Big time scare, tonite

Unknown suspicious person, and a call to the sheriff's dept.

After investigation and search, safe and sound, hopefully!

NOTE, IP for those that live alone, like me, keep the IP to call number close by.

6 months in new construction, upstairs wood floors popping sounds

I contacted an inspector and described my situation. He charges a lot and we don't have the money right now, but he gave his best diagnosis through email. He said that the fasteners used for hardwood flooring don't hold well in OSB (surprise surprise), and that because the joist spacing is so wide, there is a lot of deflection causing the fasteners to loosen. The only remedy is to tear up the floors, fix the subfloor by adding thickness, and re-install. Has anyone ever done this? Is it expensive? I've contacted the builder and let him hear a video of my husband and I walking down the hallway and the floors cracking with every step. The builder says it is most likely because of the harsh winter we had, and that the humidity of spring/summer might help the noises calm down. They refuse to fix it. So now what?

What makes 'vinyl safe' paint vinyl safe?
Q

In theory, yes. Technically, no. Difference is SW has done the appropriate testing and established color standards for their color vinyl safe formulas. Interior you can monkey around quite a bit with colorants before you compromise the integrity of the product. Still, it is possible to go too far. Which is one of the reasons I am so dead-set against the notion that formulas can be cut by percentages, etc. But that's another discussion. Exterior - that is no place to mess around. Bad crap can happen if you try to get cute with color. Significant testing is done for light-fastness and UV stuff and a bunch more things I don't understand. I just know it's all important and following the rules to the letter with exterior color specs will keep you outta trouble. So, yeah, SW took out the black. Which means the color is not going to absorb energy like it would if it had black colorant - but that's not all they figured out and calculated and made allowances for. There's more to it than that. Whatever they say are vinyl safe colors and how they say they have to be mixed is the way it has to be. No wiggle room on this one.

Hackwriter- Lowe's was just for design and I ended up buying the glass tile, Roman blind, and overhead light, pretty much nothing else. We had to save money because the total was already WAY out there for us, before a designer. It IS overwhelming. To say I never cried, got angry, or wanted to just forget it all, I'd be lying. But the end result will be worth it. Lynn2006- I can't see your kitchen in person, so take my advice with a grain of salt. If the cabinets are truly banged up and are just horrible, replace them. Or if they're pretty much ok, I'd look into adding some interior organizers (like 2 pull outs per lower cabinet for pots and pans). You have a pretty good layout, given how mine was I would have lived with yours. I love your built-in pantry next to the fridge. I'd remove the scalloped trim over the sink, my designer said that's outdated. I'd DEFINITELY replace your floor, replace counter (maybe extend it to add bar stools), change the sink to undermount, replace the light you hate, repaint the ceiling a fresh coat, replace faucet, do something with the backsplash (Paint or tile), and look into either having the cabinets PROFESSIONALLY painted or re-faced. The reason I say professionally is that we took a solid week to clean the grease off our old cabinets, sand, prime, and paint 2 coats and in 4 years, the paint started to fall and smooch off. It was ugly, though it looks great for a few years! I really LOVE your appliances, don't change a thing there. I love them all and the range is so modern! Unless you're really short on cabinet space and you don't want to replace the cabinets, I'd leave the soffit. If you do decide to gut it all because you live in a very nice area and you're 100% sick of it and sick of the quality, do yourself a favor and look into an independent general contractor, these big box stores are a RIP OFF on labor! Make sure your upper cabinets are the right height from the bottom. There has to be someone you can put the tile boxes while deciding. If you were to do real construction, you need a lot of flex room, we discovered. I am not sure about your tile choice, I need more info. But I love the larger tiles over any smaller ones. Tiling your flooring at an angle towards your table would look nice too. Google your area for granite starting at $39/sq foot or just google the granite places. Then check out a few of their warehouses. I heard somewhere, don't quote me, that the floors and countertop should go together and the cabinet should contrast. But that was some professional person's idea, who knows. Flooring, having wood in the kitchen like I do is nice but you do worry about drips of water. I have gotten used to it and clean up quickly, but do what you think. Lay some tiles and try to live with it for 6 hours. Fill 1/4 of the room and see how you like it. But it'd be a big mistake to do the floor and then realize you want to do the cabinets too. I'd make a firm decision now if I were going to do the whole kitchen or just small fixes like the floor, toe-kick, and counters. Here's a problem with doing the floor first around your existing cabinets and then installing new cabinets. The depth of the cabinets may not line up and you could possibly have exposed subfloor between your new toe-kick and your new floor. You can barely see it, but I noticed the new cabinets expose MORE of my wood floor than the old cabinets. Meaning that if my floors were severely damaged or a different color there, you'd notice. But I'm not an expert, so get people's opinions and I wish you the best! And I really do love your arrangement, you should save BIG $ on not having to move your oven, sink, or dishwasher. BIG $$.

Apple butter... Does this sound safe?
Q

Not sure what to say but all canning instructions, like most recipes, are proportional to ALL the ingredients used. They are either in weights or in measurements of cups, quarts, etc. So yeah the problem is not weighing the apples or measuring them in some way that is relative to the rest of the ingredients. If you don't weigh or measure all ingredients then all the rest is just guess work, just making it up as you go along, and that can be very risky in canning. Whether you use weight or volume is usually determined by the recipe used. So while guess work plays no role in canning, clearly the risk is less when working with acidic foods than with low acid foods. With apples the main concern would be bacteria counts, molds and yeasts rather than botulism, salmonella, etc. and how much risk you are comfortable with taking. Personally I am not tolerant of much risk in my canning efforts since, for the most part, it is unnecessary. But each of us has to determine our own level of comfort. As to when you measure, that too depends on the instructions you are using. Usually it is up front, first thing as it is the first ingredient on the list. x lbs. or x cups of apples for x tbls. or cups of the other ingredients. Where does it say how much acid to add for windfalls, is there a chart or something? No chart because the use of windfalls is not recommended in canning. Given the higher bacterial and mold counts, only cooking for fresh use or freezing is recommended. But the guidelines also recognize that some will use them and that is why they added the acidification guidelines additions I listed above back in the 2006 revisions. They are treated like tomatoes - borderline low-acid. "Add two tablespoons of bottled lemon juice or 1/2 teaspoon of citric acid per quart of tomatoes. For pints, use one tablespoon bottled lemon juice or 1/4 teaspoon citric acid. Acid can be added directly to the jars before filling with product. Add sugar to offset acid taste, if desired. Four tablespoons of a 5 percent acidity vinegar per quart may be used instead of lemon juice or citric acid. However, vinegar may cause undesirable flavor changes." NCHFP Acidifcation Directions http://nchfp.uga.edu/how/can_03/tomato_intro.html#acidification Hope this helps clarify it for you. Dave

Do you mean there was someone trying to get in your home, or hanging about outside your home?

Dear Glenda, are you okay?

Let us know what happened as soon as you can.

Glenda, is this something that happened to YOU? Did YOU have to call the sheriff's department? Or did this happen somewhere in your town or county?

Glenda glad you are ok....may I recomend that you get a police scanner and listen to the calls that may impact your home and neighborhood... I like hearing about things going on in my neighborhood and it isn't always comforting either. But that being said, at least you are aware.
Try to get some rest... it is very unsettling.

Don't ever be afraid to call them if something doesn't seem right. You're correct about people living alone, especially women. You'd think a condo with others so close by would be pretty safe.

I think by now it's obvious that nothing happened to Glenda. This is something that she heard on the news and "reported" it here in such a manner as to lead folks to believe it happened to her. Otherwise, she would have posted in this topic again...

I'm glad that whomever it was that had to call the sheriff is ok, though!

Thanks for asking.
There was a suspicious person that was walking in our parking lot, THEN, he crossed over to my side, as I was sitting out on the porch.

He walked down the steps of the building next to me, hopped over the railing and went towards the woods and behind the building, and then headed back up by the side of my building.

I ran inside and call the sheriff's dept, as neighbor came down, who heard the rustling in the leaves, to see what was up, saw me, and followed the suspicious person, and then he disappeared between two other buildings.

Officer stayed 30 minutes with his flashlight wandering around, but did not find the suspicious person.

Said he will or have someone patrol the area for couple nites just in case.

We've had a homeless person, won't go into details, that has been around here, and always manages to get away when the law enforcement appears.

I was afraid that was him, again, as he fit the description.

I knew he did not belong to the condos next to me, as where he went was a new young college student, who had just moved in and I KNEW he was not there to see her.

He did walk around on her porch, I watched, and didn't bother to go to her door, and then he jumped over the railing.

Area where I live, the officer said, is usually quiet and they rarely get calls for disturbances, etc.

Last nite, it was quiet, and NO SEE.

BTW, my IP is my interpretation of ImPortant for numbers to call for emergencies.
