Need some more answers please?

OK, you fellas give great advice, BUT, when doing a disk cleanup,how far do I go, in other words, what do i check, or delete or? Need that before I can proceed, sometimes I have done it and lost all my passwords, etc., so don't want to get into that again.

I am understanding, do the disk cleanup, then a defrag, I have this handwritten, but would like to print it out, as I can't read some of the writing, isn't that a hoot! After the diskcleanup, defrag, then a scandisk? Or is this listed somewhere that I don't remember?

thanks to anyone that can assist, know it's a pain for you but we do need assistance from time to time. I'd love to be able to do it all on my own, but can't so...

Shaddy it is never a pain for anyone here to give another person an answer if they know the answer. That is how we all learn, there are no stupid questions when it comes to computers.

Regarding cleaning the computer I no longer use the Disk cleanup feature that comes with the computer, I use Ccleaner, linked below. This I run very erratically, every 2 or 3 months and sometimes longer and leave it at the default settings. It works great for me. After that if I am going to leave the computer I will set it to defrag.

Regarding scandisk I never use that at all. On very rare occasions I will run checkdisk. To do so
click Start
click Run
type 'chkdsk' without the quotes
You will see a window saying something that it will run when you next boot up your computer, agree with that and you are set. As checkdisk can take a while to run do the reboot when you are leaving for a coffee or lunch or whatever.

If you run chkdsk, make sure you run it with the /f parameter so that it fixes errors it finds. Otherwise, it will only report that errors were found and do nothing about them.

As far as the order goes, I think it works best to do the scandisk/checkdisk before the defrag.

I have two Beallaras. One is in a south window, close to the glass, but the window is covered with a white sheer mesh curtain. The other is in a west window, again, up against the glass, but no window covering on this one. I haven't had the one in the west window long enough to say it will rebloom there, but it's looking good. The one in the south window was planning on blooming, but I got really busy with work and let it get too dry one too many times. Both of them have wrinkled pseudobulbs and spots, one of them has accordion leaves. But they are otherwise growing well. My recommendation is using the wooden skewer method. I just left mine stuck in the medium and pulled it out when I wanted to check it. If the skewer is damp, don't need to water. If it's dry, then it's ready for watering. Or you can cheat, like I'm doing now, and pot it in a clear orchid pot. Honestly, from the pics, yours looks good to me. It's a nice spring green, not too yellow, not too dark. You've got lots of leaves. I don't know if it's a Beallara for sure, but I'm guessing you can take care of it like it is some sort of Oncidium type and do well. Once it blooms, you should have a better chance of figuring out an ID on it. Don't worry about the wrinkled pseudobulbs unless the new growths are going wrinkly too; the older pseudobulbs just seem to do that. I agree, keep an eye out for a bloom spike around the fall. Hi Faye, Glad to answer questions for you, however, I think you have a beautiful garden and obviously are an accomplished gardener. After a terrible summer drought and water bills that were just stupid we did have an irrigation system installed about 2 yrs ago. It's an in ground Hunter system and we hired a professional. We also had to have a new well dug to feed the system. How often do I water? Probably too much. I have the system set to water at each station for 40 mins. It's more important to water deeply than to water often. We are having a dry period right now and I tend to let the system run everyday when we don't have rain. I probably don't need to water more than twice a week. As for fertilizer...I use granulated 10-10-10 in the spring in the flower beds. This year the bag is still sitting in the garage waiting to be spread out, lol! When I put the fertilizer out I just throw it by hand all over the flower beds. I am blessed with really great soil and I believe that is the big reason my plants do well. I have lots and lots of worms. When 3 of the 5 LARGE flower beds were made (2003) I added compost and good topsoil. The other 2 original flower beds have been in existance for 20+ years. My beds are what I call "raised beds" as they are approx 5" above the lawn level. I think this helps drainage. I also keep the beds mulched. For me it is a crap shoot every year when I plant in the summer. I don't start new seeds, but plant rooted cuttings. Years when we get good even rain and some periods of 80 degree weather, those plants do well. On years like the last couple where it has been drought conditions and 90++ degree days, I have not been able to baby them through the heat. Years like the last two I have had better luck nurturing my first plants until the cooler weather returns. My summer weather is affected greatly by hurricane activity and how the storms track.

Thank you both. graywings, if I remove the plant stand will I need to replace it with something? Will the room look off balance? Christine, the bottom of the chandelier is 31" from the table top. I did just paint but I was hoping to bring in some color with wt's. I'm open to suggestions there. I'm keeping my eyes open for an area rug that will work in there. The center piece on the table is blah..I love the cast iron candle stick but it obviously needs something more/different. Oh, and haha, I just remembered the decorating of the chandelier my 8 year old did! The green bows are not staying, lol.

In Win2000, XP and Vista Scandisk is called Error-checking. I have never read a consensus opinion regarding the use of the utility.

My personal opinion, and regular recommendation, is to incorporate Error-checking in a user's normal maintenance protocol with a minimum time frame of once a month. Sooner, later, or not-at-all cannot hurt anything. My thought is maintenance is maintenance.

Regarding CCleaner, I have to strongly support Owbist's recommendation to use the application in default settings only.

Hi,

Question: I noticed that when I (used to) run 'chkdsk /f' (space between the 'k' and the '/'), the computer would only check in 3 stages. But if I go to My Computer > Properties > Tools > Error-Checking, then click "check now'" and tick the two boxes there, then when the computer does its scan at re-boot it will go through 5 stages. Would that make this latter method better ? Or is there a way to enter the information in the 'run' window to put it through all 5 stages ?

Btw, I use XP.

I think that Microsoft considers the second method to be a better approach. The help for chkdsk gives options to do less checking, but I don't see one to do more checking.

THANK YOU, one and all, I need affirmation sometimes to be sure that I am doing it right, and this was it.
So much knowledge here, and when it is shared, so much more is gained.
