Hey neighbor! I'm just south of you in NC near Elizabeth City. Anyway, last year was my first year winter sowing. I didn't do many herbs other than basil (I waited on basil like I did the tomatoes and peppers). Oh, I did winter sow chamomile, corriander and I think borage in December with great results. I would think things like chives would be great for wsing. As for the tomatoes and peppers, I waited until mid to late February for those. Our weather here is so odd. One day you are in the 70's and the next night we are down in the high 20's. Because of this fact I waited for the peppers and tomatoes. Also, after peppers and tomatoes germinated, I did bring those jugs in on nights with freezing temps but the jugs went back out the next day. Others with more experience say they ws their tomatoes and peppers in the bitter cold. I just can't bring myself to do that. But hey, I grew ALL my own tomato plants last year even gave some away to friends and neighbors and sold some at our neighborhood yard sale. I had tomatoes out the whazoo all summer. My only "oh no's" last year was alyssum. Had some great plants going but they froze solid and died in that freeze we had mid February '07. Michelle

Whoa, if you get a degree in industrial arts you get to acquire carpentry textbooks along the way?!? Sweet! Kim, I've always enjoyed/appreciated your contributions; given the wisdom of trial and error that was behind them, I see why they stood out. My mom got us a couple of the Reader's Digest fixit books (have to run downstairs, one of them might be the very one you have); I like the way they are encyclopedic and detailed. I know Jane Powell but not the Small Houses books (do you mean The Not So Big stuff by Susanka, or the Small House anthologies from Fine Homebuilding?) Thanks for mentioning books; I think I might start a reference book thread for this forum. Hey Casey, THANKS for taking the bait. And you are NOT a bloody genius, you are an old house DEITY for crying out loud! Would you please start your own show on youtube? Or maybe just a house tour? Even Petch house has youtube videos. Or, do you already have a project blog and everyone knows about it but me? Actually for someone with a degree in historic preservation, I am impressed with how low-key your posts come across; they read more like an old friend who's "been there" and wants to pass along lessons learned along the way, it's really very nice and encouraging. But if you ever want to browbeat me feel free; I would take it as a compliment. To be honest if I post about something I'm thinking of doing to my house, and you don't opine, I figure one of two things is going on: 1) you're not on the forum; or 2) you're politely disapproving. Most of the time I assume it's 2 because you seem to be pretty consistent around here. But I just want to say, and I hope I speak for many, that I love love love your posts, especially when I'm searching on a problem I'm trying to solve and something from you pops up! (PS I finally got around to using that general finishes gel varnish you recommended and it was fantastic, thank you; I will post photos to the woodworking forum sometime before the next census.) Oh, and I love the way you "aged" the color tones in the new pine beadboard in your kitchen; reminds me of the pine in my grandmother's kitchen. When I was really little I used to look at the gleaming pores and think it was the closest wood could get to 24K gold.

The women in the beauty shop photo are wearing NYLONS and little heels! They are reading NEWSPAPERS, not scandal magazines! Everyone is wearing a skirt; no PANTS. I remember a meeting at which one woman said she had hardly slept on her wedding night. (No, no, not what you are thinking!) She wanted to be sure to get up before her husband so she could style her hair. He'd never seen her without her 'do'. She had four children at this point, so I guess he may have seen her hair in its natural state, and worse, by then.

Tonight I am tucking myself in to my warm PJs and throws, and settling onto the sofa to read a book. Nibbling on shrimp and cookies too, with a big pot of tea. I will tune in the livestream service from church at midnight, or, if I can't stay awake, I will watch a replay tomorrow AM. I do miss having a service in the morning as part of our celebration. I went running around early afternoon to pick up some last minute finger foods from Trader Joes and Aldi (I tried to go yesterday afternoon, but the line to get in was wrapped around the building! Today it was short and moved quickly.) I had hoped to find the Lobster Bisque that someone mentioned in another thread, but no luck. It was spitting rain when I left, that was freezing on the windshield, but that turned to a light sleet then snow by the time I got home. Brisk cold wind, too. My DD and her SO are going to come over tomorrow afternoon for ham and the savory bites I got today. I think that I will also make a pot of the pumpkin soup that I made last Christmas - that was a big hit. If I get energetic enough I will also make a small cranberry walnut pie. We will play a game or two, and I am going to activate Disney+ for a month so we can watch "Hamilton" all together. Possibly drive around to see Christmas lights in the snow after dark. And that will be it!

Survivor. Criminal Minds. Revolution. We just got the hopper and 2 joey's from Dish several weeks ago. And we have TV's in different rooms. It's a must, haha.

glad he is gone, surprised about the other one that got the boot to redemption. When will she learn to keep her own mouth shut! As she was complaining about one person not shutting up she was doing the same thing, karma lol.
As the lone male I bet he thought for sure he was gone.
Tina should have gone for the bone head move on the challenge then she wanted to argue with everyone when she got back that she did it right and would not go back and correct it. I think Jeff was very put out by her actions.

You know what really gets me is that at tribal council each time Mrs.Brad looks like she is going out on the town with her sparkly top and spanking clean jeans and white belt and sandals and it looks like she has on makeup. What the heck? Where did she get all that special clothes when the others are in their one or 2 pieces that are filthy? Special treatment?
Jervase is doing better swimming I thought sure this would have drowned him.

I was beyond thrilled at who went home. I'd like to see his wife out soon too. I agree about the make-up, her skin is amazingly flawless. If she's got nothing on, then kudos to her. I did not pay close attention to her the first time she played, so I have no comparison. She sure was decked out for Club Tribal!

Kat dug her own grave last night. Tina lost the challenge for the team and should have left. I am really getting tired of puzzles at every challenge.

It's not Project Runway night. Dang. A week before Halloween, and time to settle on a costume, get materials, etc.? Oh, you just wanted to remind those who watch about Survivor. ok. Y'all have fun with that!

I am soooo glad that cocky jerk Brad is gone. I hope his wife is soon to follow. Talk about fake and plastic from head to foot.

Why the he!! didn't Tina or Laura go home? Are you kidding? And Tina was the snitch. I think there must be something to what the survivor recap guy said a couple weeks ago, that there were secret alliances made between at least some of the return players before they ever left the United States. That's why they don't feel the need to stragetize.

I can't believe they came back and won that challenge. Just goes to show the guys and the little dark haired girl suck at puzzles. I'm sick of puzzles every challenge also.

Kat did cut her own throat. Keep. Your. Mouth. Shut. seems so easy but also seems like no one is capable of doing it, haha.
Don't really like Tyson, he's just seems....hmmmm...slimy and nasty. Don't like Gervase either, although he did do better in the swimming dept. this time.

Can't wait til next wk. Off to read the recap now.

My town gets the local news from the Tampa stations. They did a phone interview with Brad the next day. He said he would love to do Survivor again but not with his wife. Too much worrying about her. He said she is retiring from Survivor now. Not sure if that was to suggest she won or not. They were going to air a live interview with him the next evening but I didn't catch it.

He is in a law firm called Culpepper and Kirkland. Their ad is on all the channels here. Says the same stuff most lawyers do but they add "a little swagger doesn't hurt either." Yuck.

They are big into charity stuff though, as some of the other football players who stayed around are.

I wish they would change up the challenges - too much retrieve the pieces and then put the puzzles together. Bring back some from the first few seasons.
