Could I make a mixed alcoholic drink a day ahead?

I plan to serve a "Gleaming Apple" cocktail to my family tomorrow; it's made from vodka, apple juice, fresh lemon juice, and maple syrup. You shake it with ice and strain into a martini glass. Can I put the ingredients in the shaker (except for the ice) and refrigerate it overnight? If it's tightly covered I'm thinking the alcohol won't evaporate. Any other possible disadvantages to doing this?

I wouldn't think so...i'd be more afraid of the effect of the acid(lemon juice) and maple syrup when left standing that long.

You can measure out the individual ingredients and add all together at the last minute. Like Monica, I don't worry about the alcohol, but the other ingredients.

Do you have a salad spinner? I always wash my cilantro & parsley when I get it home, spin it as dry as I can & store it in a ziploc bag with a few paper towels in the fridge. I find it stores best when dry - lasts for a week. Wrap your green onions in paper towels too as they are always soaking wet at the store from the water they keep spraying on the veggies. I wouldn't do anything ahead. I'd take my ingredients, a good knife & a small plastic cutting board with me. Take a bottle of olive oil (or a small well-sealed container), a fresh lemon or two and your salt & pepper with you). Pack the cilantro & onions in a small cooler. Cook the potatoes there in the beach house kitchen, and then all you need to do is mix up the dressing & chop the cilantro & spring onions - you can do that even in any cramped, ill-equipped kitchen. The dressing is so simple you can even get by not mixing it, but just sprinkling all the ingredients over the potatoes and just gently tossing. This is my kind of cooking! Have a great weekend...

I was intrigued, since that seems to be the universal description, so I ran it down. The All-Clad site even says "porcelain" but doesn't explain. A customer review on Cooking.com says "heavy, non-metal insert". Here's a description from Metrokitchen.com: With the All-Clad Copper-Core porcelain double boiler insert, you can melt chocolate or gently reheat foods with confidence. This duo features a 2 quart sauce pan made of five layers of metal, including a core, copper layer to generate optimum heat distribution and conductivity. The 1.5 quart insert has a porcelain base to be placed over gently simmering water. You'll gain optimal temperature control of delicate ingredients without the threat of scorching or burning foods. This set comes with two lids to fit each piece individually. The All-Clad Copper-Core porcelain double boiler insert includes the following items:* Exterior pot is a 2 quart All-Clad Copper Core sauce pot* Insert is white porcelain with a capacity of 1.5 quarts* The porcelain comes with a stainless ring that fits around it. This ring has a handle to make the insert easier and safer to remove from the exterior pot* All-Clad stainless lid* Fully-clad All-Clad Copper Core cookware is made in the USA. Lids are currently being made in Asia. AHA! Progress! Then I found a much better picture on good old Houzz: Here's another view from Jlhufford.com It's a porcelain bowl grafted onto an All-Clad pot handle! It's actually a pretty cool design. It gets to be their signature stainless steel, but still a perfectly non-reactive interior. They have a larger one that they say is non-reactive because it's 18/10 stainless, and that's sort of true, but the porcelain is better. :) The picture at Chef's Arsenal that confounded you is probably of that bigger insert. OTOH, the shape isn't the most convenient looking. I haven't found a picture of the interior, but, for whisking, a true bowl shape works better, and, especially, a wider opening so you have room to work sideways, rather than up and down. Pyrex, Duralex, Arc and Anchor Hocking all make appropriate glass bowls. :) They're often sold as cheap open stock at grocery stores that have housewares sections, and they also come in nesting sets. Very useful things to have around. I have the Arc set, an extra from the "Arcoroc" days that was my mothers (most useful size and most used) and an extra set of the four smallest. You could check the market for a good bowl to use as a double boiler. :)

I regularly caramelize onions in my crockpot. I slice enough onions to fill it, which is about 5 lbs or so. I get a bag from Costco and do the whole lot, sometimes in 2 batches. I add a stick of butter and turn it on. At the start the onions give off liquid so you get a soupy mix, but as the liquid is cooked off, you'll see the onions caramelize in their own sugars. I don't add anything, no sugar, no salt. I don't find it necessary but your taste may not be the same as mine. Once it's deeply caramelized (for me it takes most of a day), you can do whatever you like. We freeze in portions to be put on pizza, or eaten with tortillas, or added to soups, stews or sauces. Here is one recipe to get you started! Elegant Artichoke Cups 24 square wonton wrappers 1 can (14 ounces) artichoke hearts in water, drained and coarsely chopped ½ cup diced red bell pepper 2 tablespoons finely snipped fresh parsley 1 lemon ½ cup (2 ounces) shredded mozzarella cheese 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1 garlic clove, pressed ½ cup (2 ounces) grated fresh Parmesan cheese, divided Preheat oven to 350* Press one wonton wrapper into each cup of mini-muffin pan. Lightly spray wontons with vegetable oil. Bake 6 minutes or until edges of wontons are light golden brown. Remove from oven to cooling rack; set aside, leaving wontons in pan. Meanwhile, coarsely chop artichokes; place in a mixing bowl. Dice bell pepper. Finely snip parsley. Zest lemon to measure ½ teaspoon zest.. Add bell pepper, parsley, lemon zest, mozzarella cheese, mayonnaise and garlic to bowl; mix well. Grate Parmesan cheese. Add half of the Parmesan cheese to artichoke mixture; mix well. Fill each wonton cup with one rounded scoop of artichoke mixture; sprinkle with remaining Parmesan cheese. Bake 8 minutes or until edges of wontons are golden brown and cheese is melted. Remove from pan; serve immediately. Yield: 24 appetizers

Here you go, Carol. I haven't tried it yet (got it at the liquor store), but it does sound good.

Gleaming Apple Cocktail

2 oz. vodka
1 oz. apple juice
1/4 oz (1.5 tsp.) fresh lemon juice
1/4 oz (1.5 tsp.) maple syrup

Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a thin apple slice

I made it and it was good....but I thought it could have used more apple juice.
I made another one without the vodka, more lemon juice and apple juice. Loved it!

My favorite, for what it is worth

Caramel Apple Cocktail

6 servings
1 tablespoon cinnamon sugar
1 lemon wedge
1 1/2 cups apple cider
6 tablespoons butterscotch schnapps
1 (750 ml) bottle sparkling wine, chilled
6 maraschino cherries

Spread cinnamon sugar onto a small plate or saucer. Run the lemon wedge along the rim of 6 champagne glasses, then dip the rims into the cinnamon sugar.
Combine apple cider and schnapps in a measuring cup.
Divide evenly among prepared glasses. Divide sparkling wine among glassses.
Garnish with cherry.

I make Cosmo's up ahead of time and they keep for months but I use Rose's lime juice not fresh lime juice. I would worry about the lemon juice, too.

Georgy, I nominate you for Woman of the Year. Who can put together a party faster than you? "Be Prepared" say you. I bet your cosmos are in a temperature controlled room.

I just keep them in the refrigerator... I don't make them up months ahead for entertaining, just a day or two, but what's left over does keep a long time because I've had them weeks or months later when I just felt like it. I generally don't drink unless I'm out or have company but every now and then it seems like a good idea. LOL I can testify that they taste just as good!

So we had this cocktail last night....... It was good, but a little strong. ("Lighter fluid," I believe my son-in-law said. LOL) I think I agree with Carol that more apple juice is needed. Either that or I should have shook the mixture with the ice a little longer. By the time we had downed half the glass we decided it was a delicious drink. One was definitely enough...... :-)
