Actually cooking a family dinner. Highly unusual!

Jambalaya, spinach salad, Jim'n Nicks specialty biscuits with honey butter.

Dessert: Paula Deen's eclair cake and peanut butter velveeta fudge!

I made my special spaghetti sauce yesterday. Today we are having 11 friends over for dinner. They are bringing the salad, garlic bread, wine and dessert. I do this once a year in the fall.

I've made more than my share of complex, gazillion-course, full days of pre-preparation meals and I'm pretty much done with them. I don't even much care to eat them anymore. While DH can certainly appreciate the snootypoo stuffed-stuff-with-heavy and contentedly ate rather a lot of it while he was doing the hotshot consulting gig, and has learned to make many "foodie" dishes (he does make a mean creme brulee), he'd honestly rather have what we call "bowl food". That's exactly what it sounds like - relaxing, unfussy food you can serve up in a bowl and just chill out kind of like you're a kid again. In the winter we're BIG on soup/stew-and-bread, "refrigerator velcro risotto", stuffed baked potatoes, a baked rotini glop I make with ricotta cheese and vegetables and chicken sausage that kind of looks like someone upchucked in a bowl but MAN does it taste good with your eyes closed. LOL In the summer the bowls contain stuff like the sorta-Greek couscous salad or shrimp and white bean salad recipes I recently posted. Sandwiches of many kinds make a lot of appearances in the warm months, but I try for more interesting ones than the dreary lunchbox fare. Monday night I made a great "chicken cordon bleu burger" that I didn't think was quite going to work but it was great. WAY better than Rachael Ray's version (which I didn't even know existed until after I made mine) if I may say so myself. I think we'll have it again as soon as the chicken patties go on sale again - for some reason the preformed ground chicken patties don't go all catfoody-textured like most ground poultry stuff does. :-) DH will eat almost anything if it's in a wrap or a pita... it's supposed to be hot and sticky on Monday so maybe I'll play the pita card and talk him into trying the Lebanese takeout that's in a local gas station (I kid you not!), because I could really go for some falafel and I HATE making it. The local grocery store had a loss-leader sale on boneless pork loin this week so I bought a half loin, cut it up for different uses and DH grilled it all at once this evening - pork is by far our favorite meat to have cold. Some thin slices were julienned up for a tasty wrap sandwich of pork, guacamole (I cheat, I buy the fantastic "Wholly Guacamole" because the avocados tend to be terrible here), and some chopped-up leftover vegetables mixed with a little salsa to hold them together in a whole-grain tortilla. DH has been hankering for a classic Waldorf salad for ages - a little nostalgia thing, I think - so tomorrow night's supper will be Waldorf salad and cold sliced pork with Stonewall Kitchen roasted garlic and onion jam (I warm it up and drizzle it on; I live near the factory store and so can get it cheap). I think next week is going to be a chicken week, though, because boneless skinless chicken thighs are on major sale and can also be grilled in quantity.

Today I spent the day at an amusement park. I don't eat park food so my friend and I stopped at a local family restaurant. I had a French Dip made on their special house bread instead of the usual roll. Their bread is similar to a Dutch Crunch. Once they ran out of rolls and made my sandwich on a hunk of that bread they cut into a roll. I have requested it that way since. I brought half home and it's reheating in the toaster oven as I type. For dessert I stopped and had a a strawberry ice cream cone, again at a local mom and pop place that carries Marianne's Ice Cream from Santa Cruz Ca.

Drinks from the bar before dinner - lots of bourbon drinkers. In winter, I prefer a glass of dry sherry $ dont like holding a cold glass with ice in cold weather, and I could drink ant whiskey “neat” if a gun where put to my head! With Thanksgiving Turkey, Beaujolais Nouveau is served - perfect with the richness of turkey. With lobster stew dinner champagne before and during the meal. Christmas Eve beef tenderloin means a good red wine. Water goblets are always at each place as well, and children /teens still prefer milk. Beer and soft drinks are onky served at a very informal cookout. I never serve ice tea. I know - a sacrilege in the south! I used to drink it all the time - leftover from breakfast pot of tea. I no longer make a breakfast pot and don’t like instant.

Yours both sound a lot better than mine. We're having baked chicken breast, steamed broccoli, biscuits and an apple/pear galette (if I get around to making it).

I have a corned beef brisket in the slow cooker. When it's done, I'll use the cooking liquid for the cabbage, carrots and potatoes. It's starting to smell good in here!

Salmon patties (croquettes to some folks), pasta salad, and Cowboy Bob's baked beans (canned, but oh so good!!!!) and for dessert....Cherry Pie.....

Glenda, even if I am given a chance to edit, I am likely to hit submit without ever seeing my mistakes. Enjoy your company today. I know they will enjoy what you cook.

Anyway, It will probably be in a bowel and not on a plagte here today. I made 6 quarts each of chicken soup and cabbage soup Thursday and Friday. Put some in the freezer, gave some to DD and today we will clean up some of each for dinner. In exchange for the soup, DD gave me some to die for home made olive bread, so that will complete our meal.

We went out for breakfast. A banquet hall in a little nearby town, has a big breakfast buffet on weekends and a smaller breakfast buffet all week long. You name it and they have it, and it is well prepared too.

I am not much on breakfast...I don't eat very many breakfast foods...but I had pork chops, hash browns, a piece of bacon, a little piece of sausage, biscuit, gravy, sliced strawberries....and put a cream cheese kolache in my pocket to bring home for my favorite possum.

After eating such a big breakfast....don't plan to have much else the rest of the day.

Chinese, if Lauren ever gets ready. Waiting on her clothes to dry and now she's in the shower. Alex doesn't want to go with us but wants something brought home. I have to cook dinner too, later.

I had Taco soup for lunch. Supper will be leftovers. Maybe something with the pork chops and gravy, baked potatoes and peach pie we have. Should I cut up the chops in the gravy and serve over potatoes?

The jambalaya was terrific, but the Paula Deen Eclair cake was a dud! Very dry.
Fudge was enjoyed.

I could have went to Judy's house and pigged out on egg salad sandwiches!!!! I love them! DH wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole! Urrrgh

We had chicken and dumplings. No veggie just chicken and dumplings and chocolate cupcakes.

I've got two chickens roasting in the oven. Potatoes and garlic waiting to boil for mashed taters.
Roasted beets and a spinach salad..might toss together some brownies too...and maybe some biscuits...

We had Meatloaf that was okay...DH wanted Beef stew.

I hosted my Book Club today, so I was busy cleaning and making desserts. Made Key Lime Pie, Banana Bread and some little chocolate cream puffs. Everything was good, (banana bread was all gone) but the cream puff things were kind of so so IMO.

Need to think about dinners for this week. I have some salmon that I could fix. And shrimp that needs to be cooked, but other then that...
