Mostly a lurker here, but sure could use some good thoughts

My mom is in a nursing home. She has Alzheimers and this past week has really gone down hill.

She has a urinary tract infection and is so sick. They are giving her antibiotics, but they don't seem to be working.

She has fallen out of her wheel chair three times in a week.

The poor thing has a bad skinned place on her forehead and her fingers are all skinned up and you can tell she is in pain.

If she isn't any better tomorrow my brother is going to ask them to take her to the hospital. To us it looks as if she may have had a stroke because her hand is all drawed up.

Athough I don't post often, I read everyday and know the power of the Kt prayers.

Would you kind people please say a prayer for her. It doesn't look too well for her. I haven't slept in a couple of days and I know the prayers here at the Kt are plentiful and it would mean so much to me.

I was just thinking about statistical data yesterday and how it can be valid, but totally misleading by its interpretation or context. There are far too many assumptions being made in the name of science by accepting somebody else's interpretations without questioning it. What makes people obese? With few exceptions one gets fat by taking in more calories than they are able to burn off. It's pretty dam*ed simple. I think what got me started on it was something my daughter shared with me. She was reading labels at the market on the yogurt containers. Nice healthy food? Sure. But, take a closer look at those new fruit enchanced ones. Look at the FRUCTOSE added, IOW corn sirups. It has even found it's way as an additive in yogurt. Now, you can buy plain yogurt and add your own fresh and wholesome fruit but that takes a little effort. It's in some juices. I found it in cranberry juice cocktail last week. So, the health benefits I would obtain from consuming the juice are negated by also consuming the corn sugars. Please folks, just take the time for one week to read every label on every food you purchase and consume. It's an eye opener. As for soft drinks? I keep some on hand, but to me they are a "treat" to be consumed as such. I would never even consider that they are a necessary part of of anybody's daily diet, least of all a child's. They consist mostly of sugar and contain caffiene. Add to this that they are rarely served in restaurants in normal serving sizes. What ever happend to the eight ounce glass? The typical serving at fast food joints are now a twenty one ounce mug. Once in awhile, this isn't going to make or break a waistline. But consumed on a regular basis, as a nation we are killing our children with it. Please look at the new statistics for type II diabetes. It's now becoming a childhood disease. God help us.

eaglesgarden, your lot sounds almost identical to mine (I think mine might be 55 wide and not quite 150 long, but ... same basic shape/size, house a little closer to the front than the back, but mostly in the middle). Ten years ago when I started my first compost pile, it was just about this time of year (bought the house in June, started a compost pile long before a garden!), so I had the same starting issue of almost no browns but plenty of weeds and scraps I wanted to compost. You're right to think that cardboard and junk mail are great "browns". But I'll confess, I find 'em ugly. I know "ugly" isn't the point - reducing the waste stream, making a great garden amendment, and being fascinated by the process are much more to the point. But for me, I just enjoy turning the pile more when I am not staring at trashy scraps. (Ignore this next advice if you don't share my issues with this!) That first year, I got a bunch of wood chips to start my bin. My city gives them away (getting a whole load from the utilities folks would have been too much for me at that point!). I got enough to fill the bin maybe 1/3 full, and that was enough to use to add my weeds and scraps to all that first summer (until the leaves started falling from the trees). It was a great solution for me - no, the chips didn't break down FAST, but all the rest of the stuff I put in there heated the pile up and broke down well, and the chips meant there were always enough browns to avoid stinkiness. People here tend to (seem to) talk about two main methods of composting - hot "batch" compost where you add everything at once, either layering or mixing, and then don't add anything more until you harvest, and cold slow piles to which one adds gradually. I use an in-between method (even now). I start with a bin full of browns - generally fallen leaves, somewhat shredded by my lawnmower if I've been energetic, unshredded if not. Then, for the next many months, I add to that pile, mostly adding greens (kitchen scraps, weeds, grass clippings from 3 neighbors who prefer to bag). I stir in these greens each time I add them, and often the pile heats up, getting marvelously steamy. At a certain point I decide it is high time that I quit adding to that bin, and move to a different bin (which means I need to harvest the cured compost from that bin to empty it out and begin again). I don't know that these cycles of heating and cooling over and over do anything special for me or the resulting compost. It's just the easiest / most fun way for me. I am too lazy / not organized enough / have too little land to fill a 4x4x3 bin all at once, and I am too curious and meddlesome to leave the pile sit and be a slow cold pile. I guess I'm just trying to say, you can do this in whatever way fits your life; there are nearly as many variations on how-to-do-it as there are folks composting! lcpw

Thank you all for your prayers and good thoughts. She may get out of the Critical Care Unit, and on to a regular floor, if they can find a room for her. They're bringing in a infectious disease doctor too, but the antibiotics seem to be doing the trick. She's on Leviquin (sp) which is one of the most powerful one out there (I think). Also, checking why her immune system is so low. This makes about the 3rd time this winter with pneumonia, for her. She never takes care of herself when shes sick, and lets it go to long. Long story, but she has her 2 grown sons living with her and her husband in a 1 bedroom, (plus a sm. computer room) apt. The oldest is to have hip replacement tomorrow around 1:00. He's been on steroids for a long time, and broke his hip jumping off a pickup at work. Sorry, getting off the topic here. Again, thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. They are so appreciated. To have her fall out of her wheelchair 3 times in 1 week is unthinkable. I'd insist they strap her in if she is in her wheelchair. Poor thing doesn't need any more injuries.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts and prayers.
I am going to see her this afternoon after the dr makes his /her rounds and see what they recommend. They called last night and said her IV had been jerked out and they couldn't get it put back in, so they are going to try and get her to drink something every hour for the next twenty four hours. Personally, I think she should be in the hospital. My brother is coming up again today and he said if things aren't any better he was going to insist they send her to the hospital. We are afraid she may have broken a bone or might be hurt because of the bad skinned place on her head. I will give another update as soon as I get back.

She absolutely should be in the hospital!!!! She's got waaayyyy too much serious stuff going on to keep her there. I used to visit my mom's friend who was in a nursing home (California) and they insisted she go to the hospital when anything happened, which annoyed her but which was best. You might need to make a pest out of yourself, but please try to get her to the hospital, especially since she is in pain. Good luck and please let us know how it's going.

Just got back from the hospital. She was admitted. They started pushing her IV. She was severely dehydrated was anemic to the point they said she may have to have a transfusion.

The Dr. on call ordered lots of tests including a cat scan. She does have a skull fracture and he is going to talk to us about this tomorrow. It doesn't look to promising as of right now. There's more going on that I don't understand, hopefully the Dr. can clear this up for me tomorrow.

I'm sorry to hear your mother has so much going on but glad to know she is receiving good care now. My goodness, that nursing home as something to answer for! I'll say a prayer for your mom, that she responds well to the treatments and is in no pain.

If I can be bossy just one more time, these days it's important to press the docs if you do not understand what's going on. Please don't let them dismiss you and your questions and concerns, as sometimes happens when doctors are busy.

Best wishes that the tests give you some answers for what is going on with your Mom. I would also question the nursing home concerning all these falls from her wheelchair, it seems irresponsible on their part considering what you pay for "good care" each month.

Another update on my mom.The Dr. told us this morning that because of moms age (91) and everything that is going on with her body, that this will happen again and not this time, but the next time he is going to call hospice. She is a little better today , but the are keeping her sedated because she keeps getting agitated and pulling out the IV.
I just want to say thanks again to everyone for their thoughts and prayers
