Has anyone ever had the Thanksgiving dinner from there?? (turkey, ham, sides...etc)

We're thinking of using them this year........easier for everyone.

TIA

I've only tasted their delicious ham and their champagne mustard (yummy!). But I will tell you that the ham is at its best if you do not heat it in the oven. It (as most spiral sliced hams do) loses moisture quickly and the flavor suffers as well. In my opinion, it is best at room temperature. I absolutely LOVE to put a couple of spoonfuls of the champagne mustard in a small bowl and just swipe little pieces of the ham through the mustard and pop them in my mouth.

    Delicious!

I buy the Honey Baked Ham with the bone in and it seems to have more flavor than the boneless. I fix the side dishes.

That sounds great, Tricia, just in time for the left over corned beef on a sandwich!

We bought the honey baked spiral cut ham from Honey Baked. I remember toting my first ham home on the plane from Atlanta. But when Wegmans built here, we tried it...and the quality is a tad bit more, but the price is much less. So, it's been the Wegmans ever since.

Most supermarkets have spiral cut ready to eat hams this time of the year....I happen to like Smithfield but there are others. Then put that ham, shank down cut side up ( I am trusting you won't be buying a whole ham) into a dish with sides and pour honey over it and onto the cut side.....even open up the spirals where it's cut and put some in there. Teh ham will absorb the honey....and repeat.....and perhaps a third time. Then place that ham in a roasting pan, cut side down! and heat at 325, covered or wrapped in floi until it's just heated through...for maybe a 6 pound ham that would be about an hour. Don't over bake or all the honey will leak out. Enjoy! Linda c

I have worked for the Honey baked ham co for more than 10 years. DO NOT, DO NOT cook it in any way. bring out about 30min to an hour before you want to serve and ENJOY. if this is your first taste of a honey baked ham...you are in for a treat and this won't be your last. you can freeze for thrity days without loss of texture /flavor. let me hear from you after you eat yours.

I've never tried their sides, but last year when I went to pick up a ham, there were quite a few people buying the whole meal. The sweet potato casserole looked yummy. Just remember that and the green bean casserole :-)

If you decide to do it, please let us know how the sides taste. I may do that for Christmas since it's just the two of us.

Delicious, been buying them for gee, over 30 years. Used stop on the way to Atlanta airport, and bring one home on the plane. Thankfully, they opened one up here long before I retired.
They are so sweet and tender.
Yes, do not cook, just warm up, While I buy the select slices for just the two of us, a bone-in one is more economical for more than 3 people.

Our all time fave ham is by a small company in Oklahoma City, they do ship out. My husbands company would contract with them each year to provide all employees one of their spiral honey hams each Christmas, I so miss them since we have moved and are no longer getting those hams. I have talked to them about shipping to us here and they do ship.

I have had the Honey Baked hams also but much preferred the Shafers.

I have had the Honey Baked Ham, but their sides and desserts are too expensive.

My local Restaurant caters Thanksgiving for 10 for $84.00.

To buy all the ingredients for Thanksgiving would be more expensive than that.

They're good if you like cloyingly sweet ham. Not for me. I can't eat ham like that. I want plain ham with HOT mustard.

I love their sandwiches. I've never had their meals but would think, based on their sandwiches that they'd be great. If you're looking for convenient we've also found local casino buffets to be a great get-together that satisfies everyone. Happy Thanksgiving.

We were given a $75 gift certificate a couple of years ago. It didn't quite cover the ham and two sides. Everything was really good, but my dh doesn't like sweet ham. HBH is sweet. The sides were delicious, but really fattening. I'd eat there again if I could talk dh into it.

The ham looks lovely, but it is just too sweet for me.

Shafer's Honey Glazed Hams are a product of a lunchmeat company. Alderfer's is their best known brand.

Love theie hams and cinnimon apples.

I love HB spiral hams. I make the traditional Turkey for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I always get a Spiral Ham for New Years. I keep it wrapped in its foil, in the fridge, until I'm ready to heat it. I'll throw mustard, canned pineapple and maraschino cherries around it while it heats up, makes a nice sweet-hot sauce to drizzle over the meat.

i would try and find opinions on the turkey. everyone has had the ham and if you like sweet it's wonderful. we've had a few sides and they were good too. 2006 DH & i were too busy to do anything for thanksgiving and we ordered from publix deli. we were VERY disappointed, turkey came in a plastic sealed wrapper, gravey was too salty (and dh loves salt) and stuffing was mushy :-( never again...we are for the first time going to do turkey day the weekend before then meet sis, BIL and twins in atlanta the day before thanksgiving day. we'll have a turkey spread at Ruth Chris' steakhouse, hope it's good! ~ liz

I like them fine and we buy them from time to time but I think for the taste and quality, you can buy other hams, cheaper and just as tasty. I'm not a cheaper is better when it comes to food but I'm not going to pay for something that isn't worth top dollar.

We've stopped buying HB hams. They are grossly overpriced for what they are. They can also be very dry. A supermarket ham (spiral cut or not) is just as good if not better.

may not be the same Shafer's this is a family owned small outfit based only in Oklahoma City. When I talk to them I talk directly to Mr or Mrs Shafer.

I know I'm in the minority, but the HoneyBaked Hams are just awful. Too sweet for our tastes, and hideously overpriced.

I can get a really good spiral-sliced ham at our local pretty good deli in the grocery store for about $20. A comparable weight HoneyBaked ham is $80 or more. Honey and sugar isn't worth that price, LOL.

I make my own glaze, and I never overheat the ham. The hot glaze over the room temp ham is marvelous.

I agree with the others that don't like it at all...
it is WAY too sweet for me.

Nope, not for me. Don't particularly like them but I guess I can eat it. Not everything needs sugar on it to be good. Ham should be smoky AFAIC. And vegetables don't need to be coated with sugar either. I'd rather save the sugar intake for dessert. I gag on those disgusting sugar glazed carrots ("copper pennies" some like to call them). Even things like BBQ sauce and ketchup are so laden with sugar these days I've started doing more of my own or do without. Even seasonings have to be filled up with sugar to get people to eat them! Ugh!

I have purchased the HBH, and like so many others, it's just too sweet. I prefer a bone-in ham that I can make ham and beans with later. It freezes nicely and tastes MUCH better, imho!

Looks like most people don't like HBH , find them too sweet. I once met a girl from France, an exchange student, who said they would NEVER put sugar on pork in France. I personally do enjoy HBH ham, I love the spiral cut. And When I heat it, I make a sweet-hot sauce with fruit and mustard.

ritamay..if you don't have the time, i say go for it...if i didn't have time to cook, and wanted to spend the day with family and friends, why not?

if you have a costco, they also have a spiral ham, and there are plenty of pre-made sides, except for gravy..i'd go without before buying canned. but it does put you in the position of prep time, sigh...

some short cuts... we bake potaotes instead of mashed (yam for me plain for dh) dress up bagged slaw with dressing, maderine oranges...purchased rolls...couple of family sized sacks of steamed veggies...the pies from costco/sams are to die for and huge...

    Thanks for all the opinions!!
We're having T-Day dinner at my mom and dad's.....they live in an assisted living place, we will have access to their private dining room. Problem is, we will only have microwaves for reheating. No stove. So, we're kind of limited.
My dad just got out of the hospital, so we don't want him to have to travel around. Figured this was easiest for my sister and I.
I want something nicer than a grocery store package. Like I said, I like the ham from HBH, but have never tried anything else from there, so I am still skeptical. My cousin just told me she didn't really care for the turkey. sigh..........

    Any more ideas??? LOL!!!

Ritamay, I say go with the ham if you parents like it. Since your dad is just out of the hospital, this isn't your normal year. Make it as easy as possible and enjoy the time with your parents. Maybe you could make a favorite pie or cake for dessert. How many people are coming? Have one bring rolls and butter, one a vegetable dish that can be nuked, etc. and buy the rest.

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!!

    Thanks Patti,

We usually do a full home made thanksgiving, but this year, it just seems like too much. I wish things could be the same, but they aren't. Like you said, the most important thing is getting together. There will only be 8 of us, so that's good! My dad will be 89 in December.

Doesn't matter what you have as long as you're with the one's you love.

rita first, does dad have any food restrictions? all the food prep, including meats, can be done ahead. you could do a version of home-made tv dinners with a quick warm-up in the microwave...

i'd be concerned with salt content in purchased sides (altho you can limit the ham servings)

    typical menu for ham dinner..

    fresh veggie (salad)
my family likes green bean cassarole
as mentioned baked potato (but gosh nothing like cheesy potato cassarole)
a fruit salad (check the fresh cut fruit bowls, to limit sugar)
    rolls (bring tub butter)
    dessert

    very simple...all can be transported...
