I can sympathize. One of the main characters was killed off at the end of the Francis Oughterard series and I was so upset, I wrote to the author and complained.
She sent a very gracious reply, but I am still upset. :o)

Oh, I can totally sympathize. As a matter of fact, I'm rereading Book 6 of The Harry Potter Series at the moment and am dreading the death at the end of it--I cry every time I read it.

As a matter of fact, when that book came out, I ordered 2. DD and I were both reading them, but I had a little more free time that weekend than she did. Knew she was behind me, and she called JUST as I'd read about the death. She knew something was wrong (I was all choked up)and tried in the worst way to get me to spill the plot.

It's the sign of a really good writer, IMO, when they can get us that emotionally invested in their creations.

Not to mention the authors! We don't know them, but when Robert B. Parker died I felt so bad. I loved his writing and same as Sidney Sheldon.

I shed a tear at the end of David Benioff's "City of Thieves"! We've all commiserated with Dickens' characters too. "Black Beauty" anyone?

Absolutely!!! Even in some movies I feel sad about the characters for days! I think it's because we get to know them so intimately.

OH YES, NCIS (Bellesario) really knows how to get you very involved with the characters. I really don't want Mark Harmon or any of them to move on... in any direction. Almost the same with NCIS LA.

That's why I sometimes read the end of a book before getting too involved. When I was a little girl I couldn't read dog stories they almost always got killed

Bonnie Butler in Gone With The Wind. I was about 12-13 when I was reading this in bed in the middle of the night (couldn't put it down)and the tears were just streaming down my face.

Charlotte in Charlotte's Web just has me in tears every time. And Tom Robinson in To Kill A Mockingbird.

No, that just makes for a great writer, one who can draw us in to that level of feeling for the characters.

Now, don't throw stones at me...but, I still miss Charlie Harper from 2 1/2 men. LOL!

The show just isn't the same without him.

I'm with azzalea on the Harry Potter series.

The characters became almost like family in my mind, and it hurt my heart to say goodbye to some of them.

The deaths of characters and authors make me sad, but I absolutely cannot stand it when an animal dies. I avoid most Disney animal movies for that reason.

Several of my favorite authors have died in the last few years. I just hate that their voices and characters have been silenced forever.

Chi83- Game of Thrones is like Shakespeare- everyone seems to die as the story progresses. I felt the same way. I wont say at which part, in case you haven't read it yet- but I was ranting when I got home and DH was laughing at me.

I just finished the 4 books in the set just to discover that he wrote a 5th book. I am waiting for it to come out in paper back and that the last book resolves the story line.

Lambsear, I'm almost done with book 3 so you might be able to guess who I am referring to! Actually several of them, lol.

Book 2 took me weeks to get through but I can't seem to put book 3 down. I'm hoping book 4 is even better! Though at this rate it will be the same 3 character perspectives over and over lol.

In the end of book 4 Martin states that he couldn't contain the entire story in just one book, so he separated the last book into two. Book 4 deals with some characters (Sam, Jamie, Cersie, the Iron Isles, the Onion knight) and Book 5 will deal with others. By the time I got to book 4 my attention was fading. The fact that the story line was unresolved was tremendously disappointing.

Needless to say, I am waiting for book 5 in paperback. Or if the wait list at the library dissipates. (75 holds so far!)

Chi...I sooo wanna see the "In Death" books made into some movies...just so I can see Roark!! I have a vision of who I want and we've talked about this here at the Table...I just love the series...did you read the latest "New York To Dallas"? It's a pretty good read and something major happens in Eve's life in this book...

I did read it Liz! I even paid for the hardback because I like the series so much. I am mixed about seeing it into a movie. It would be fun to see the books come to life but I worry that the actors won't give these characters justice. I think Emily Deschanel would be a great Eve. She looks a bit how I picture her and I think she could pull off the hardness and passion mixed with awkwardness that is Eve! Her character in "Bones" seems very similar.

Game of Thrones is much, much heavier. I find myself skimming parts and getting confused over so many characters but the story line is really interesting.

Tally- We were SO sad when Hedwig died! We (my boys and I) still talk about that and Dobby. The books were so much better than the movies at getting you cought up with the shock and saddness.

My kids still get sad if you mention Big Dan and Little Ann - Where the Red Fern Grows. That was a tough one.

Oh Big Dan and Little Ann left me a crying mess! I am rereading Where the Red Fern Grows right now too! It does feel wonderful though to be able to get emotionally attached to the characters. It's what makes reading worthwhile.

I cry every time the little girl dies in "Penny Serenade" (Cary Grant and Irene Dunne play the parents).

"The Yearling" is another tear-jerker. Disney grabbed us over and over by tapping into every child's greatest fear: Abandonment.

How about "Old Yellar"? Disney got me real nad with that one.

re: Harry Potter. I just finished watching HPDH Pt2 on On Demand. I cried for like the last 30 - 35 minutes; and I had seen it in the theater once already. ugh. As far as the books, yep - when Snape turns to Harry and says "Look at me..." I would lose it every time I read it (three times!). And the time Harry asks his mother to "stay close to me.." as he walks into the forest at the end.
