Double-Duty Function and Singular Style for a California Nursery
Modern and bright, this thoughtfully designed baby's room is ready to welcome a newborn girl and overnight guests
This homeowner called interior designer Lisa Konjicek-Segundo of Olive Juice Designs at the last minute, or rather, the last trimester, to transform a junk room into a nursery. They didn't have time for custom or back orders, so they found everything retail or via online shops with speedy delivery.
The couple already had a 2-year-old son and three bedrooms total; this needed to be a hardworking room that could double as a guest room and grow with the baby as she matured into a young lady.

As there are three doors (closet, balcony and hallway) and two windows, fitting all of the furniture in was a puzzle involving small floor space and tricky wall space. A tall bookshelf from Ikea makes room for books, artwork and mementos.
Konjicek-Segundo wanted to create balance on either side of the balcony door, but there wasn't room between the daybed and the wall for another bookshelf, so she added a large mirror from Ikea. The mirrors, bookshelf, window treatments and daybed add dashes of bright white to the orange, turquoise and gray palette.
She also recommends a flat-weave rug like this one for kids' rooms. "It can take a lot of wear and tear; you can rock on it, pull the trundle out with ease and sit on it to play games," she says.

BEFORE: One of the homeowners' requirements was extra sleeping space for the many overnight guests they were expecting soon after Wren's birth. Konjicek-Segundo had them return this daybed so she could replace it with something more in keeping with the modern style of the crib and changing table.
AFTER: This daybed serves as a place for relaxing, for crashing after a late-night feeding and as a guest bed with a second hidden guest bed trundled underneath. It will also serve as Wren's big-girl bed when she's ready for it in a few years. The reading sconce cleverly tucked above the daybed is a space saver.

The expectant mom loves graphic art, so Konjicek-Segundo snapped a picture of some signs in an airport and had them painted on canvas.
The designer had Roman shades made from the same curtain panels that surround the balcony door, with sparkly orange grosgrain ribbon added. "The trim has just a little bling and adds a feminine touch," she says.
The room did not have the floor space for a glider, but a midcentury modern rocker suits it just fine. The homeowners pop the lightweight West Elm Martini Side Table next to the daybed to serve as a nightstand when they have an overnight guest.
Now the room is ready to work well for this family for many years to come.

The room will grow with Wren; the changing table will transform into a modern dresser, and the daybed will become her bed. The trundle means her room is sleepover ready.
