Had Allstate for a couple of yrs. Premiums were going up and had trouble having the agent call me back to explain. I called an independent agent and now have Travelers. Have had no claims, so I can't comment on how they respond. The agent was able to compare several different companies and gave me the best deal for the coverage I asked for. If you're comparing, be sure you have the last list of coverage and cost so you're comparing apples to apples.

We have travelers as well and have done so for a umber of years,we also got them thru an independent agent.No problems ever.

We had Allstate for centuries, and they kept raising the premiums, even though there were no claims. A number of years ago, I sent a letter to all the local insurance companies with an itemization of the levels of insurance desired, and asked for quotes. The best prices for home and auto insurance were with Travelers. The only claim we have had was for towing--I emailed a copy of the bill to the agent and we had a check within 5 days!

I've been with Allstate for 25 years - have no complaints.

If you are eligible (a connection to the military anywhere in your family) USAA has terrific insurance, with one of, if not the highest rating in customer satisfaction. I've had them for 25 years and can't say enough good about them.

Get several quotes, you can use the information from a bill or your insurance card to compare apples to apples.

Try State Farm and Geico, both seem to have good service and good prices. State Farm's agents are internal. All major companies are quite similar, customer service doesn't vary much (based on what I hear from friends and family).

Buying through an Independent agent can sometimes be more expensive because some will want to steer you to the carriers that pay them a higher commission. There's a conflict of interest, what's in your best interest isn't necessarily in their's and you'll be none the wiser about why one is recommended and another one isn't.

Insurance is a commodity like white sugar. So long as you're looking at national/well known companies, one brand isn't necessarily different from another so why pay more. Getting competitive quotes every 3 years or so is a good idea and can save a lot of money.

I have been with Farm Bureau since I moved to Iowa 8 years ago. I have my house and car insured with them. Last year I was annoyed that they backed a political candidate for Congress. I called many insurance companies and got quotes that could not beat Farm Bureau, so I stayed with them. I gave up my AAA membership this year. I had road service with them since 1971. I would like to find an insurance company that has road service as part of the policy.

I have been very pleased with Geico. They have Emergency Road Service, too.

I had Allstate for many, many years - my agent retired and I didn't mesh with the young man who replaced him. I was hit by an uninsured driver while at a stop light one day (she was pulling out of an auto parts store parking lot and drove right into the side of my car) and he had me running all over, doing all his leg work, giving me almost no attention at all with my claim. I didn't appreciate him giving me the adjusters phone number and dumping me :)

I changed house, car, truck to Grange and I've been happy with them.

Have you looked into Amica at all? I hear good things about them. And my mothers premiums for house and car are less than mine, she has State Farm.

I have All State. They were half the price as State Farm and I have been happy with them. Had to file a claim a month or so ago when my catalytic converter was stolen. They handled everything, followed up with me constantly and the whole thing was fixed and paid for within two days.

We had Met insurance and then my husband saw the Geico so he went to their web site and did a comp on all the companies. He switched our two houses and 3 cars over and we saved 1200.00 a year. We tell everyone about them. My daughter finally did it and she saved 700.00 and wish she had listened earlier. If you put all your insurance needs in Geico, like many others, they give you a deal but their deal is much better.

Every state is different, you should check out your states department of insurance website to see which companies write in your state. If you have your home and auto together you will always do better. As for your current policy, this is the one I sell daily, your agent could have just told you going from a multiple car policy to a single car policy is the most expensive one out there. The single remaining car lost the benefit of the 2nd car, it's factored into the household composition and now that premium will increase. I don't mean to be insensitive but if you've recently gone from married to another classification that will also affect the rate. Check to see if they have the preferred package discount - paperless billing, it can add up to 15% discount if your state has it. Not all states have the discount though. If your not happy with your agent, you don't have to stay with them, you can call the general 800 number and request another agent. If you've been with that company for a while you may have things in your policy that you will certainly have to re-establish with a new company. I can tell you more if your interested.

We've had State Farm for everything ever since DH left his job at Allstate -- shortly after we married 49 years ago.

I didn't like the service (lack thereof) when DH was broadsided by a teenager at an intersection in town last year. There was no one available when I called from the ER -- not at our agent's office or in Bloomington. The accident happened around noon on a Saturday. I could *report* the accident but get no feedback until "regular office hours on Monday".

We had better service from the at-fault driver's company, Chubb Group. It served them to be nice to the injured party, but they were much more professional and always returned calls the same day. This issue is still not 'settled', largely due to State Farm fumbles.

I just received our semi-annual bill from State Farm on our (repaired) 2005 Jaguar X-Type with 25K miles. Why it costs $800 a year to insure two Safe Driver and accident-free Seniors is a mystery. We have home, condo, personal articles, and an umbrella policy with them.

We have Progressive. Our rates are great. We also have road side assistance on our vehicles, RV and motorcycle. We've never had a claim, knock on wood, so I can't comment on their customer service/response time.

USAA is the absolute best, if you qualify to be a member...

I'm still with Hartford. They have the highest medpay of any company out there.

We have been with USAA since 1980, they are wonderful. Used to be you had to be in the military but now children and grandchildren of military can get insurance through them.

I had my house insurance with USAA for about 5 years, until they decided to more than double the annual premium. (Yes, you read that right). I shopped around and found a policy with another major company that has better coverage and a lower cost than USAA had previously charged me.

Insurance premiums vary regionally by company, so that the same company that has competitive rates in one area could have outrageous rates in another. That's why getting new quotes every few years is a good idea.
