Whatever happened to the rag bag?

When I was growing up, we lived with my Grandmother, a very efficient cook and housekeeper. She kept a cloth "rag bag" in the cellar, over a door knob. Into it went old linens, underwear, just abput any used up frayed fabric item. If Dad was changing the oil on his car, he'd grab something from the rag bag to wipe his hands. If the kitchen plumbing leaked, ditto. Once in a while, a guy in a truck came around collecting old rags, and the bag was emptied and given to him. I don't think there was any money involved. In this day of "green" living, what do we do with our rags? Save and use them, donate them, or just toss and buy more?
