Could I make a mixed alcoholic drink a day ahead?

I plan to serve a "Gleaming Apple" cocktail to my family tomorrow; it's made from vodka, apple juice, fresh lemon juice, and maple syrup. You shake it with ice and strain into a martini glass. Can I put the ingredients in the shaker (except for the ice) and refrigerate it overnight? If it's tightly covered I'm thinking the alcohol won't evaporate. Any other possible disadvantages to doing this?

I wouldn't think so...i'd be more afraid of the effect of the acid(lemon juice) and maple syrup when left standing that long.

You can measure out the individual ingredients and add all together at the last minute. Like Monica, I don't worry about the alcohol, but the other ingredients.

No need to apologize, sands. I totally knew that you were referring to your own facetious comment, not mine. My reading skills are much more advanced than my cooking skills, I promise. :) But thank you for being concerned that you not hurt feelings unintentionally. The nature of the internet is such that it can really cause some awful misunderstandings... Linda, what you're saying certainly makes sense *in theory*. I guess what I'm saying, though, is that I haven't found it to make a significant difference *in practice*. For instance, is there ever liquid in the bottom of the bowl of leftover tuna/chicken salad? Yep. If there's a good bit, I drain it off; if just a little, I mix it in. Either way, I've never thought it tasted waterlogged or that the texture was compromised. Another example is our very favorite pasta salad. No seafood in that one. Just pasta, raw veggies (including most of the ones you listed above, like cucumbers and tomatoes and onions), seasonings and an Italian dressing-style marinade. The original recipe calls for it to be refrigerated for 24 hours before serving. I actually like to hold it for 48 hours, because that's when the flavor is at its' peak. In theory, it should be so mushy and watery by then that nobody would want it. In practice, it actually holds up well for another day or two before the texture of the vegetables finally starts to deteriorate. Maybe y'all are more sensitive to the watery thing than we are. Maybe every pasta salad is different in this respect. Whatever the case, I'm gonna stick to my method this time, guys. lol But I do want to add that it's a pleasure to have a (civil) debate with people who are so knowledgeable and experienced. Do you have a salad spinner? I always wash my cilantro & parsley when I get it home, spin it as dry as I can & store it in a ziploc bag with a few paper towels in the fridge. I find it stores best when dry - lasts for a week. Wrap your green onions in paper towels too as they are always soaking wet at the store from the water they keep spraying on the veggies. I wouldn't do anything ahead. I'd take my ingredients, a good knife & a small plastic cutting board with me. Take a bottle of olive oil (or a small well-sealed container), a fresh lemon or two and your salt & pepper with you). Pack the cilantro & onions in a small cooler. Cook the potatoes there in the beach house kitchen, and then all you need to do is mix up the dressing & chop the cilantro & spring onions - you can do that even in any cramped, ill-equipped kitchen. The dressing is so simple you can even get by not mixing it, but just sprinkling all the ingredients over the potatoes and just gently tossing. This is my kind of cooking! Have a great weekend...

I regularly caramelize onions in my crockpot. I slice enough onions to fill it, which is about 5 lbs or so. I get a bag from Costco and do the whole lot, sometimes in 2 batches. I add a stick of butter and turn it on. At the start the onions give off liquid so you get a soupy mix, but as the liquid is cooked off, you'll see the onions caramelize in their own sugars. I don't add anything, no sugar, no salt. I don't find it necessary but your taste may not be the same as mine. Once it's deeply caramelized (for me it takes most of a day), you can do whatever you like. We freeze in portions to be put on pizza, or eaten with tortillas, or added to soups, stews or sauces. Alisande- Thanks for the link.... :-) You will get more probiotic benefit from the number and types of good bacteria found in kefir than from any brand of yogurt, including Stonyfield Farm. While most commercial yogurt products have 2 strains of bacteria, Stonyfield Farm has 6 live lactic-acid bacteria to set it aside from the rest, if you want to compare commercial yogurt products. I consider Greek yogurt an over-priced fad with few actual health benefits. I can drain the whey from dairy kefir curd for a Greek-style kefir. I did the same thing with homemade yogurt long before it became popular. I first made kefir with the powdered starter until I could locate real kefir grains. Kefir grains are a living bacteria which renews itself, grows and makes more kefir grains; while yogurt bacteria dies after subsequent batches and has to be renewed with new cultures. You can get the "Heirloom Yogurt Starter Culture", which included viili, from Cultures For Health - http://www.culturesforhealth.com/heirloom-yogurt-starters.html I've also made "Set Milk" http://www.wildernessfamilynaturals.com/category/set-milk.php These cultures are from Germany. I always make my own quick and easy sour cream with cream and commercial buttermilk (which contains live active cultures). Homemade Sour Cream 2 c. heavy whipping cream 3 T. cultured buttermilk [You can easily make 1/2 a recipe if 2-cups is too much.] Place these ingredients in a sterilized jar; stir to blend. Cover the top with a coffee filter or white paper towel (secure with a rubber band to the jar). Let sit in your oven with the light on for 24-hours, until it has thickened. Put a lid on the jar and refrigerate for 24-hours before using. This sour cream won't separate, curdle and break when cooking with it. Here you go, Carol. I haven't tried it yet (got it at the liquor store), but it does sound good.

Gleaming Apple Cocktail

2 oz. vodka
1 oz. apple juice
1/4 oz (1.5 tsp.) fresh lemon juice
1/4 oz (1.5 tsp.) maple syrup

Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a thin apple slice

I made it and it was good....but I thought it could have used more apple juice.
I made another one without the vodka, more lemon juice and apple juice. Loved it!

My favorite, for what it is worth

Caramel Apple Cocktail

6 servings
1 tablespoon cinnamon sugar
1 lemon wedge
1 1/2 cups apple cider
6 tablespoons butterscotch schnapps
1 (750 ml) bottle sparkling wine, chilled
6 maraschino cherries

Spread cinnamon sugar onto a small plate or saucer. Run the lemon wedge along the rim of 6 champagne glasses, then dip the rims into the cinnamon sugar.
Combine apple cider and schnapps in a measuring cup.
Divide evenly among prepared glasses. Divide sparkling wine among glassses.
Garnish with cherry.

I make Cosmo's up ahead of time and they keep for months but I use Rose's lime juice not fresh lime juice. I would worry about the lemon juice, too.

I just keep them in the refrigerator... I don't make them up months ahead for entertaining, just a day or two, but what's left over does keep a long time because I've had them weeks or months later when I just felt like it. I generally don't drink unless I'm out or have company but every now and then it seems like a good idea. LOL I can testify that they taste just as good!

So we had this cocktail last night....... It was good, but a little strong. ("Lighter fluid," I believe my son-in-law said. LOL) I think I agree with Carol that more apple juice is needed. Either that or I should have shook the mixture with the ice a little longer. By the time we had downed half the glass we decided it was a delicious drink. One was definitely enough...... :-)
