Thanks Glenda! (don't let Marilyn_C see this!) LOL

Yesterday I received a "Southern" care package from Glenda to help me out with my book meeting this Thursday. The book is "The Help" and takes place in Jackson, Mississippi in the 60s, written from the viewpoint of two black maids and an aspiring author. Very good book.

Anyhow, Glenda sent me all kinds of goodies ...

- Peanuts from the Peanut Depot in Birmingham: Roasted, Salted and Cajun. (I can tell you right now I had to hide them so I wouldn't eat them all before the party)

- Chicken gravy mix

- Biscuit mix

- Grits and cooking instructions

...and a printout of a very cool place called The Mill.

Thank you Glenda for a happy way to begin and otherwise very stressful week.

P.S. what is *really* in that can Glenda? Inquiring minds need to know. :-) ... and what is RC and Moon Pie? Sheesh, I'm such a Yankee. LOL

RC is a soft drink, like a Coke. Moon Pie is like a big cookie with marshmallow in the middle. LOL!

Jodi, The Mill has a special place in my heart. That 's where the biscuits and chicken gravy were made, in the area, Rome, GA.

The Mill is found on Mt Berry school campus, and back in the 50's it was a co-op.

Friends and I went with the mother of a friend, so he could enroll in school there.

She stopped the car by The Mill, and opened a can of SPAM. and we enjoyed spam sandwiches. First time in my life I ever had spam.

Each and every time I indulge in Spam, I think of that day.

I KNEW I shoulda sent you a Moon Pie.

Down here in the south, we don't get a break til late Sept. The trick is to get out there early in the morning. I'm often in my garden by 6:30 or 7 a.m. and work till about 1 or 2 p.m. When you get out early, you acclimate to the temp as it rises. Our actual temps are over 100 during July and August, with a heat index that can be 115. My yard is full sun, so it's HOT and no where to hide. Dusty, I do have the AC going full blast, and boy is it a shock when I come in from outside, especially since my clothes are drenched. That cold air and these wet clothes can sure cool you down fast. Come on over! I have a friend in CA who gets hotter than I do. She works under a sprinkler all day to combat the heat. Have y'all tried that? I'm thinking I might. My clothes get drenched anyway. Kevin, I was thinking about this thread this morning, and I had to kind of laugh - it falls into the "be careful what you wish for" category, lol. My neighbor (not the tree-cutting one, the one on the other side) has a very sunny yard - boy, does he love his lawn! - and I really am very divided on this issue. On one hand, I, like terrene, drool over his sun and imagine the garden beds I would build there, but when I walk from my yard over to his, I can literally feel the temperature rise! His yard is so hot! That where my dilemma comes in. While I would love to be able to grow more sun-lovers, I do so love my shade. My yard (and house) is cooler in the summer, my guests can sit and refresh themselves in my shade gardens, and it just has such a peaceful, refreshing feel to it. I'm almost glad my other neighbor took down the trees, because I don't think I would take the initiative to do so. Unfortunately, the orientation of my yard is such that to have full sun, I'd have to take the trees down in the front/side yard. Of course, these are the beautiful, three- and four-trunked oaks. The scrubby, non-descript oaks are in the back (northeast) and on the north side of the house, so taking those down wouldn't make much difference anyway. I would look at your situation as a chance to plant new stuff! How about a small tree or a large shrub that would throw some shade onto your now-frying garden? My daughter,(40) just this week moved back in, she had left her husband and her teenage daughter over a year ago,which was a shock to everyone,she was having an affair with someone at work, and moved in with him. This of course caused a lot of problems, her daugher was devistated,her husband was a mess... I am close to both of them. It was many months before my daughter and I spoke..I finally told her I had to let go and fogive her, not for her, but for me.However our relationship was also strained. I told her I was concerned for her, as this man has a history of domestic abuse. She called me last week, she needed out of the relationship. is broke and now worried about her job, since he is her superviser. I told her, I had 3 rules...she had to be completly honest with me, NO drinking( this had been an issue with the boyfriend, she joined in) and she needed to seek conseling. So now she is living in our guest room.. But things are looking better, after talking to human resorces, her job is okay.. turns out this guy has a history of relationships with co-workers.She is looking into being switched to another department. And her daughter has been comunicating with her, very causiously, but a start.... So wish us all the best..

Nasty! Glad I watched it though not surprised. Yes, we're germaphobes but better careful than not. My DH, DD and I went recently to High Point, NC for her soccer tournament. Stayed at a very nice Radisson. In our room, we found pubic hair on our sheets the first night and when we returned from the tournament the 2nd day around 4 pm, we found a condom (unused) in our bathroom sitting on the counter. Definitely not ours! Who the heck knows what went on in our room while we were gone. When we told the manager, he smiled and said, "Oh well, come with me...", took us downstairs and proceeded to credit our card $45 dollars for the trouble! Why $45? Did he think we needed the money? We weren't trying to get a discount! He didn't seem surprised. At another hotel last year, our comforter had a small, silver-dollar sized, almost unnoticeable fresh blood stain on it. Almost missed it because of the flower print on the comforter. It was still wet! I make it a point to inspect the room prior to use. This is how I find these things. Yes, I'm sure there's a lot of junk out there on a daily basis that we are exposed to, but if I can avoid some of them then that's better for me and my family. Just because these things are out there or, because as kids we did worse things than this, doesn't mean I have to let my guard down. Also, on airplanes. I had a couple of flight attendants as patients once. They filled me in on all kinds of stuff. From the blankets to the food. The blankets are used by some very dirty travelers who wrap themselves up in them from head to dirty, smelly, shoeless feet. She said they just re-fold the blankets and set them out again. I think the airlines may be doing things differently now. Someone can set me straight if this has changed.

Ahhh, Royal Crown Cola, I know all about RC Cola, my dad used to design billboards for them. I didn't even know it was still around.

Glenda, if I let them all take guesses, I need to be able to give them an answer. Please tell me it's peanut butter or Spam, I don't think I could handle knowing it really is possum.

By the way, I loved thinly sliced Spam smeared with mustard. Too many fat calories for me these days. Haven't had any since my metabolism retired abut ten years ago. LOL

I asked the man that sold it to me, what the contents were, and he didn't know. I would think probably potted meat.

When you do the taste test Jodi be sure and tell us if it tastes like possum! ;)

Back when RC was made with real sugar and came in glass bottles, it was so good!

My husband went with me to the Galveston shelter to pick up some possums. He told the attendant...."So many possums....so few possum recipes!" LOL!!! I swear....I think the guy believed him.

RC Cola back in the day was good.

I've had Moon Pies but was never impressed with them. But then I can't stand Little Debbies either. I'm a Hostess gal.

There are whoopie pies, that are close to Moonpies! Never made one.

I think the roasted peanuts will be enjoyed by the gals, but Jodi, will have some cleaning up to do after they leave :o)

Here, at steak restaurants, we throw the shells on the floor.

Glenda, if they're enjoying the peanuts, they can toss on the living room carpet and even grind them in and I won't care ... we're getting new carpet next week. :-)

I wonder if we have Moon Pies here is So Cal. I'll have to check around. Don't need them for the meeting though as I'm set with desserts.

I ordered a Cherry pie, Pecan pie and of course (you'll understand why if read the book) ... a Chocolate cream pie from Marie Callendars.

I took tomorrow off to get ready for the meeting. I will attempt to make cheese straws. I'm disappointed that I couldn't make them a day or two early so they could set but 10pm is the earliest I've left the office since Sunday. ugh.

If that doesn't work out, I'll be making cute little cucumber and pimento sandwiches. No time or energy to do much more.
