This question could get some funny answers-I hope.I

I have $40 to spend in June. I could use it to buy 5 hostas or one new bra. Any suggestions?

This isn't really a joke. The situation has me truly torn. I can't decide which way to go. I don't have a pressing need for the hostas and a not really pressing need for the alternative. But the hostas are sooooooo tempting. Gosh I like First Frost.

Get the hostas. What size are you? I will send you one of mine. Hostas are far more important and the season just started. Boobs will be there in the winter. Can I say that? Paula

*Random pregnant lady amused...and wants to steal/share your popcorn* I'm siding with mrlike2u. If someone asks a question, they're asking for a specific answer, and it's a good idea to give one, or don't at least don't get knickers in a twist. (*yawn-it's late*) It's part of keeping a friendly fourm where people feel comfortable asking questions. Give advice if you'd like, but always err on the side of super politeness/harmlessness because you never know who's feeling down-you might hurt them more than you intended...also you don't want to come across as uppity. In the end we all really know nothing in comparison to it all. There's just too much out there to learn. To Wendync, you might want to start with a little stronger inside light for this plant, then supervise for any mellowing of color or drooping of leaves that would indicate burnout or too much light because inside "shade" is different than outside "shade". It looks like it might be an outside tropical plant that you can possibly grow inside, if you watch it carefully. Think of this as an opportunity to practice your plant whispering skills, and move it if it starts complaining about too much sun. If you type "Whitfieldia elongata" into google or some other search engine you can go to the encyclopedia type page other garden sites have on it. One lady who reviewed the plant grew it as a house plant in a west facing window and loves it. She also mentioned cutting it back, probably when it was out of bloom, to encourage more fullness. As far as feeding goes, I'd go easy, but still do it every few weeks or so, especially when growth is steady. It seems to be able to get pretty big (4-8 feet?) , and feeding plants tends to make them take off, so you'll have to get a feel for it. As previously mentioned, pruning will be a great idea, and it should promote a more compact, full plant. Keep them house temperature warm... As for watering, I'd say, keep it in a well drained mix (maybe a little extra perlite in some normal potting soil), water, then watch the plant for the first subtle signs it needs more-a slight color change or a slight reduction in the turgidness of the leaves and don't rot or fry the roots while you're getting to know it. The key here is careful watching until you get a feel for this plant. It's definitely gorgeous. I think that's all I can tell you based on the info I've found. Basically just watch and experiment, like mrlike2u said. If people can grow mini roses inside, you can definitely grow this little guy inside too, and it should be easier because roses are sun/food/water hogs as well as pest magnets (that I happen to love growing inside because they're so cute). Oh, and if, by chance, you have any trouble getting it to rebloom, recheck the lighting. Sorry I can't give you more than this. I wish I had personal experience like you're asking for, but all I can really do is tell you to trust your instincts and wish you the best... ...just like everyone else here who knows "nothing" but has a love for plants and a will to keep them alive. -R

Well I checked on ebay tonight and for not being "in-thing" sorry Marian hehehe they are selling like hot cakes..LOL Since our library closed for the summer LOL I can't even check to see if they have any books on the subject so I have been searching the net...........Thanks Marian I never thought about how to read knitting patterns which I don't know how to do..........but my son thinks I am "smart" LoL I told him I have no experience in knitting or crocheting but he said you had no experience in quilting or embroidery and look what you can do now all self taught...he really is trying to "butter me up" LOL.... I have been looking at a lot of different brands and some are no longer made so buying a used one may be hard to find parts.....for me this is like looking for a needle in a haystack since I never did this craft! To answer (some of) your original question(s), whenever I've worked with a decorator they have 100% stood behind the products they've helped me obtain. Recently a headboard I had made (through the designer) was delivered in the wrong colorway: I refused delivery and called the designer. They immediately (& kindly) apologized and said they would take care of it. Within twenty-four hours they called me back to let me know it was being made again, in the correct colorway and as a rush order. She was professional, courteous (but not obsequious) and sounded genuinely kind and concerned about my (headboard) happiness. Then when the delivery company the designer had contracted gave me a hard time just this past Thursday (trying to charge me for a redelivery fee when delivering the new, correct headboard) I called her again. Again, she immediately did everything right, she said all the right things (sincerely apologized, told me I was right, said she would contact the delivery company, etc.), and took care of it. Like a few above respondents (and I'm sorry I didn't carefully read all of them -- you've a lot of supporters out there!) my experience has been that the designer / decorator is my advocate and has left me feeling cossetted. The only negative experience I had (and it was a doozy) was with an unethical kitchen designer and we contentiously parted ways. But she'd made it abundantly clear that if anything hit the fan I'd be left to clean it up. Alone. She'd be off getting her nails done and screwing her next client. We "lost" some money with her but when I think of the money we would have lost (and that I would have had to spend in therapy / legal fees!) had we continued our "relationship" with her it was well worth it. She happens to be our neighbor! Well, a few houses up the street but we see each other all the time, walking, driving, etc. So I totally understand the uncomfortable social situations! But at the end of the day, I really was right, and not just because "the customer is always right." I was right because I was consistent, forthright, genuine and HONEST. She, like your former designer, was inconsistent, evasive, disingenuous and a prevaricator. Period.

I don't know how long it takes but it should be on the seed package or a seed site online. I leave them in the field until after the first light frost, oh yeah, you're in Florida! ( sorry, I forgot. lol!) You'll have to go by the number of days. The little curly thing near the fruit should be dead when it's ready, or you can thump it to see if it sounds hollow. (I have never been able to get that, myself. ) When I lived in Ontario I kept my squash in a damp stone root cellar under the very old house spread out on wooden pallets. Many didn't last very long, occasionally one would keep into Jan and the mice nibbled on them, even with two cats. Here in BC, I live on the top floor of a house, our office is on the ground floor and there's a large basement under that. I kept the squash in the office, closed in the wintertime, on an open wire shelf unit with the heat set at 10c to keep the pipes from freezing. It's much drier here than in Ontario also. They all kept much longer. We cooked the last one last week and it was still hard! Last year I left them out in the garden to harden in the sun for a few weeks after cutting off the vine, rolling them every few days or so then brought them in. I didn't do that in Ontario because of the fall rain and the damage from deer running over them, which happened a lot. I'm doing it again this year. I'm impressed with how long they lasted here last winter! I have read that they keep well at a cool room temp so if you have a cool room in your house, I would look at storing them there, someplace with good air circulation and spread out so not to touch each other. They're space hogs.

Thank you for the mid-day giggle. (I'm checking in during my lunch hour.)

You may want to ask someone that isn't hosta obsessed... many from this group don't even get dressed in the morning before going out to the garden...we aren't exactly the type of people who would care if you went "au naturel".

funny question.... my practical answer: spend $35 on hostas, shop the thrift shop or bargain table at the factory stores for a $5.00 bra.

Then here's a great idea for what to do with the old bra, found this on Pinterest. It made me laugh, though I don't think I will do it in my garden.

Bra? What's that? Certainly not something that goes with my gardening fashion statement. Muddy boots, muddy hoodie, muddy sweat pants or pajama pants, muddy gloves, and a semi muddy hat. This is possibly one of the best threads I've read all spring! Now that sure was fun. Thanks, WW

Muddy this that and the other, calls for an outdoor shower. Which is in the works for our remodel. Located near the back door. Saves a lot of housework too.

I'd forgotten there was a Hosta 'Double D Cup'...... it was Stuart Asch named it..... Rosie really nailed it. :)

LOL - I couldn't live without a bra. Double D Cup is on my wish list for good reason - too bad the OS is $100.00. But if you have enough bras, go for the hostas. You can NEVER EVER have enough hostas. Check out Autumn Frost. It's much flashier than it's ancestor, very beautiful.

Off topic, but does anyone know if the tissue culture Double D is staying true to the original?

Too funny! So much excellent suggestions as to how I should handle my problems.

I like the idea of ADG, but its leaves are way to large and so is DD. Is there a hosta named Silicon Gel?

Or how about a mini relative of ADG?

I'm thinking you buy a large leafed hosta and fashion the leaves into a bra. Call it your "Eve" bra. Just don't let the rabbits nibble on it...

I would go for the hosta too - bras are the number one thing I hate to spend money on...seems like such a waste. Thanks for the laugh this evening!

OK-I've gotten the message. Time to go hosta shopping,maybe for some with names appropriate to my question. I can't buy Northern Exposure. I'd just bought one and it is doing just fine. The squirrels did not dig up my Northern Exposure.

And REALLY, Blue Mouse Ears is NOT an option. I am not THAT small for Pete's sake.

I am on my way to search the Hosta Library but as always I am open for suggestions. I can't count on Ken - he was speechless - can you believe that?

I might just be the only one firmly on the other side of the fence on this one.
If I needed a new bra, I'd buy that. Once my bras wear out, there's no thrift-store shopping that's going to find the size I wear! (let's just say it's not in the first 4 letters of the alphabet)

But then I'd still buy more hostas if I had room!

Lol. I dont often get here into the forum but am a member of the American Hosta Society group in Facebook. Had to copy the question and some of the responses was to funny to not pass up. Dont worry all names where removed to protect the innocent. This was one member's suggestion to help:

" don't fear, she should be able to get a good $17 boxed bra, two First Frost Hosta's and change back."
