Looking for crochet scarf/shoulder wrap pattern

Or even guidelines... Although this is something I could probably do without a pattern, I would kind of like some sort of guideline to follow.

I was at a craft show over the weekend and someone there had something, that when folded in half (it was like a long tube), looked like a long scarf. However, in the middle, the two 'halves' were split on one side so that what you actually had was two sleeves with a flat section in the middle that (when opened up) fit across the shoulders. Does that make sense? I've been looking online but haven't seen anything similar yet.

If you kint here are instructions.

You will have to scroll down to see the directions for making the sleeves/scarf, just don't attach to the tube body of the sweater.

Hi, I'm making a scarf with Patons Brilliant now. It's an easy, openwork pattern from one of their books. You can go to www.patonsyarns.com. Click on Ladies knit items and you'll see a book "All that glitters". they call it a shawl (on the cover, part of a set, a little to hard to see detail, but is the same on shell and shawl) but it's only 17" wide, to me a cross between a scarf and shawl. Also you could adapt it and make it narrower. You need to register to use the website. Also, I just found an error on this pattern(which I had already seen) which they have posted on their correction page. If you want this let me know and I'll e-mail it to you if you're interested. What a lovely thing to do! I am sure it will bring back memories for him. If you are using worsted weight yarn, knitting a tubular scarf would produce an incredibly bulky item. Last year I made several "Harry Potter"-type scarves for young (and not-so-young) friends, and got the best results by using a straight k1, p1 ribbing, always slipping the first stitch. The ribbing contracts to look almost stockinette-like, yet has a nice, thick "hand". I cast on 40-48 stitches, depending on the size of the recipient. The weight of your yarn and your personal knitting gauge, as well as the size of your needles will also play a part- but do not obsess about it - it's a SCARF, not a finely fitted sweater! Good luck with the knitting (or crocheting, if you so decide), and to your son in his pursuit of life in the Judicial system.

Okay, that sweater is SOOO cute! Wish I had the patience to learn to knit. I can crochet like crazy but have not mastered the two-handed knitting.

I think you are looking for a SHRUG I did a google and there are loads of free patterns out there and they look esy

Yep, you want a shrug pattern. I don't have one for crochet, only for a knit one.

Try crocheting a piece wide enough to go around your hand and wrist, (you will sew this part closed later), then widen it until it's as wide as you want for the shoulder part, and do this wide until its almost as wide as you need it, then start decreasing it to match the other end. Sew the cuffs closed, and enjoy.

Check out this link it will take you to our own Crochet Forum and a serch I ddid on shrugs. I'm going to go back and look again too 'cause now I want to do one I'm tired of the things I'm crocheting!!

Thanks everyone! Yes, I think a shrug is what I'm looking for, although I haven't yet spotted one like the one at the craft show. When it wasn't being worn, it looked just like a scarf.

The scarf would have been crocheted as a long rectangle - the length would be equal to the length of a person's arms, if they were standing with arms stretched out to each side and then a measurement taken from left wrist to right wrist (including the width of the back). Then the rectangle would have been folded and joined together lengthwise, except for the section across the shoulders, which would have been left open.
