wedding money stolen

Last month a friend of our daughters got married. The reception was held in a lodge. They had a white bird cage that you slipped the gift envelopes into. At the end of the night the cage and all the envelopes were gone. The next day the bride sent out a mass text and email to let everyone know what happened and asked everyone that put in a check to please stop the checks. Daughter called me and told me about it and i told her to also tell everyone if they did gift cards to cancel them also. One of the guest went into Walmart to cancel card and was told it had already been used. Walmart manager checked the date it was cashed and said, he would show them the video if the bride and groom would come in and view it to see if it was anyone they recognized. It was the grooms mothers sister( his own aunt) His aunt didn't apologize, instead she ranted and raved about the fact there going to prosecute.

It's bad enough for this to happen but for it to be family. It's difficult enough to get a start in life and with this crap happening,just takes the cake.

OMG! I bet she won't be invited to too many more family functions! Of course, if she's in JAIL, it won't be an issue.

That is so audacious, I can't hardly stand it! Yay for busting the lousy thief AND for pressing charges against her.

Unbelievable! I had a shower gift stolen by a woman who attended my wedding shower. A cookbook, of all things. She very obviously slipped it into the side of her wheelchair. I saw it, but said nothing. But you can bet if it had been checks and money and gift cards, she would not have gotten away with it.

Good for them for prosecuting. Family!

I don't think that snoony post was blaming the housing market on Pres. O. I think rather stating that when the two conditions are met, things will be different. 1) Change in political party. 2) Return of housing market I'm sure we can all agree that satisfying number 2 will change things ;) Farmhousegirl- Sorry you are dealing with red tape. Our land has a lot of erosion issues from nearby properties. We even have about 4 acres under a spillway easement from the neighboring pond....can't put any trees in it ;( And it has a LOT of road frontage we would love to block views from (over 400 feet!)

Yeah, Dilly, I would vote for "elope" too. Victoria, is having a big wedding right now important? You could do a ceremony on your fifth anniversary and repeat your vows. Lots of couples do that. It sounds like you are cutting nearly every corner that you can. There are other ways you can make use of the space that you have in your house, however. Could you rent out "storage space"? Most older houses lose a lot of heat through the roof, because insulation is old or missing completely. You can buy insulation that you can blow into the attic yourself. For the average house, though, it runs about $300 for the insulation. Lowe's will loan you an insulation blower for a deposit. The deposit here is pretty steep, but for that you could put it on your credit card. They will credit it back when you bring the blower back. They have insulation you can buy in rolls to lay in the attic, too. You could maybe get a roll each pay day. Be sure to get the kind for attics and not for walls. They have expandable foam in cans that you can use to seal the space behind mop-boards in every room. You'd be surprised how much cold air comes in there. You might see if you can buy text books used online at places such as Amazon.com. You can also sell them there. You had a credit card payment on your list -- is that from previous spending or is that how you pay for your monthly needs? Nothing wrong with using a credit card for monthly needs as long as you pay the bill in full when you get it each month. But if you're carrying a balance, try to get that paid down just as soon as you can. The interest rate on a credit card is staggering. Some credit card companies will pay cash back -- a small percentage of what you buy. Discover card is one. For prescriptions, talk to the doctor about whether you can have samples. You can also contact the maker of the drug and if you qualify you may be able to get the prescriptions free. Think carefully about whether you should sell your big house. You will lose money on it if you sell now. Moving is expensive. There will be deposits and activation fees. Do you plan to stay in the area you're in now after you're out of school? If so and if you plan to have children, owning a big house will put you ahead of the game then. How about your mortgage? Are you paying high interest? Can you refinance at a lower interest rate? If, on the other hand, you REALLY want to sell, is there anything you can do to make the house more attractive? I'm constantly amazed at how buyers will choose one house over another simply because they like the paint job better, or some other little thing that could be easily changed. How's the curb appeal? Maybe you could rent with an option to buy? You would still have to live someplace, though.... Have you compared auto insurance rates lately? I'm with you texasredhead. Look gardurnit, I'm not rich, sure don't live in a vacuum, and I can pay my bills. Point is that you can't afford insurance or the cost of electrical repairs. You have vague notions of turning the home into income property and you expect people to help you. As you have pointed out, most charitable organizations want to help families. In addition virtually none are going to want to donate time or materials to income property. Strike three is that you don't seem financially capable of pulling this off - you couldn't afford insurance in the first place -- and now you have a bigger problem. Good thing it didn't burn down. You really need to work with someone who you can trust to develop a more realistic plan. That plan would probably involve selling the house and finding housing that is appropriate to your financial situation and physical ability. You might actually get more cooperation on finding an electrician who would work at reduced rates in order to get the house sold than to continue with the rental idea. Check and see if there is a non-profit community development corporation in the area that could help you. You have a lot of interwoven problems/concerns - the wiring isn't the real issue.

How sad; I'm sorry it happened to you. It's good to make a police report and for you to get a copy of it. If nothing else it gives you an official report you can send to creditors, etc. that the theft was documented, where, when, etc. Also, I would ask the pastor to make this theft known in the next Sunday sermon. This lets the rest of the congregation to be more vigilant and, hopefully, make the thief turn in the non-cash contents. Who knows, there may be others just like you who have had items stolen but who have kept silent.

Nothing suprises meanymore! At a very close family members wedding, his Mom asked ME to tell her where he was staying on his honeymoon.
She asked because she wanted his wedding gift money before they spent it, for her legal expenses for her second divorce. Unreal..
I just said I had no idea where they were.
It sure takes a lot of nerve to put that sort of crud on the joy of a wedding!

Sadly, people who do this sort of thing actually BELIEVE they're entitled to steal. My husband's sister (who misappropriated over a quarter of a mil$ from her mother who had alzheimers? Has NEVER ONCE apologized or acted contrite in any way).

That's such a sad memory for the bride and groom to have of their wedding. They'll never be able to think about that day without this memory smudging the edges of the good ones. Bet the culprit doesn't get any jail time at all--probably just a slap on the wrist, and a very small fine that won't truly make restitution for all she stole.

Instead of jail, may shunning would be better. No you can't come to my house, party, graduation etc. Just a thought.

I'm sorry for the embarrassment she's caused the family, especially the newlyweds. Hope they don't back down from pressing charges.

This also happened to my youngest son during his wedding...The girls, including the bride, waited in the church's meeting room in the basement, leaving their purses etc. until after the wedding...When they collected their stuff, they all noticed, their purses had been gone through and money for the band had been taken out of the bride's purse....This happened in a church of all places...We never found out who came in and did this....

The very same thing happened at my daughter's wedding,10 years ago. All the envelopes with cards/money was stolen along with money that had been added to a money tree on the table where the gifts were. We never found out who stole them ...It was really embarassing to her because she knew that some people thought she just didn't send them a thank you...

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but to quickly answer Kat.

No jail, unfortunately. They had to return some of the money they took. But when my MIL died, they got a very small portion of the estate, the other siblings all got much more. AND they had to pay our (considerable) legal fees out of their share, because we were fighting for MIL, not for ourselves. They didn't get nearly as much punishment as they deserved, but at least they didn't get totally off scott free, either.

There is a story on KHOU.com right now about an El Paso police officer working off duty security trying to steal a money gift box at a reception. That's great when your hired security is the thief!

That is so low. I'm glad the witch was caught. She needs to be prosecuted.

I do have to say that if old rules of wedding etiquette were followed these type of things wouldn't happen. I never understood why anyone would bring a gift to a wedding. If the older custom of sending gifts to the bride's home either before or after the wedding was followed then the whole wedding becomes easier for all. No gifts to collect and hold for the couple. No money envelopes lying around to tempt dishonest,greedy people. What is the purpose of bringing a gift to the event? It's not like a child's birthday party where the gifts will be opened in front of guests.

GOSH A RELATIVE..youre Starting to hear alot of odd stories,a man went to cemetary to visit his wife ,he was robbed in the cemetary,another guy was hunting on state game lands and was robbed, took everthing truck & all.

wildchild -- I agree. I never heard of this custom as a young adult. I also never heard of a woman's immediate family hosting a shower (wedding or new baby). Now we have invitatiions, even announcements, ASKING for money!
