Answering Some of Your Questions (More of the Story)

Thanks for all of the replies to my post. I'll try to answer some of the questions you asked.

No, there was not a Catholic boy's school in that town. However there was an Episcopal Military Boys' school on the other side of town. We thought those boys looked mighty sharp in their uniforms!

Yes, I have heard all the stories of the mean nuns. I had 10 years of education by them and never saw this. Some of them could be very strict and sometimes cross but they were not mean and I never saw any physical punishment.

The school was in Faribault, in Southern Minnesota.

Wow, your school life posts are wonderful and have brought me out of lurkdom here at KT. I've been reading but not posting for about a year although I'm a member of the cooking forum and several of the gardening forums here at GW and have been around since 2004. There are several KT members here that can vouch for me.

Faribault, Minnesota. That gave me goose bumps! My ex-husband attended Shattuck. He spoke to me often about your school and how they looked forward to joint events such as dances. This would have been in the mid-1960s.

His descriptions of Shattuck have painted a gorgeous picture in my mind of both the school's facilities and the area surrounding the school. You grew up in a beautiful part of our country. I know the name of your school but since you've left it unmentioned I'll leave that to you.

I didn't realize your school had such a long history. I guess because it was younger than Shattuck my ex-husband just always thought of it as "new". lol Also, I "think" the two schools merged in the general timeframe of his attendance?

Unfortunately, he is recently deceased. My son now has his sharpshooter and archery medals, badges, and oodles of pictures including some of your school. He also played drums in Shattuck's marching band.

I've no doubt you received an excellent education - safe to say one of the best available in the country and look forward to reading more of your stories. You are an amazing woman and I'm thrilled to "meet" you, Seniorgal.

Small world, isn't it Tricia!!!

My school, as you know, was Bethlehem Academy.

Faribault, in my time, was known as the "city of churches."

I've always thought that, because of this, we were all very ecumenical long before the word became popular.

Hi Faye, Glad to answer questions for you, however, I think you have a beautiful garden and obviously are an accomplished gardener. After a terrible summer drought and water bills that were just stupid we did have an irrigation system installed about 2 yrs ago. It's an in ground Hunter system and we hired a professional. We also had to have a new well dug to feed the system. How often do I water? Probably too much. I have the system set to water at each station for 40 mins. It's more important to water deeply than to water often. We are having a dry period right now and I tend to let the system run everyday when we don't have rain. I probably don't need to water more than twice a week. As for fertilizer...I use granulated 10-10-10 in the spring in the flower beds. This year the bag is still sitting in the garage waiting to be spread out, lol! When I put the fertilizer out I just throw it by hand all over the flower beds. I am blessed with really great soil and I believe that is the big reason my plants do well. I have lots and lots of worms. When 3 of the 5 LARGE flower beds were made (2003) I added compost and good topsoil. The other 2 original flower beds have been in existance for 20+ years. My beds are what I call "raised beds" as they are approx 5" above the lawn level. I think this helps drainage. I also keep the beds mulched. The latest thing I've heard on this, coming from a business perspective, is that having a web site is becoming passe, with Facebook being where you want to have your information. Meanwhile, supposedly any people who are serious about promoting themselves have a web site up, are on Facebook AND are using Twitter as well.

Shaddy it is never a pain for anyone here to give another person an answer if they know the answer. That is how we all learn, there are no stupid questions when it comes to computers. Regarding cleaning the computer I no longer use the Disk cleanup feature that comes with the computer, I use Ccleaner, linked below. This I run very erratically, every 2 or 3 months and sometimes longer and leave it at the default settings. It works great for me. After that if I am going to leave the computer I will set it to defrag. Regarding scandisk I never use that at all. On very rare occasions I will run checkdisk. To do so click Start click Run type 'chkdsk' without the quotes You will see a window saying something that it will run when you next boot up your computer, agree with that and you are set. As checkdisk can take a while to run do the reboot when you are leaving for a coffee or lunch or whatever. Here is a link that might be useful: Ccleaner - slim version

A story? Well, one of the first things we did was an exercise out of the Not So Big House books: We made a list of the words we want to describe our house. In our case, we had a lot of words about function: Efficient, energy-efficient, good storage. And a lot of words about the "feel" of the house: Cozy, charming, nostalgic, friendly, inviting, light-filled. And words we don't like: Dramatic, modern, impressive, funky, trendy. That's not a story exactly, but it's kind of like setting a goal for how we want the house to work /feel /look. And we're very clear on what we want: A small (1600-1800 sf) house for the two of us after the children are gone, which will be built on our 45 acres of farmland. We want it to be age-friendly and to have all the everyday living spaces on the main level, and we want it all to be easy to clean and low-maintenance. We want every space on the main level to be used every day. We want to have a small upstairs for guests. We want a great outdoor kitchen with ample seating and a small pool. And we want it all to be mortgage-free. That doesn't feel like a story to me; it feels like a goal. Two comments on this thread with which I can really agree: While I believe in electricity, plumbing and even central air...I do love old houses. So while I would never be considered a 'purist' my perfect home would probably be similar to a car build on "Fast and Loud" LOL. I want it to look vintage, I want it to pay homage to vintage....but I want the car to go fast, stop on a dime and have air conditioning :) and I guess our not-yet-finished house's story would be 1920 meets 2014 technology I like the door picture ... but I'd say it's a cottage door leading to a small, picturesque home.
