It's not ornaments, but I have been sewing... 2 photos...

I'm in a swap over at Flickr, it's for a mini-quilt, about 12" square, and the theme was "house". Well, I couldn't do a traditional house, you know me. I had to go more whimsical and since my partner likes whimsy and animals, I added hedgehogs and manatees, as it seemed fitting.

This is the front, the back isn't anything special, just a print fabric with a label.

And this is the front with the door opened. It's held shut with magnets. I still want to make a little banner/bunting thing that will read "go fly a kite" to string along the top of the castle, under that hedgie. I'll do that today and then I'll mail this off on Monday.

It was fun to make, I think she'll like it. It took me about a week to finish, there was a lot of sketching and planning that went into this.

Good discussion here and many valid points. I think much of this comes down to consideration of others. I could easily post twenty times a day asking various questions, showing time-lapse photos of cultivars, posting question threads, photos, etc. but I don't. I am aware that I am not the only person on the planet that matters and that posting too many photos becomes overwhelming and distracting to others. When it does become a bit of an unintentional problem is when there are 20 galleries that are spread out over several weeks/months that get bumped by 3-4 photos, then another user bumpers 2-3 galleries, etc. and all of the sudden the top 8 posts are galleries - even if they are created by different forum users and bumped by seperate people as well. As I've said before, from my end, I'll still post some photos from time to time, for sure some time-lapse photo series and make contributions/questions, but as to making/contributing to galleries that are going to get lost in the gallery section with one response, oblivious to most, I'm not going to waste my time. I did ask for the same pattern next year and am planning to put them all together. I wanted to make a full-size quilt in all blues and therefore need more than just the 12 from this year. I figure, instead of making them myself, I'd do the same block next year and then make a spectacular quilt and pillow set! The overall effect didn't come through too well in the group shot, but I wanted to try to show it anyways. I think this is the type of block that looks a lot better when there are a bunch of them grouped into a pattern, rather than individually.

Welcome Renee! I love your energy. You are ready to begin a wonderful adventure. First you must decide what machine you need and if you plan on sewing for your family you will need your own machine. By machine I do not mean a plastic overpriced object that will be a source of major frustration. Your first step will be to find a machine which will fit you and your needs. Read back on some of the posting on this forum. People have shared some excellent information. Make notes of any machines mentioned in your price range. Go to a reputable dealer.......which means not a box store which seems not to give service once the machine is purchased. Do your homework, look, read, ask.......if you have sewer friends or family ask their opinions on machines (makers, models, etc.) Go and "test drive" ALOT at various stores...take time to sit down and take demonstrations.....hands on, that means YOU sewing and not the person selling. Look and look and look somemore. It costs nothing but time and energy. If you have a friend, cousin, mother, aunt whatever who sew ask them about their machine, you might luck in and get a machine someone isn't using anymore. Begin by asking someone who sews and lives close by if they are willing to help you. Read....and I mean read, so terms that are thrown out to you aren't going to be foreign. Ask about classes where machines are sold so a sewer learns her machine. You should get a class or classes....and if they are open to helping you with any machine problems you run into. Check out classes for begining sewers.......get a pattern (in the sizes you need) in the "Sewing for Dummies" (I hate the word Dummies...beginners is more to my taste..a dummy is one who doesn't try in my words). Or if you ask a clerk they can say if something you like is really too challenging. Ask, ask, ask. Buy yourself some good quality sewing items. Ask your sewing friends or relatives what tools they NEED. Pins, a seam ripper, scissors and good thread spring to mind. When you first begin, get some inexpensive fabric (why ruin good stuff) and don't expect to have perfect results......give yourself time and enjoy the journey. Garage sales are sometimes good places to find a machine, but would suggest having someone with you who sews to check out a machine before purchasing that way. Enjoy yourself, you have begun a journey that is both exciting and challenging. People on this site are most helpful and will try to help. We have people at all levels of skill and they are most forthcoming with help. So you are in the right place, enjoy the journey and Happy Easter to you and yours. Budster

That is great to hear kpk63! My kitchen is small and I am leaning towards no dishwasher in favor of cabinetry. So the internal debate of single sink with versatile accessories vs. traditional double sink for daily dish washing seriously keeps me awake at night. A couple of questions though if you don't mind: How many dinner plates, cups, et cetera does the drying rack hold? In other words, can you wash all the dinner dishes without stopping to dry half-way through? Have you used the colander for straining pasta? I need to know specifically if the holes allow for a thorough draining. The Prolific sink is gorgeous and it is what I *really* want but if the function of the racks/ wash pan/ colander isn't there I cannot justify the cost.

Thank you all so much, such lovely compliments. :) I'm getting the big head! And I'd like to live there, too. I wonder what their dungeon looks like?

Here's the label- my personal info is on the flip side of this, upside down so you can read it when you flip it up.

maire_cate- I got the stone fabric for the main castle at a local(50 miles away) shop but I know that Maricopa Quilt Company has it, also. What I generally do is go to the link below, type in my search words (in this case "landscape rock") and hit thumbnails. It came up with 148 items in 30 something shops, then I looked at the thumbnails until I found something I liked. I couldn't believe I actually found one that would work, though, without having to order it. There were a couple online I liked better, but time was of the essence so I got this. The fabric for the distant village is actually a dull blue floral.

My partner in this swap does wonderful work and always sends her partners lovely things, so I felt really good about putting that much time into this. It's fun to make things for people when you know they'll really appreciate it and reciprocate. Hers is already on the way to me, I'll show it to you when I've gotten it.

Linda, that's the first time I've done my binding like that, I just couldn't find anything that looked right all the way around. :)

That is precious! As a quilter, I can appreciate how much work went into creating this masterpiece. The binding really is great, and your "thread painting" is terrific. I would definitely enter this in a contest.

Saying that it is one of the cutest things I've seen simply won't do it justice! That is truly a work of art and I agree that you should enter it in a contest for more people to enjoy. No, Zee- you have to order and pay each shop individually. Jot some notes about which shops have what and see if any of them overlap, that's the only way to save on shipping. Also, have you looked at equilter.com and craftconn.com? Both have LOTS of fabrics. I didn't know you collected peace signs and zebras. Ever find a zebra with peace signs on it? :)

The detail, colours and whimsy are just fantastic. It's so bright and cheerful, looks like a fun place to me. I love that you added the animals......and unusual ones at that.

No, pretty sure my partner doesn't come here, she's either busy sewing or taking care of her elderly mom and I think I would recognize her if she was a buddy here. She works hard at that so I'm happy to send her something fun and lighthearted.

Judy does what I've always done when seeing your creations Flamey. I have to come back or look them over time and again to see all of the tiniest of details you add. I remember dissecting Nectarine and her paraphernalia when I had her just to see the terrific handy work and how your talented and creative mind works. :)

Minnie, the door knob shows in the first photo, it's metal, kind of heavy and from the miniature dept of Hobby Lobby, I stitched it on thru the little nail holes.
