (brown or forbidden). When I crave sweets I usually eat some fruit, but I will give in on occasion and have sime fat free whipped topping or some greek yogurt with honey. Im trying to adopt a cultural diet-eating more Thai, Indian and Mexican...lots of veggies and spices. Ive found if my mouth is hot from some curry or siracha, i am not so hungry later! Beans! Theyre your friend. A bit of baby mozarella with EVOO and kalmata olives makes a delish lunch. Add frsh romatoes & basil if you chose. Absolutely no deprivation! In my WW meeting last night the topis was portion size, and folks were discussing Hambuger Helper!!! Really? Id eaten rice, beans, veggies & salsa for dinner-could eat twice the portion size for half the calories! Its all about the food (fuel) you put in your body.

Thanks to you all, our boys do rule the roost! What Nita isn't telling you is that we have a colony on the patio as well. A few years ago a stray showed up, a gray tabby who has had a hard life. Someone was very mean to her, she fears hands, hoses and anything attached to a stick. We've been working on her and can only hope that we can capture her to have her spayed, so far she has avoided the live trap. She has had 3 litters, 3 of the now adults live on the porch (we had 2 neutered)one of which sometimes comes in, Baby Girl in the photo was born in April, and now 3 that were born in June (yep, she carried two litters). Baby is at the vet, we pick her up this afternoon, she was spayed. The boys are Maine Coons, Bob and Moose are 5 years old, biological brothers from Maine Coon Cattery outside Cleveland, Dude is 7 and hails from McKittycreek in Erie, PA. He was a great match for us because Sue also has exotic birds, but was an only child so he feels he is above all the other cats. I love Maine Coon cats...or any cat!! LOL!!!

Beautiful markings!

In my next life...I'm coming back as a filthy rich animal rescuer! There's rarely a cat that crosses my shadow that I wouldn't love to bring home to a healthy lifestyle and a lot of TLC. I'm an animal lover in general but have developed a huge affinity for cats in the last several years. They're so intelligent and lovable...and mysterious. ;-)

Thank goodness your daughter is an ole softy, Susan. She brought home a winner.

I'm "banned" from going in to the Humane Society. Last time I went in, I came home with Roxie who was a little kitten. She made 3 cats, in our family! LOL

Awww, love the story of Little Girl Amigo...sweet tabby and so is the family who gave her a second chance! :)

Jasdip, I ban myself from going to our SPCA or Humane Society. (That doesn't sound right.) However, it seems like there's always some little darlin' coming into my life and I don't even have to leave the house for them to find me. :)

Tell Little Girl that there's another one who was traumatized, still nervous around people (runs when the doorbell rings or there's a knock at the door) and yes, "tail-challenged" too, but she still finds ways to relax. And look on the bright side, the tail doesn't get in the way as often!

She looks like one of my kitties, too. I can't imagine having to euthanize adoptable animals. That is so sad. She may be Manx. They are born without tails, or with partial tails. Usually they have longer back legs than the typical cat and have more of a hopping gait. Some are born with tails, but carry the Manx gene. I'm glad she found a loving home.

My first cat had no tail. Her first owner's son had closed it in the door, and when she came to animal rescue, they had to amputate. I came to the shelter to get a little kitten, but when I saw Carmen, I had to take her.

She was a real lap cat, and would even let me use her as a pillow. Such a sweet girl.

I guess she could be a Manx.......the shelter told my daughter the tail was damaged, but you never know. A line of barn cats on my road must have the Manx gene, as many have tails measuring about 4". I thought Manx cats had less of a tail than that, but I'm not familiar with the breed.

Little Girl and Amigo are quite devoted to my granddaughter, and have been helping her recover from her injuries. Purr, purr.....

Little Girl reminds me of our Bud.
I've always figured his tail got caught in a door, it's permanently hooked. When my parents first got him (we inherited him, as he was MUCH too lively for them), he would run and hide everytime the garage door would open.
He looks cute walking with his tail in the air, and it hanging down at the tip.
