Unbelievable! I had a shower gift stolen by a woman who attended my wedding shower. A cookbook, of all things. She very obviously slipped it into the side of her wheelchair. I saw it, but said nothing. But you can bet if it had been checks and money and gift cards, she would not have gotten away with it.

Good for them for prosecuting. Family!

Nothing suprises meanymore! At a very close family members wedding, his Mom asked ME to tell her where he was staying on his honeymoon.
She asked because she wanted his wedding gift money before they spent it, for her legal expenses for her second divorce. Unreal..
I just said I had no idea where they were.
It sure takes a lot of nerve to put that sort of crud on the joy of a wedding!

Sadly, people who do this sort of thing actually BELIEVE they're entitled to steal. My husband's sister (who misappropriated over a quarter of a mil$ from her mother who had alzheimers? Has NEVER ONCE apologized or acted contrite in any way).

That's such a sad memory for the bride and groom to have of their wedding. They'll never be able to think about that day without this memory smudging the edges of the good ones. Bet the culprit doesn't get any jail time at all--probably just a slap on the wrist, and a very small fine that won't truly make restitution for all she stole.

I can't even imagine..........Just proves that you can't trust everyone.........Most of us are way too trusting.....

Instead of jail, may shunning would be better. No you can't come to my house, party, graduation etc. Just a thought.

I'm sorry for the embarrassment she's caused the family, especially the newlyweds. Hope they don't back down from pressing charges.

This also happened to my youngest son during his wedding...The girls, including the bride, waited in the church's meeting room in the basement, leaving their purses etc. until after the wedding...When they collected their stuff, they all noticed, their purses had been gone through and money for the band had been taken out of the bride's purse....This happened in a church of all places...We never found out who came in and did this....

The very same thing happened at my daughter's wedding,10 years ago. All the envelopes with cards/money was stolen along with money that had been added to a money tree on the table where the gifts were. We never found out who stole them ...It was really embarassing to her because she knew that some people thought she just didn't send them a thank you...

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but to quickly answer Kat.

No jail, unfortunately. They had to return some of the money they took. But when my MIL died, they got a very small portion of the estate, the other siblings all got much more. AND they had to pay our (considerable) legal fees out of their share, because we were fighting for MIL, not for ourselves. They didn't get nearly as much punishment as they deserved, but at least they didn't get totally off scott free, either.

There is a story on KHOU.com right now about an El Paso police officer working off duty security trying to steal a money gift box at a reception. That's great when your hired security is the thief!

I do have to say that if old rules of wedding etiquette were followed these type of things wouldn't happen. I never understood why anyone would bring a gift to a wedding. If the older custom of sending gifts to the bride's home either before or after the wedding was followed then the whole wedding becomes easier for all. No gifts to collect and hold for the couple. No money envelopes lying around to tempt dishonest,greedy people. What is the purpose of bringing a gift to the event? It's not like a child's birthday party where the gifts will be opened in front of guests.

GOSH A RELATIVE..youre Starting to hear alot of odd stories,a man went to cemetary to visit his wife ,he was robbed in the cemetary,another guy was hunting on state game lands and was robbed, took everthing truck & all.

wildchild -- I agree. I never heard of this custom as a young adult. I also never heard of a woman's immediate family hosting a shower (wedding or new baby). Now we have invitatiions, even announcements, ASKING for money!
