You know, I will probably get blasted for this, and please don't think I don't understand your love for your pet, but I would be changing vets. A dog in that kind of condition, if you are trying to save it, should be in the vet hospital on IVs and not being treated at home.

And I will further add, we don't fully understand the depth of an animal's suffering. They suffer stoically, for the most part. That doesn't mean they aren't suffering horribly.

Just because we don't want to take that final step, and it can be very hard to do, that doesn't mean that we should pretend that dogs have the same kind of feelings about death that we do. Dogs live in the moment. They don't fear death or think about it. If a dog is suffering, or any animal, for that matter, it is wrong to not alleviate their suffering, even if it means that it causes pain and heart ache for ourselves.

I know you love her. I have not commented before because I could not honestly comment and not say this. There is something seriously wrong here...including your veterinarian.

It reminds me of a foal born to one of my mares, and it wouldn't nurse. I took it back and forth to the vet for two days, for IVs. I saw that it wasn't getting better and you can't raise a horse on IVs. I gave him a chance, but he wasn't getting better. I told the vet, to put him down, and he chastised me for it...as if I wasn't willoing to try.
I have raised horses many years, and I saw that the foal was getting weaker and the mare was drying up. I also saw the $$$$ signs in the vet's eyes.

My vet isnt charging me anything anymore.. I never got charged today. Everybody we have talked to has mentioned this vet and thats who we say we are going to... I got more meds today etc and No charge..... He keeps his payments low so that his patients can do the best for their animals. The other day with blood work, labs, xray, fluids etc he only charged me 40.00 cause I told him my money is running low.. The emergency vet cost me a huge amount of money..

The meds today are not working. I will be taking her back tomorrow

Always learning-------- I have tried everything. I have water in there she wont touch, I have tried baby rice cereal. I have tried rice with chicken, I have tried lunch meat, cheese, She will not eat or drink.. When I try and open her mouth she clenches her jaw so tight I cant open it.. thats not like her,, I really really wish I could read her eyes.. She has nothing in her stomach, but she is now vomiting huge amounts of slime...

It's difficult to read this post because my eyes are tearing. I'm so hoping for a miracle for you and Sweetie.

My heart aches for you, I KNOW what your going through and I hope and pray your Sweetie can get better.
I understand what Marilyn is saying though....as hard as it is, and AS GUILTY as I was...for not acting sooner...we hold on because we LOVE them so so much, and our hearts are breaking.....but the most loving final act we can do is stop their suffering. I waited until I could wait no longer, and looking back, I wish I had made the decision 2 weeks ago....but just couldn't do it.

Melanie, try and post on the pet forum. Meghan, the vet who posts there, is very knowledgeable and might have some suggestions for you or think of something else than can be checked. Or maybe your vet could consult with another vet.
One suggestion I would have is to do a chest ultrasound. One of our dogs stopped eating and was terribly ill, throwing up mucous constantly. It turned out he had a tumor on his heart and the mucous he was throwing up was coming from his lungs because he was retaining fluids.

((((Melanie)))) I'm sorry about your Sweetie but I have to agree with Marilyn.It comes to a point when we have to think about their suffering and you know she is suffering.I truly hope things get better but I also hope that you know when to make the right decision.

I understand what Marilyn is saying also. It sounds to me like Sweetie is gravely ill. Your vet sounds like a saint to charge you that minimal amount for all he did. I'm sure he wanted to give Sweetie one more treatment to see if she would get better.

My dog had symptoms similar, except not for the bleeding, when he ate a rock and had obstructed his stomach outlet but they diagnosed it after feeling the rock then taking an xray. So I don't suppose that would be the problem. Just trying to think of a solution here is all.

I logged on to say what Marilyn said. The vet should be keeping your dog. A friend was going through something similar this weekend and she just announced that her dog has improved this evening - she gave him Pepto Bismol. I have no idea if that is advisable, but you can research it. (Or someone here can jump in). Better than watching an animal suffer.

The slime is probably mucous she is creating from nausea. I have no idea what could be wrong with her, but I also think that she should be in an animal hospital under veterinary care. She's just too sick and I'm so sorry for all of you, Melanie. I know you have medical knowledge and experience but you can't (and probably shouldn't) bear this burden alone.

I really am sorry and I'm glad you like and trust your vet. That's not always the case when a vet is unable to save a pet.

Shanzie went thru an episode last winter, Zee, with vomiting and bloody diarrhea and the slimy mucous and we were using Pepto and it would give her relief for a couple of hours, but not enough to fix her up. She had a dog flu that was going around. Pepto has aspirin in it, though and can irritate some tummies.

I have to agree with the others who are questioning whether Sweetie is gravely ill.

It's the hardest thing, as a pet lover, to make that last, hard, final decision. But, as loving pet owners, we need to do that when our pets are suffering, as it clearly sounds like Sweetie is doing. Blood, vomiting slime, loose stools - what kind of quality of life is that? Who are you keeping her alive for - you? Or her? Is she able to do all the things she loves doing? No. Again, addresses the quality of life issue. Just because your vet is giving you a "deal" isn't a reason to continue Sweetie's poor quality of life.

I'm a pet owner and have been in your shoes. It's the hardest decision to make. I would rather let my pet go a day too early than a day too late.
