I use soap and hot water.

Anything that is not bagged and pre-washed I wash with soap and water... including cucumbers and other fruits/veggies which I peel.

I used to use a fruit/vegetable wash, but read recently that plain water is best. I forget where I read it, but this is from the FDA:

All produce should be thoroughly washed before eating. This includes produce grown conventionally or organically at home, or produce that is purchased from a grocery store or farmer's market. Wash fruits and vegetables under running water just before eating, cutting or cooking.

Even if you plan to peel the produce before eating, it is still important to wash it first.

Washing fruits and vegetables with soap or detergent or using commercial produce washes is not recommended.

Since I've had a couple of stem cell transplants nothing goes into my fridge without a good wash with an Amway product called LOC.
It's a multi-purpose cleaner but gentle enough to use as a veggie and fruit wash when diluted.
I've bought a gallon 12 years ago...still have a 1/3 of the gallon left!

My daughter is the one who showed me what a dramatic difference broccoli had with a side by side comparison...her using the LOC, me rinsing with water. Oh my! Hers was a nice bright green, mine that dull greyish green I hadn't noticed until I saw her cleaned stock with my own eyes.

I have no affiliation with Amway, the LOC is the only product I use.

Naw, I just wash with water. Some stuff I scrub, like carrots, and tators, some I just rinse, like grapes.

I rinse some things in warm or hot water only.

There are bottled washes made specifically for this task, but a quick Web search says that you can also mix up your own spray wash: equal parts vinegar and water. The acid helps dissolve the wax frequently applied to produce and gets rid of pesticide residue.

BUT: I would worry that there'd be a vinegar smell or taste to it. And just thinking about using soap makes me gag a bit.

I use plain water. The only exception is cantaloupe. I sometimes use a drop of soap to help lift the dirt from it rough skin.

I was specifically instructed by my transplant team to thoroughly wash fruits and veggies with more than simple water. Even those things like an avocado or melons that I'd slice thru with a knife as the bacteria could be drug right thru the produce.
I can't imagine that if a persons hands were not washed after using the toilet and then came in contact with the produce I'm buying that a simple water rinse would suffice.
But to each their own. It's not as if I'd always used a produce wash prior to my illness :)

I use diluted dish soap to wash fruits and vegetables that aren't peeled. I know about the FDA advise not to do it but I don't care. Watching people handle them with dirty hands after they've wiped their kids nose or just sneezed into theirs, see them dropped/roll across the dirty floor, then there's the stuff we don't see ~ no thanks for the advise, FDA, I'll continue to wash them with soapy water then rinse well.

Nope - but I can totally understand those with health issues taking the extra precautions.

So, is dish soap what people that use soap use? And, why does the FDA advise against using soap? Do they think the soap residue can cause more illness or what?

I only use water but I also wipe very well with a paper towel (almost scrub) and then wash with water again.
