awww, do Piggy sue and Zelda still like each other?

around here the raccoons eat the cats.

The raccoons don't bother anything here, except they will kill the chickens if I don't put them up at night, but you can see that they get fed plenty. That is just a small amount of the food that I put out every night. Like usually 70 or 80 lb. of dog food. Fortunately, I hardly ever have to buy it...it is all donated to me.

Actually, Zelda never liked Piggy Sue. She used to follow her around, just to keep an eye on her. Almost every evening my three stupid dogs will bark at the hogs. No matter how many times I have called them down for it, scolded them for it, they will still do it. The worst is an old dog from the shelter that I adopted when I had my dog, Bobby, put down. Coach will start, Jan, the catahoula, will join in, and Zelda will run in and try to bite them. I always, always make them stop, but they will do it again the next night. Piggy Sue pretty much ignores them, but Piggy Lee will go after them...especially Coach.
I came home one day to find Coach in the bayou, just barely hanging on. I am sure he got after Piggy Lee and she head butted him into the bayou. Did he learn a lesson? No. He still goes after her every night. I adopted him to be a watch dog, and the ONLY thing he barks at is the hogs. You could come here and carry off everything I have and he won't
acknowledge you at all. Thankfully, Jan is a good watch dog and will bark when someone comes up.

I am afraid Coach is going to get me badly hurt or even killed, because even though the hogs won't bother me, when they go after him, they will run over me to get to him. So every night I have to try and get him to stay back or get on the porch. It is the same thing every night. I adopted him because he had been at the shelter for 5 months, but
he is the most exasperating animal that I've ever had.

Marilyn, your pictures and stories are better than tv!! So funny! I love the picture of the pig and dog running. Amazing how well most of your animals get along together. Keep 'em coming!!

I forgot to mention that Piggy Lee was the same size the first time I saw her. She used to come eat with the raccoons.
She was about the size of a cat. Then, before long, she was the size of my dog, and one night, I went out to look at her with a flashlight, and she was nearly the size of a pony. She was still wild then and would jump in the bayou, if she had to, to get away from me. Then she found where Piggy Sue slept (in a big dog run) and used to come sleep outside of it, as close to her as she could get. She saw me petting and giving Piggy Sue treats and she is pretty smart...she decided that is the life she wanted, so she tamed down. Now she knows her name...and if I say, "Let me scratch your butt" she falls down on her side. She will let me rub her eyes, but won't let me look at her teeth.

I know she makes you smile.....
People ask us some times "WHY" do YOU have so many animals.
My MIL likes to ask "What good are they" ?
and my answer has become...
BECAUSE they make me smile !

I like animals a whole lot better than I like people and animals like me a whole lot better than people like me...so it is a good mix.

Please tell me about Zelda -- what breed is she 'mostly'? (I love to see a dog 'fly' like that! LOL )

Lavon...how many cats or how many raccoons? The most raccoons I have counted at one time was about 60, but I don't think there are that many now, although there is no telling how many come during the night. Like my husband said, there is no telling what comes down there at night to eat. Very seldom is there any food left over.

As for how many cats...I don't know that either. Maybe 30. I feed a little more than 20 lb. of cat food a day, plus some of the cats eat with the raccoons too.

People (who know hogs) are more surprised that the hogs don't bother my chickens than the raccoons not bothering the cats. They tell me that hogs love to eat chickens.
But, everything here is fed so well...they really don't bother each other very much. Tonight Piggy Lee got after Coach (my old dog), and I had to chase her off of him, but I can see why she did it. He will not leave her alone. I feel sorry for him, but he is the dumbest dog I have ever had. Amos, the donkey, stomped him a few days ago, and at least he learned to stay out of that pasture but no matter how many times Piggy Lee gets after him, he won't leave her alone, and always picks the fights.

Chisue, I don't know for sure what kind of dog Zelda is mixed up with. She is part dachshund for sure, and I thought maybe part Schnauzer of maybe even Scottie. I found her when she was about 5 months old, sitting by the highway about a mile from here. No houses around. I couldn't find her owner but I thought she might have belonged to our local hog hunter's girlfriend. They both went to prison for DWIs...about the time she showed up, but I have since found out she didn't belong to her. I thought she did because their hog dogs would often run after their truck when they went somewhere, and Zelda had a hunk bitten out of her back leg, like those dogs will do to other animals. I should have known she didn't belong to them.
She was healthy, clean, and didn't have fleas. I have no idea how she ended up just sitting by the highway.

Marilyn, I have often wondered what comes around here after dark, too !
We use to have a lot of Kangaroo rats and they only came out at night, but this year I havent seen any at all.

Marilyn -- Thanks for the info on Zelda. I can see 'terrier' in her ears and muzzle. I bet she's happy she sat down next to YOUR road!
