Hi Sue, I'm not pammyfay, but I have the scoop on Smartwool socks.

According to This Site the Smart Wool socks are
Fabric Content:
70% Merino Wool
27% Nylon
3% Elastic

There are lots of socks available with that approximate content, for a lot less money.

THIS is what I buy off of Ebay...not sure if this is the exact seller.
They are Size 9-11 ~ Shoe size 5-10

Socks are 71% Merino Wool, 25% Nylon, and 4% Elastic ...also made in The USA!

The last time I bought some I ordered for myself and a friend and gave some as gifts....72 pair total...the more I bought, the cheaper the shipping got.

Do you do ebay yet? Holler if I can help...lol...remembering the wooden blocks.

I received my socks yesterday. They sure are pretty.

I find they shrink just a tad. I get mine at sierratradingpost.com.

I never put mine in the dryer... and haven't noticed any shrinkage.

Women's socks are usually said to cover shoe sizes 5-9. My daughter bought me some Smart Wool socks at Sam's Club. I like them a lot, but I also like my eBay wool socks. I wish I could find Prima wool socks. Bought them years ago and finally wore them out.

Yup, just a tad bit of shrinkage, but I don't find them too tight after that.

The thing I like about my one pair of SmartWools (so far, just one pair...) is the extra cushioning for the soles.

Chemo: Do the eBay Merinos' have any cushioning? I might have to try a pair even if they don't. Who doesn't want to save a little $$? ! (plus: Merino wool -- mmmm!)

SueVa: I wear a size 9 shoe, so I'm on the high end of the sizing there. But as Alisande says, the 7-9.5 range is traditional with most socks (I have seen some larger than that!).

Maybe you could hit a Target or Kohls and see if they have a thick winter sock in that size range and see how it fits. Try wearing it with heavy sneakers or boots or whatever you might wear outside during winter? See if any extra wool in the toe area bothers you or whether it just crunches up around your toes and makes them toasty warm!

Other Sue, :) the Ultimate eBay shopper! I have checked out both links and found good deals and lots of info. And, No, still not doing eBay. The "wooden blocks" DD will be here this afternoon and she will do the clicking for me. Thanks for the offer; I may want another surprise sometime.

I'm still somewhat concerned about the sizing. I wear Hanes cotton ankle socks and they have that 5-9 on the package, but I find in some packs, they are larger, and I don't wear them. The Merino wool ones describe their fitting method, so I guess that can be depended on.

Pammyfay, yes, some at the above links have the cushions. That is what I want.

Yes, they are quite cushioned. They are so thick/cushioned, that they could make some shoes feel tight.

Sue_va...I've got an extra 'new' pair of the kind I've bought...is it any wonder? Anyway...if you would like to try them, I figure they would be about $5 and that includes shipping. Just lmk and I'll get them headed your way.

Oh...one other thing...on the ones I buy on Ebay, sometimes they come in gray, brown, or navy blue. There is very little difference in them, and I find I have to put them under a good light to see that I am matching up the colors when folding them before they go in the drawer. Going forward I'll just be buying the gray ones as they are the ones most commonly sold.
