Any shopping suggestions for toasty-warm socks?

My tootsies are getting cold already walking the dog.

Any name brands you can recommend?

A friend told me about SmartWool socks. Those also have different levels of cushioning, depending on whether you're just walking the dog or climbing Kilimanjaro, I guess! Kind of pricey but I'm going to stop in at a Dick's sporting goods store to check them out.

(I did post this either last fall or the fall before--somebody told me I was shopping at the wrong places but I still never found anything good!)

SmartWool socks rock! They stay eternally soft in spite of repeated washer and dryer time. I buy the thin ones.

Other than SmartWool, I buy Hue. In fact, I bought 6 new pair of Hue socks today. I am so excited!

You also might want to look into Polartec socks. I know REI has them. I wear them diving under my drysuit and around the house in the winter.

It's cold here burr. We seem to top out no higher than the mid 70's, some days barely making it to 68F, everything is late here too. I feel like I am getting robbed of Summer. I am ready for some heat! I want to feel the sweat and long for a cooling lemonade. I was still picking cherries as of this past weekend, that's how bad it's been. But I am getting ripe peaches already, and one nectarine tree is just about stripped clean, they were yummy. But all this is thanks to a very wind sheltered yard that kicks up the heat a bit.

Plan to knit my first pair of socks. Any advice?

I warn you right now - knitting socks is addictive!! The hardest parts for novices seem to be twofold: taking the heel-turning directions on faith, and picking up gusset stitches without leaving holes. The shaping of heels (after you knit the flap) is usually done with short rows, a novelty for many knitters, but easy to do if you follow directions. Picking up the stitches is simpler if you are working with a fairly light-colored yarn and can see what you are doing. On their sock yarn "Magic Stripes" Lion Brand has a basic sock pattern which is very simple and (in my opinion) very good. As for yarns - a number of sock yarns are machine washable wool with a touch of nylon for strength. KnitPicks has some lovely colors, at reasonable prices. Google "buy sock yarn" - you will be overwhelmed! I would recommend a set of bamboo dps. Bamboo holds the stitches better than metal. Get a set of 5, not 4. And remember that this - and other - bulletin boards has access to experienced sock knitters who are eager to share their experiences and give assistance if you need it! Good luck!

Sheesharee, Yes Raynaulds is something that one has symptoms for all year around. Air conditioning is hard on me, and grocery shopping in the frozen food cooler makes my hands get cold. I sleep on a heated mattress pad year round. If I can't get warm I won't fall asleep. Will sometimes wear slippers (LLBean wicked good are the best!) and my robe under the covers in bed. At a social event I MUST have a couple of bar napkins around my drink or my hand will get really cold. I don't even refrigerate my bottled water, because I don't like to drink it cold. Room temp is better. Last week at the Royals game 7 world series game (whoooo hoooo) most people had on jeans and a t shirt with a sweatshirt for later. I had on wool socks, fry 12 inch cowboy boots, jeans, cami, merino wool thin sweater, T shirt over that to start the game. By the time the game ended, I had on all of that, along with a neck scarf, puffer vest, wind block fleece, knit hat, knit gloves with those hand warmer packets inside. My husband still just had on his jeans, t shirt, and sweatshirt. If this sound like you, then you may have Raynauld's. Interestingly enough, it often runs in families, and also often in people with low heart rate and blood pressure. I just know I have it, and plan ahead as much as I can. I don't buy any fall/winter clothes that are "cute and bare" because I will never wear them.

We have an old Sunbeam Steam Iron that has a great feature: Automatic shut-off. If the iron if left in its flat, working position, a sensor checks for motion and if it detects none for a prescribed time, it shuts off the heater. If the iron is parked in an upended position, the time out period is longer. This feature has given me great comfort becasue I am the worry wart of the family when it comer to fire hazards. Over the past 20 years, I have found that iron left on twice. It only takes once to burn down a house. I believe that the Sunbeam Corporation no longer exists, but, surely this feature can be found in other irons, possibly the same iron made by another manufacturer.

Buy a pair of these. They go over your shoes, weigh nothing, and are super in the worst snows. Best of all, your feet will be toasty warm. They are rated to 0 degrees, and they are very warm even in much colder weather. Trust me, I live just outside of Chicago, and walk my dog every day.

My dh buys all of us new wool socks at Christmas..it's kind of a gag gift but well meant. He gets them in the hunting dept. of any store that carries that stuff.

Any thick wool sock will do though. You just can't beat wool!

Thank goodness. I thought I was the only one that had problems buying socks. You would think socks would be a simple thing!

I always wear black ones, and I am having a heck of a time finding socks to wear with my boots. I am off to look up smartwool socks.

What I love about SmartWool socks is the fact that they are soft, aren't itchy and last forever! Oh, they don't shrink either and you can buy them in your particular shoe size. (Not just 9-11.)

Nordstrom Rack usually carries them but selection is very limited. On a good day, one can find some that work. I had no luck last time.

Yes-please try Blacksocks-it's the site that delivers luxurious Italian made socks to your door by sockcription. The five different styles are made with Pima cotton; and we carry Merino wool socks as well. Your life just got easier: no more sock worries!

A couple of years ago I went to the Christmas Craft Sale and found a pair of wool socks knitted by a local lady. They are thick and warm, but the best part is that they are short legged socks, perfect for my large legs. Sometimes I use them as slippers. Perfect.

Another Smartwool lover here too! I buy the thinner ones but they do have a little cushioning on the bottom. REI usually has them on sale about this time. Last year they were 30% off.I bought some this year at Costco and the brand is K. Bell. They're about $13 for a two pack. Not quite as nice as Smart Wool but good for everyday wear.

Spyder brand. I borrowed (stole) a pair of my DH's and love them! Lots of stretch and super warm. I think they are part of their ski line. Wish I was wearing them right now.

Smartwool - Best Friend socks for cold weather. I also have the Treking sock as well. Purchased them when we visited the Arctic in 2002, and boy did those socks work like a charm in keep my feet nice and warm.

Very good quality, I am 9 years later, still wearing socks that we bought for our trip to one of the coldest places in the world.

Wool is the warmest thing around. I usually find wool socks at my local TJMaxx or Marshalls in the men's section. I have seen the Smartwool there for between $5 - $10 a pair. They are super expensive in the regular retail stores. Since in my house socks have a way of getting lost, I can't see paying a whole lot for them. I buy 3 or 4 pairs at a time, always in the same color/style so it doesn't matter if one takes a walk on its own.

Any shopping suggestions for toasty-warm socks?
