Cooking bag for turkey

I'm cooking the turkey in a Reynolds bag this year for the first time. I hope it turns out well.

I'm sure it will be great. I've never used one but the last two years I've been slightly tenting mine and it turns out great. No more brining for me. I think that was a real pain. I found this recipe that calls for a bottle of champagne and it turns out to be the moistest turkeyÃ¢ÂÂ¦..easy-peasy!

Keeping my fingers crossed for you. I put our 23 lbs bird in the oven a short time ago.

Be sure to let us know how yours turns out. Have you used Reynolds bags for other things?

When I have used the convection to roast a turkey, I turn the turkey 180 at least once. It seems that my convection blows on one side of a large item more and less on the other side. I learned this first time when my turkey was less done on one side than the other. This is not true on smaller items. I also do not insert the probe or any other temperature devices until at least half way through the cooking. I always use at least two thermometers in two different places on a turkey to assure that it is done overall. DP

It was great, thanks for asking. I also use a Reynolds bag, instead of precooking it on Wed as I first thought I would do, and it looked great and was moist & tasty. I bought 2 cooking magazines to use as stocking stuffers this Xmas. I used both for recipes for the meal! I was very careful and didn't spill or wrinkle them before sticking them back in the Xmas gift box. The highlight was skyping with my sister & her family in Europe. My 2 yo niece said later "I wanted to talk to Jean but she was busy looking for things on the computer". No, no, no! I was busy preparing food for the 11 people standing in my kitchen that's why I didn't get much face time! I'll have to skype with them again today while it's nice and quiet here. For the first time in years, I ended up with a seat at the main dining room table and not the auxiliary table. Actually I prefer the auxiliary table but 4 guests, some newbies, sat down first (I don't do a seating chart - it's always a free for all). I think they thought of it as the kid's table and wanted relive their youth.

Turkey gravy using roasting bag?

I've made gravy after using an oven roasting bag with no problem. It isn't really pale if I remember right. You can always add just a drop of gravy master if you want it darker. Or make a roue, letting the butter brown slightly, then use the drippings and broth to finish the gravy. I've only cooked about 4 turkeys in my 53 years, so maybe someone else can help more. Thanks everyone. Yes, I used an oven thermometer. It's an old one (the standard metal frame) and I have no reason to think it's off, since setting the oven 25 degrees lower seems to work almost all the time.... and NOT setting it lower tends to burn/brown the food too much (though I haven't tried that for a long while....). In addition, I always put the rack in the middle of the oven (unless the recipe says to do otherwise), then put the thermometer in the middle of the rack on which I'll put the pan, and wait until it registers at (or very close to) the temp I want. And, yes, the breast was cold when it went into the oven -- I made the herb paste in the morning, spread it on, covered with foil, and put it in the fridge. I wanted to go for a bike ride and didn't want to cut that short to come back and prepare the turkey; all I'd need to do is stick it in the oven. No doubt, letting it sit at room temp for about an hour would have made a difference in cooking time. I bought it fresh, not frozen, and kept it in the fridge until cooking time. (I removed the foil except for the last 30 minutes.) So, next time I'll let it sit for about an hour at room temp before cooking, then let it reach 165 degrees before removing it from the oven. This was Ina's recipe and tried and true so I'm going on the assumption I did something differently. It wasn't overly dry.... a little on the dry side. The flavor is great and I would definitely make it again, but not for company until I get this right! I also made the dill potatoes (posted here before), and brussel sprouts blanched then tossed w/ EVOO and drizzled with finely chopped walnuts then roasted in the oven. Hubby (who does most of the cooking since he's retired and I am still working) said "This is really good, Hon." .... then, after dinner, "Good job!" Georgysmom, I think I'd be too tempted to keep brining it and drinking the bottle of champagne! I've always tented my turkeys and they turn out fine.

Cut open the bag towards the finish time so it browns. Correct, Champagne is for the cook. The camper left his Turkey in the tent, but nothing happened.

I have used them just be aware it is steaming the bird as well as roasting so it cooks it a little faster and the bird will start to fall apart and then it is not easy to get it out of the bag without a big mess and just about destroying the bird. It tastes fine you just won't usually have a nice pretty whole bird to present. Every time I have used them the wings of course get done first and fall off then the legs get splayed out. You can cut the bag away but it will probably be stuck to the bottom of the bag so have someone helping you.

Not trying to scare you just want you to be prepared.
I cook whole chickens in them all the time and they are wonderful.
You are not able to baste of course. You can raise the breast skin and slide pats of butter under the skin which keeps it moist and somewhat self baste.

You have to cut it up to serve it anyway so it never really mattered to me.
I would also drop pats of butter through the slits you have to make in the bag during cooking.

I know it sounds like a waste, but the turkey turns out so good! I only paid $.47 a pound for the turkey so I can be a little extravagant with the champagne. Maybe next year I'll save a little bit for the cookÃ¢ÂÂ¦.good suggestion from everyone.

it was cooked and in the car going to dd2 house today...wondering if the sack failure is wrong temps or ot putting in the small amount of flour?

It turned out wonderful. I did cut open the bag and put it back in at the end because the skin did not brown enough inside the bag, but everyone loved the turkey, it was so tender and moist.

If DH isn't smoking/grilling our bird it is in a Reynold's bag. Perfect every time. We don't get too worked up about the browning thing. I carve the turkey in the kitchen, not at the table. We removed all the skin before putting it on a platter.

I put my turkey in a bag for the first time this year. It browned beautifully. I was actually surprised, because I thought that it probably would not. It did not fall apart. I'm very happy with the results.

I thought maybe I had used a different brand, but nope, just checked & it was a Reynolds turkey bag--2 bags in a box. I used the tablespoon of flour as directed, shook it around in the bag. Interesting that we have varied reports in regards to the browning.
