Should I get some elderberry plants?
Comments (28)I planted elderberries in the back corner in a damp area. years ago my father in law and i spent all day up in the thumb gathering them. My wife made the best jam and Pa"s wine maker freind made the best wine. The birds love them. I pick them and eat them fresh for the health of it. They are not the tastiest berries fresh but good for you.I dug mine from the wild and a freind donated some. I have the red and black varieties.Leave the unknown berries . some varieties of viburnums are edible and some are not. If you can grow them try some of the service berries. If you can catch them at the right time they are very good but you have to keep the birds away. Usually i just share them. Happy gardening Johnny...See MoreAre there any botanist out there that could share some info?
Comments (5)And horticulture-related careers tend to be very subject to economic whims as well. When times are tight, the green industry is one of the first to feel the effects - the majority of plant-related careers are based on the discretionary income of those doing the hiring, whether that's a private client, a wholesale grower, retail nursery or a place like Disney World. And discretionary budgets - landscaping projects, travelling to amusement parks, even buying new plants at the local garden center - are the first to get cut back. This is pretty short and to the point, but most folks who get involved in this industry do so because they have a passion for some aspect of it. With very few exceptions, it's all they can do to pull a living wage from this activity. Don't plan on getting rich from it or even accumulating a decent retirement plan, cuz it ain't gonna happen!...See MoreThis could get addicting- with the right info- Ha ha
Comments (6)Personally I hate starting seeds indoors -messy and I am forgetful and if you can't tell by now, lazy. If you haven't already, you should check out the Winter Sowing Forum first has anyone ever simply dropped IRIS seeds in the fall and received new plants (went outside today and found beautiful spit open pods with dark seeds). Chances are whatever they would produce would be different that the mother plant that produced the seed. The little babies would likely not survive in among the larger full grown rhizomes. It would probably be better to start them in pots, even if you just sink the pots into the ground. See starting iris from seed There are lots of great FAQ at the Winter Sowing Forum. A Winter Sower's Calendar There are also seed lists of what to start and when. Second a request, what are your favorites? what plants are simple to get the seeds and what do you do? Cosmos and morning glories are 2 of my favorites. There are numerous varieties, and the seed is easy to collect, and fairly fool proof to grow. Some cosmos varieties Some Morning Glory varieties Oh...and Some poppy varieties Sue...See MoreHelpful Info (getting rid of some redundant posts)
Comments (1)Hi Mike, Many of the forums have that sort of info in an FAQ link at the top of the page. FAQ are usually a group effort of the members who frequent the forum. One member will ask for input from the members who frequent the forum. That information is then compiled and submitted to GW for approval. Upon approval GW manage ment will then authorize the organizing member to input the info into the system. In the past, the FAQ for 'some' forums has been the work of only one member...such is the case at the Canna Forum and The Wintersowing Forum. You might start by making a post at Violets like What should be included in the FAQ here at Violets? Once you see what the most frequently asked things are that should be addressed, you, or another member could then start to compile the info for input, or you could ask each question individually and get more input. I have been working some on redoing the FAQ at the Seed Exchange that I visit daily. There is an existing set of FAQ but some of the info does not pertain so much to trading, or is obsolete (postage costs) and there is a lot of info that has not been addressed at all. Once the Seed Exchange FAQ are newly compiled, I will submit them for approval, and then they will do something that will allow me to input them. hth Sue Here is a link that might be useful: List of the forums that have some sort of FAQ...See Morewendync
