How do you choose which Dyson to get??

I am going to get a Dyson vacuum and have no clue what to get. I'm leaning towards the DC17 Animal but really dont know all the differences. There are so many. I dont want the "ball".

Which do you have and how did you decide on it?

It used to be the attachments were the only difference.

Why do you not want the ball, Steph? I have an Animal, 17 I think....it was right before the ball technology was released and I wish I had it! I know when I got mine it was pretty basic....animal or not and that was the attachments.

I'm with Melissa on this one. I go for the ones with fatter eyes, even if that means less of them. The reason is that a fat eye will mature faster than a bunch of small eyes, and a fat eye will also send out new eyes and multiply much quicker in the long run. Also, a bunch of smaller single eyes is often the result of the main eye getting damaged and dormant buds sprout sooner than normal. The plant could actually be stressed and will take longer to get back up to speed. Take those fragrant bouquet and stained glass as examples. A fat single eye of either will almost always produce several new babies this summer. The multiples may have been the result of the main eye getting damaged over the winter, so that main eye is gone and the dormant buds that would have grown this summer have begun to grow now. The fat ones will have both sets of eyes in a couple months. Now, with really fast growing plants that just multiply like crazy anyway, sure, go with the one that has the most. And although nobody mentioned it, I'm also not afraid to turn over the pots to check out the root system to help me decide on the best one. Chris

I just bought the yellow DC14 three days ago. It was out of the box assembled and running in about 15 minutes! I had used this model at a house that I clean so I knew what I was getting. My previous vacuum is a Hoover Windtunnel Self-Propelled. I had numerous problems with the belt stretching out and the vacuum becoming very hard to push. Anyhow, I called my DH and said, "can I please buy the Dyson???" I'll tell you what I like and the minuses that I know of: -- extremely easy to push and maneuver on MY carpet (medium plush) -- SIL reports it is harder to push on her frieze. -- sucks up pet hair VERY well -- EASY EASY to empty the cannister (you'll never want a bag again) -- hose attachment has STRONG suction (almost too strong!) -- not at all overly-noisy (quiet compared to my Hoover) -- "normal" as far as heavy (it is not as heavy as my Hoover, but that was self-propelled and they are known for being heavy) Minuses: -- because of their design they do not fit well under the edge of beds and toe-kicks -- you'll have to pull out the hose to get under there -- some people find the using the attachments to be unwieldy -- using the hose takes getting used to Overall, I think it is a great vacuum. I personally am not a fan of cannister vacs. I hate dragging them behind me and they are always bumping into to walls and things.

After spending a year reading all the comments about Dysons (and not really believing all of them), I was able to purchase the new 2008 Dyson Slim (Total Access). I think the only difference between the older and newer versions is the newer one comes with more attachments. My back, hip and legs prevented me from continuing with my Panasonic or Hoover. This vacuum is a joy to use. No pressure from pushing yet the suction is so great on it, that there are small area rugs that it won't even move on because the suction is so strong. It sucks up everything, moves around obstacles easily and the attachments are the best I have used since the old, old electroluxes. There is a slight learning curve so that it doesn't fall over when you are extending the hose, and there is no light on the front of it but if it means having fun while I vacuum, this little machine is worth every penny. Besides, my carpets are looking better and there is less dust in the house. I would recommend this to anyone who can no longer handle the weight of the normal vacuum, but wants the power of a bull. It has been one month now and I am enjoying it more everyday.

How do you decide which windows to get?

Because windows are so expensive and you expect them to be in your home for decades, do a lot of reading and research. I would start with the NFRC website. I learned a lot there. Then I would hang out on this Windows Forum, do searches of old threads and read all you can. I have been "tossing the ball" back and forth. I have seen the demo ones in the store and the ball is all mis-colored (is that a word) or maybe they are just dirty and it looks nasty. Otherwise that is the one I would choose, because it is smaller and seems easier to use. (I hope Steph is hung up on the ball part of it too, so I don't look like such a freak. LOL)

I have two dysons, the ball and the regular one in pink when they were doing the breast cancer ones. I love the ball, the other one not so much. The ball really gets around corners and is easy to manuever, and when you take the handle out to do corners you can really get in close with the ball. The handle on the other one sticks out at an awkward angle and you have to twist and turn to really get in a corner. I think I keep a clean house and I am always shocked at how much my dyson picks up each time I vacuum (either one).

My husband thinks the ball is wierd and will just be something that breaks all the time. I think we'll go somewhere and try them both out so he can see how they work because really, he doesnt know anything about it other than how it looks. He/we need to be educated....

Ohmygosh, I LOVE the ball! I have the purple Animal.

I wrestled with which Dyson to get and debated about getting the ball, and am I ever glad I did.

It is so easy to maneveur - I would never get a fixed vacuum again.

I absolutely love the Turbo attachment - great for vacuuming up cat hair.

I am looking at the Dyson, no animals in the house and all wood and ceramic floors some area rugs, right now I am dragging a heavy "rainbow" canister around that was fine when DH and dogs were here but now am alone it is not needed, I would like attachments.
If I go online looking I get lost looking at all the different models.

I got the original Dyson when it first came out. I HATE it. Then we got the ball Dyson last year, and it is fabulous. It is the easiest vacuum to manuever.

Steph, we went to Sams, and looked.. and saw one for $399

my daughter thought that was pretty steep, but it wasn't a ball one, and that is what she thought she would like.

We went to Sears, and looked there, and tried some out. She really liked the ball model.

We bought it,(yellow ball, don't remember the model number)

It was more expensive, but I wanted her to have one she would like. Besides, I paid for it with money from my inheritance. :)

She vacuumed after we got home. :) Says, she LOVES it.

While she vacuumed I painted Bud's room (Bud like a flower bud, the name she gave the baby, since they don't know yet, what it is, and she doesn't want to know till Bud is born either).

I'm in the wheelchair and chose the dc18 which is the thin one. It's lighter and quite easy to maneuver.

I bought it from the link below. It was at the lowest cost at the time.

I don't have the ball and did not buy the ball because the regular model was quite a bit cheaper. With that being said, I love my Dyson but I think I would like it better with the ball. But for me it still comes down to price since both machines are great as is.
