ANTS in the cement planter!
Comments (6)We have what sounds like the same kind of ants in S.Calif.We call them sweet ants(nothing sweet about them imo).Last year they got into one of my pots like that.I read somewhere to make up a solution of dish liquid and water and immerse the plant in it,and to water it with the same solution. So i got a big tub and did just thatI let it sit there for about an hour, then i took it out and drenched it with clean clear water,it took care of the problem for me.Try it and see if it works.Didn't hurt my plant at all. Comments (7)SInce you were all so nice about my initial question, I have a few follow-ups: Gloves: do you use decent ones, rinse and dry them, or use cheap disposables and discard every time? And can they be dried and discarded in the garbage? If you take a solvent out of its container to put in a smaller one, what do you use? Glass and re-use it? How do you dispose of it? I've been using a mix of turp and linseed oil to freshen up some furniture. I put it in a cottage cheese container and now don't know if it's safe to keep it in there. Sorry if these questions seem dumb/basic. I'm super-paranoid about fires because we had a housefire once, and I want to do the right thing in terms of environmental safety....See MoreAdvice for planting two very large cement planters..
Comments (9)I have a concrete planter, it's about 2'x2' and actually retains water quite well, surprisingly. You could make an olla or two, place the top of the olla at soil level then make sure the olla is filled Friday before you leave for the weekend. Also, plant drought tolerant plants. I can share some cuttings with you if you are interested. These olla's are have been placed too tall, they should be level with the soil. I hit solid clay at the bottom of the raised beds. Google 'olla gardening'. You can buy more fancy ones but these are just unglazed clay pots, two pots siliconed together, a stopper in the bottom one's drainage hole, cover the top with something to prevent evaporation. Works GREAT. This tall squiggly plant is pedilanthus macrocarpus and very easy to propagate. This is the one I can send you cuttings of if you like. A large skyscraper office in downtown Phoenix has this plant in two large cement planters at their front entrance. It blooms and hummingbirds love it. HTH. Comments (16)My experience is limited to window boxes, but here is what I have learned: - Plastic liners do help to slow down the rot as well as retain moisture. They will also provide a barrier between the roots and any chemicals in the treated wood (which retard fungle & plant growth in addition to edible concerns). -Angle brackets for supports are definitely recommended if you want it to last longer. Drainage is necessary of course. To reduce the bottom wood exposure to moisture drill a larger hole (1”) than the plastic liner. All wood rots eventually, even teak, so be prepared for periodically mending. I‘ve been toying with the idea of trying fiber cement composit boards (from remnants). - Soil: Potting mix or leaf fro will be much lighter than topsoil. If using top soil add some peat or composted wood chips to lighten and loosen the soil. Mixing in some Soil Moist granules will help a great deal in reducing the frequency you need to water and makes the plants very happy. I’ve heard that baby diapers do the same thing but have never tried it. i Would also add a slow release fertilizer to store bought top soil. The design looks beautiful and ambitious. I would love to have one on my patio. It would get the strawberries away from the slugs, mice, and chipmunks who eat all of mine. Enjoy!...See Morelee1990
