Hawaii

There are two states with fairly constant year around warm temperatures - Hawaii and south and central California.

Hawaii, certainly, and southern California, maybe, but certainly not central California.

I grew up there, in the Central Valley. We certainly had hot, hot summers, and chilly winters.

Washington state is pretty temperate. Gets to below 0 in winter rarely, and in the 90's in summer rarely.

Colorado has crazy weather.....you never know what it's going to be until it is. It could snow one day and be in the 80's the next.

You mean *Western Wa*, Jean? :-) Sometimes I think we in this part of the state forget how things are on the other side of the "Cascade Curtain", where they do have definite weather changes through the year.

Living on the "temperate" side of WA.. I still say least yearly fluctuations..would be Hawaii..

Here on the "big island" of WA: 2012 we had a few winter highs in the mid 30's and some summer highs of low 90's.

Southern CA usually has temps from over 100 in the deserts to below freezing in the mountains. In Lancaster near Los Angeles one year we had temps at 0 or below for 9 days about 15 years ago. Lots of broken pipes etc. Lots of snow in the winter around Big Bear about an hour north of LA so rule out So CA

I live on the beautiful central coast of California....no forced air heat, generally, until November 1st and no forced air heating after mid April.
We have never had air conditioning in the 51 years I have lived in San Luis Obispo county....but have to use fans in October, generally.
It rarely freezes here and our little town has been reported to have the most 70 degree F temperature in the nation.
Perfect growing season for most crops.

C'mon, Marie, Lancaster's out in the Mojave desert for gosh sakes. Few live out there unless they have to (like for Edwards AFB). It's remote and the weather sucks. Yeah, right up the road is Death Valley, enough said. That's not the populated part of SoCal.

Coastal California up to about San Francisco has mild winters and summers. Go inland as little as 20 miles in some places (like San Diego and Monterey) and the temps can go up 30 degrees in the summer. The heat is dry and not sticky as the midwest/south/east. The lightly populated inland areas (as Marie describes) have hot/dry summers and cooler winters with rare snow except in the higher mountains.

Most homes in Hawaii have no heat and many don't have AC if they're located to take advantage of the trade winds.

However, even Hawaii has 'seasons'. December - March can be wet and cool along the northern portions of Kauai, Oahu and Maui. The ocean is rough to the north in winter, too. (Not to mention the rainfall and cool weather in higher elevations.) Big Island of Hawaii has dozens of micro-climates.

Homes at higher elevations have fireplaces and some have heat. More people would have A/C if electricity was less expensive. I'd never stay anywhere it was not an option, and we visit in winter. It's sticky/hot when the Trades die -- and they can be absent for days. Kona winds can spread vog from the volcanoes as far as Kauai; you want to be able to close up against that and run the A/C.

Hawaii is 'a paradise', not THE Paradise. LOL

I think the trick to surviving temperature and weather variations is a well-insulated house. Travelling to another state or province or country is not the answer.

south FL and usually central FL are very consistent but north of Sanford (northern orlando burbs) gets cold... We fluctuate in summer from low 90 to low 80's in winter (in a normal year) all the rain tends to flatten out up's & down's. But include anything 1 hour north of Orlando and it gets downright cold and freezes. We pretty much use the A/C from April to Nov, I will run the A/c almost all year thou because of the excessive sand that blows in w windows open. On heat we average turning it on 2 times a yr at night, many older home down't even have heat. ~ liz

I'm the O.P. and we often chat about what State we would pick to live in if we moved from Canada to the U.S. for retirement. DH often jokes that we'd pick whichever State would be least expensive for heating and cooling our house. I'm originally from Windsor Ont., which is actually south of Detroit Michigan, so the climate in Southern Ontario is similar to some of the States along the same latitude.

picky like today here in the big d we have an high of 40, with rain expected...i'm kind of chilly today...

have lived I so ca and while you don't need the heat as often, the smog can be awful (not as bad as china thank goodness!)

The California coastal locations gets my vote, however, everyone else has found that place too.

The next best is west of the Cascade mountains in Oregon. They do have a winter, but it is not severe compared the rest of the US. There is abundant interesting landscape nearby. The Seattle, Washington area is fair and temperature wise, is mild. but is is wet, humid, and chilly for significant parts of the year. Rust is a problem. Seattle is aiso a seismic zone.

Another choice is the Ashville - Hendersonville, North Carolina area. Hendersonville likely is the better choice for year around. The elevation is high enough to promote night time cooling. That area does have a winter season in January, but is very mild compared to the central section of the US. One caveat: They do experience ice storms on occasion in Janaury. They do not have equipment to clear the roads when Ice happens - everybody stays home for a couple of days and then its business as usual. They are far enough inland to blunt hurricanes that blow in from the Atlantic Ocean. They do get a nice spring season.

Coastal California, if central. Hot summers? Not on your life. Snow? Not on your life. The temperature fluctuates all day long every day, but every day is the exactly same. We didn't even own an air condtioner in our car.

Rob333, I can endorse that. But not every day is the same. In the summer I rarely wear my sweatshirts, in the winter I often wear my sweatshirts. I have one wardrobe for all year. Rarely wear shorts, mainly jeans and slacks. A rare hot spell or an overnight mild freeze is about it.

No AC in the house, heater just went on the other day. Rain only in the winter from about October (still waiting for the first storm) til early May.

Monterey is like heaven. ;-)

Windsor shares the same latitude as Northern California and the French Riviera. Hot and humid in the summer and cold and damp in the winter.

I don't usually put my furnace on until November but gave in last week when the inside of my house dropped to 14.5C. I think it was warmer outside or at least it seemed to be. I shut my furnace off some time in April but we do have some cold days in May.

Winters here sure aren't what they used to be. We get snowstorms and the snow is gone within a few days. I would rather have the snow stay on the ground than have slush all the time. We get much less snow than London or Toronto.

My heating bills aren't outrageous for this drafty house. I pay $73 year round for natural gas using a 45 year old furnace and this year I had a 2 month credit because I paid more for energy than what I used. I use just a wall unit air conditioner and have only used it on really not and humid days. i would rather use fans. This summer we had extremely hot temps and my air conditioner was not working but I had 3 fans going all all times and I took ice packs to bed with me to keep cool. My electric energy usage rarely goes over 250kwh and I pay $101.00 every month year round. Not too bad.

Living close to the river it seems cooler in the summer than elsewhere in Windsor and colder and damp in the winter.

Stay in Canada when you retire and move to BC,where the weather is moderate. My brother and his wife left Windsor and moved to Squamish and they love it there.

I find that starting a conversation with Aloha is a big help. I slow down and think about how that honors the *person* you are addressing. Being greeted with Aloha is also a nice feeling.
