Baby Girls in China.....

.. I had to do some searches after reading McPeg's post on my Goddess thread. I knew a lot of babies were abandoned, but didn't realize the extent of the mistreatment that went on.

A Nice Adoption Story

I just ordered a used copy from Amazon of The Lost Daughters of China, so I can learn more about this tragic problem. I wish China would make it easier for adoptions... it really is senseless and heartbreaking that these children are being mistreated and are dying when so many couples in the US and abroad would love to give them a home.

How horrible and how inhumane!

Know a family here in town who had three (Teenage and almost teen) children of their own - adopted two little girls from China a few years ago. Their mom said that they "made their family complete".

I couldn't even finish reading some of the articles-too disturbing and unthinkable. My friends are adopting (either from Korea or China) and it's unbelievable the amount of paperwork and TIME involved. We're talking YEARS of waiting from start to finish. Obviously you don't want them giving children to just anyone, but there is such a need and a supply of loving couples here.

The saddest thing I'd ever read was about an orphanage where a journalist visited where none of the children cried. He thought something to the affect of "wow, that's great, they are so well behaved" but he was corrected. The children don't cry anymore because no one will come and help them. They've just given up...

China Girl and China Boy are variously described as slow, moderate, and fast growers, depending on where you look. My experience is that they are fairly slow growers. I planted several 3 years ago, they're all doing very well, but haven't grown much more than a foot, if I recall. I could go out tomorrow and eyeball them, they may be a bit bigger than that. This is the reason that large specimens are expensive to buy, it takes a long time to reach a good size. If you have them planted where they get winter sun and/or wind, you may be losing the foliage due to extreme desiccation. Broadleaf evergreens don't fare well when the sun and wind cause them to lose moisture when the soil is frozen and no water can be taken up by the roots. Whatever is causing your plants to be defoliated, it can't be doing their growth rate any good. If they are in the wrong place, they may never do well there. Last summer was very dry, which also probably didn't help. They need to be watered for the first year or more if there isn't sufficient rain, and you should keep watering right up until the ground freezes.

All evergreen hollies in the midwest are under stress because of out normal climate, hot,dry summers and cold winters, they like neither of these conditions.I have great success with them and the secret is water! Evergreen hollies don't wilt like deciduous plants and most people asume they don't need water, then they drop all their leaves green. I have some very large china girl and boy hollies-about 4'x4' and they are beautiful. I make sure they are watered at least weekly and fertilized 2x per year. May and June, never later than July 15th. The healthier the plants are, the better they can withstand the stress of out midwest climate, and I am much farther north than you are . Almost to Wisconsin!

Thanks everyone! I feel like replacing them right now is a bit "wasteful" since we don't have any other place to put them on the property. So alas, we will have hollies without berries for the near future. We learned our lesson to not just trust a sign near plantings at a nursery

I remember as a child raising money and before that collecting foil to purchase baby girls who would be abandoned. The Holy Childhood maintained orphanages in China to save the baby girls. Rather than throw the babies away, the parents would give their baby girls to the orphanages for the foil balls and later for $5.

That is just heartbreaking....and I didn't even read the articles. I couldn't. I understand that China now has a very big shortage of women for young men to marry.

I am so upset about everything being made in China and the hue and cry about global warming in this country when little if anything is done in China and they are manufacturing everything that used to be made in this country.

Just so you do understand....not all the parents are like this. We have a very good friend (through DH's work) and they have a little girl...she is the light of their eyes!! He did make the comment when he was here that 'most people do not want little girls but we did'.

He sent us pics this spring of a photo shoot! He said that when they have a child's portrait done, it is an all day ordeal! She has about 6 different Chinese heritage costumes! They are just beautiful pics!!! If I remember at noon, I will post one from home.

I've got 2 clients who have both adopted chinese girls. The one family said that their little girls were thrown out into the woods. Chinese girls are not wanted.

When the Olympics were held there, and it came out that the little girl singing was lip-syncing, because the real singer was not deemed "pretty enough" that was so hypocritical. If that were true, why do they treat their little girls so inhumanely? They have no respect for girls, daughters or women in general.

A couple where I work (child care center) have an adopted boy from China. Makes me wonder how THAT happened! He doesn't seem handicapped to me. He's almost 2 now and they've had him since he was 18 months old.
