Chick Lit vs. Contemporary Fiction

Has anyone been keeping track of the brouhaha over the fawning critical reception of Jonathan Franzen's new book Freedom? I was interested to read that authors like Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Crusie have been commenting that the New York Times seems to have quite a few white, male literary darlings and they're sick of it.

I'm not a fan of Picoult at all and haven't read Jennifer Crusie precisely because she is labeled "Chick Lit." However, I do enjoy things by Jonathan Tropper, Jess Walter and Douglas Coupland which are considered "contemporary fiction" and was startled by the thought that if their books had been written by female authors, they probably would be filed under "Chick Lit" because they are character driven and explore the emotional rather than intellectual aspects of things.

What are your thoughts?
