You must get an oxo vegetable peeler. Especially if you have to peel butternut squash! I've bought many a vegetable peeler and finally disposed of most of them. The oxo is great. I got mine at TJ Maxx

They are the absolute BEST! You can peel tomatoes and peaches with it too!!

I've used an OXO peeler for years, and years, and years. It's still sharp. I love that even my arthritic hands can hold and control it without pain.

I have the chunky OXO can manual can opener, too. Again, for all the same reasons, it's the best.

I have made a few batches of the pickles and they were good. I have also changed up the ingredients a touch with some interesting results. Less salt, add some sugar, celery seed, add jalapeno or serrano, less vinegar,pinch of tumeric, etc. Many possibilities and I just keep notes to what I like and dont like. Very fresh dill is a must here as anything less gives you undesirable results. I personally didnt care for the batch that I made with allspice so I have left it out of future batches. If you do use a hot pepper, be careful how much you use or you wont find anyone willing to help you eat them. I like hot and spicy but most dont care for it. I am currently collecting quart jars so I can make smaller batches with different variations until I find one that everyone likes. Duane

It's OK, Harborose, I did chuckle at your jest and I have been victimized by thieves. Let's not lose our sense of humor here, please. After all if we can't laugh surely we'll be crying. And I hate when that happens! My brother wants to get security cameras for the yard. For several years now, besides the roses being stolen, we've had our apple trees stripped clean of fruit either at night sometime or when we weren't at home for some reason. We use those apples for cooking all winter long and were very upset by the thought that someone climbed, and we think shook, the trees to get every last one down. The shaking is bad for the trees and my fear is some idiot will fall and then have the gall to sue us! We're pretty sure they went as deer bait no less because we've had several guys stop and ask if they could have them for that purpose. I really missed my applesauce, baked and apple pies the first year. Since then we've been trying to pick them earlier. They're not as sweet but at least we get some.

I know gardeners and farmers are the best "pay it forwarders" ! I give away what I cannot use, and my neighbor lets me pick if they have enough and I do not. The farmer who rents from me, I watch his little boy while he is in the fields, and he cuts wood for me. The farmers Dad and Mom, I take them jam and jelly, they reward me with bread and other produce. When I was entering at the fair this year the one worker in the Horticulture building was saying she is getting to disabled to take care of the Dahlias she has, and tonight I am going to pick them up. ( The previous owner gave them to her when she couldn't take care of them anymore) So, I am taking her my jam and jelly. My boss even lets me have paid time off to go pick berries in the summer and I give his wife lbs of berries.

Service, as for anything we purchase that we can't fix ourselves, is a concern...but if you take an up-front view of how often service has been needed on specific appliances...that greatly reduces it as a prominent decision factor. Argh! You hit a sore spot. I had a nice peeler for years that worked great, best one I ever had. I must have thrown it out with the peelings a few weeks ago. I picked up a cheapo one that didn't work as well but it was fine for now , I wanted to take some time to shop around for a nicer one. I threw that one out last time I used it too! I'm afraid to buy a better one now.

I HATE potato peelers!!!! They are awkward and time consuming.But,that's just me.LOL I can peel a potato with a sharp paring knife faster than I can with a potato peeler and take off the same amount of skin.Only thing I use a potato peeler for is to peel a carrot.

Paula, I can so relate. I had two that I loved. They weren't expensive...just the little silver ones but they were great. I think I paid 89 cents for them. I must have tossed them with the peels also. I tried ordering from the same company but the ones that came were not the same and in between times I've tried many, many peelers. The oxo is the best.

Nicole, I checked the models..it's the 20018 that I have. Too bad you don't have a T.J.'s nearby. I think they're only $5.00 there. I bought mine a couple of years ago.

I love the Kitchen Stuffs stores Nicole! Haven't been there in a while. I bought a peeler not long ago at Walmart, their George brand. It has a thick handle and it worked great.
Mom is always looking for a good peeler and I had her try it. She kept it and she loves it.
So I took hers which is a Rada. My Rada peeler wore out, and she's left-handed, so it will last a long time, since I'm right-handed.

I only use it for carrots....I prefer a paring knife for potatoes.

I've got the other OXO peeler, the serrated one and it is awesome. I never knew a peeler could work so well. It seems to work on anything. It's really sharp. Good luck in choosing!!

I use a paring knife for potatoes too, but that comment about peeling butternut squash sounds intriguing! They are so hard to peel with a knife!

OT: Where would I find a plain cheese slicer? No need for a fancy handle, just a cheapie metal thing with a wire across the end to slice the cheese. The kind of gadget you used to buy at Woolworth's for a dollar or less.

To cut cheese try fishing line or a good dental floss-unflavored- read that someplace. Not sure how it works
