Big time scare, tonite

Unknown suspicious person, and a call to the sheriff's dept.

After investigation and search, safe and sound, hopefully!

NOTE, IP for those that live alone, like me, keep the IP to call number close by.

Ahhhh,luna...you are making me cry with this post. That is SO SWEET that you are sharing JT with your Mom on her b'day...oh my, and she is such a good sport to go along with the pics and all! Tell her "thank you" and "happy, happy birthday!" It makes me miss my Mom who had to spend a short couple weeks in a very good nursing home...after fighting cancer again for a year (that's been 5 yrs. ago already). JT is lookin' so good!... with all her added "blings"...and the princess frogs are TOO CUTE!!! JT is such a adventureous little thing...she is certainly open to new experiences and acquaintances! Thanks so much, luna, for sharing your Mom & JT with these pics...keep enjoying her visit & lookin' forward to more pics. Jeanne S.

Hey UncleJohn, You seem to know a great deal about botulism. So perhaps you could give me some advice as to what I should do. Okay, many years ago I bought a bottle of hot pepper sesame oil. Two ingredients: toasted sesame oil, red chile pepper. I decided to add a bunch of completely dried out cayenne pepper chiles. I used it for about two years like that. Currently, it's been in a storage locker for the past 3 years (enduring 3 cold winters in NY state). We've got our new house and I took it back out of storage. I'm wondering if the freezing temps has made it go toxic (botulism). Should I just toss it out? I know that adding garlic to your oils can cause botulism...but no garlic was added.

Tim - I have really enjoyed Margaret Laurence's works so far, and do enjoy this Prairie type of writing. I live on the South Plains - wide open spaces, few trees, big sky... Love it. Some call it barren, but I think it's gorgeous and it's tough to leave for big cities sometimes (claustrophobic with all the high buildings and not enough sky)... :-) Finished up a fun read about U.S. women's history called "America's Women" by Gail Collins. Collins is a big wig at the NYT so is a great writer. A nice extra was that she has a great sense of humor which is slipped in every now and then.... Hilarious at times. Now reading something by Madeleine Wickham, a UK writer who wrotes the kind of domestic dramas as Joanna Trollope et al. Nothing mind-blowing, but just a nice read. Plus it keeps referencing all sorts of very English words which I rarely hear here nowadays. (Perhaps they're not said any more in UK, but they bring back memories to me): dotty, stroppy, grotty, ring road, indicate (as in turning signal on car) etc... AND - big news: we had a blizzard yesterday here in Texas and we had a SNOW DAY. Unheard of, and very enjoyable. Most of the snow is gone now though. It was a bit weird: we were in the park on Sunday afternoon in t-shirts (70's); 24 hours, we're in 70 mph winds and snow; 24 hours later, we're back in the 50's and bright sunshine. We only had about 3 inches in snow (which is not bad for here), but Amarillo (just north of us 120 mi) had 19 inches of snow. Wow.... (Again - these totals may not be that impressive to those in the northern states. But it's a lot here and caused city-wide closing of almost everything official yesterday... Yeah! Free day off!)

Yeah! Yes, food safe by the sticker! Problem solved. Pretty, too. The fork means general food, actually, and the wine glass means that it's okay for the things that soak up lead, like wine and honey. Together they mean stop worrying. :) I'm so pleased you found the sticker!! Re oven, you said that they're "serving pieces", and also that at least one absorbed a lot of water. That makes me think they might be terracotta but also could just be clay. The problem is the water. If there's more water in the clay than can get out easily when heated, the dish could crack, or if it's too rapid a heat difference, it could shatter. If you just want to warm it, rather than cook in it, it should be fine. It will have been fired at a much higher temperature just to exist, and it really is the water that's the issue. I had a pottery oven dish that cracked on the first use, so the company sent a replacement. That cracked on the second or third use, and I gave up. And that dish was specifically designed for cooking and I was careful about not causing a thermal shock from changing temperatures too fast. If it were stoneware, it wouldn't soak up so much water with the green beans. I don't think it would if it were terracotta either, but terracotta does darken. Both stoneware and terracotta are fine, unglazed, at baking temperatures. Just don't go right from the oven to cold stone (put it on a rack or trivet). But I fear your dishes might just be clay (pottery), at which point, at least try it with something not too wet if you're going to put them in the oven. Writersblock, people with high lead exposure from tins or cosmetics, or eating paint, showed cognitive deficits. Children are especially vulnerable, which is why it's so important to remove flaking lead paint. It tastes like candy. Painters used to chew on it too. But the epidemiologists and environmental health researchers look at statistical clusters using health, attendance, mandated test scores, employment records, etc., to find where there are deficits and do site investigations to see if there are pollutants that might be correlated with them. The fact is that people will survive if they can--you can cut and serve the air in parts of China, and people are surviving--but they weren't just fine, and things are actually much better now with a bigger population because while there are plenty of noxious particulates still being spewed, they're not as bad. There are some extreme examples of lead poisoning in history, where people actually died, but even with high exposure, they're more likely to go gently mad. Some of the other heavy metals are less obvious. There are therapies that can, at least sometimes, remove them from the body. I saw one report that a kid was diagnosed as autistic who really had heavy metal poisoning. Fine art painters who chew their brushes (like chewing a pencil) end up with heavy metal poisoning. They don't die. But it's not good. The great news is that unless the people who made PM's pretty pottery were lying thieves, we now know that no such thing is going to happen from using her dishes!!!

Glenda, is this something that happened to YOU? Did YOU have to call the sheriff's department? Or did this happen somewhere in your town or county?

Glenda glad you are ok....may I recomend that you get a police scanner and listen to the calls that may impact your home and neighborhood... I like hearing about things going on in my neighborhood and it isn't always comforting either. But that being said, at least you are aware.
Try to get some rest... it is very unsettling.

Don't ever be afraid to call them if something doesn't seem right. You're correct about people living alone, especially women. You'd think a condo with others so close by would be pretty safe.

Glad you are ok, but nothing is safe now days. It even could be a neighbor or friend, or kids of friends because they heard something someone said in a discussion.

I think by now it's obvious that nothing happened to Glenda. This is something that she heard on the news and "reported" it here in such a manner as to lead folks to believe it happened to her. Otherwise, she would have posted in this topic again...

I'm glad that whomever it was that had to call the sheriff is ok, though!

Thanks for asking.
There was a suspicious person that was walking in our parking lot, THEN, he crossed over to my side, as I was sitting out on the porch.

He walked down the steps of the building next to me, hopped over the railing and went towards the woods and behind the building, and then headed back up by the side of my building.

I ran inside and call the sheriff's dept, as neighbor came down, who heard the rustling in the leaves, to see what was up, saw me, and followed the suspicious person, and then he disappeared between two other buildings.

Officer stayed 30 minutes with his flashlight wandering around, but did not find the suspicious person.

Said he will or have someone patrol the area for couple nites just in case.

We've had a homeless person, won't go into details, that has been around here, and always manages to get away when the law enforcement appears.

I was afraid that was him, again, as he fit the description.

I knew he did not belong to the condos next to me, as where he went was a new young college student, who had just moved in and I KNEW he was not there to see her.

He did walk around on her porch, I watched, and didn't bother to go to her door, and then he jumped over the railing.

Area where I live, the officer said, is usually quiet and they rarely get calls for disturbances, etc.

Last nite, it was quiet, and NO SEE.

BTW, my IP is my interpretation of ImPortant for numbers to call for emergencies.

I now take my cell phone outside with me, with my IP number already in, so all I have to do is hit the call button, if needed.
