Too cool! What are you going to store on it first? How do you obtain the ebooks from the library?

I already got several books on it from Barnes and Noble.
The first 2 I purchased was 19 Minutes by Jodi Picoult and The Death and Life of Charlie St Cloud.

The library has a website that you can download books. When the expiration date is up, the book can no longer be read. So there are no late fees. I haven't tried that yet, but that is what their FAQ page says.

I was just going to start a post about "books" today because yesterday I bought 2 books , and for me this is a big deal, because I have not read one in over 20 years...and one of them is Charlie St Cloud !!!
The other book is Lovely Bones, and I did start reading it, and this is an experiment, if I enjoy reading I am going to get a Kindle too !

I work at my local B&N, and being able to go into the store and ask questions etc, is one of the BEST reasons for choosing a Nook. (I'd tell you a couple more, but I don't want to offend or upset the kindle owners here!)

I really love mine! If you have any questions or need help with anything, just ask...I'd be happy to share what knowledge I have with you, or anyone else.

At the B&N's around here, we all have a 'Nook group' that meets one evening a week (I've had my Nook since the beginning of August, and finally got to go to the meeting this week! I'm usually working the night they meet here). Does your store have a group like that? You can get a lot of questions answered then, and pick up a few 'tips' too.

TIP: If you'd like to search for 'free' e-books...

1. tap your 'shop' button
2. tap 'search' to get to the keyboard
3. tap the '123' key on the keyboard (to get to
   numbers instead of letters)
4. type in '0.00'
5. tap the 'abc' key
6. type in whatever subject you want (ex:
   mystery, sci-fi, or if you just want to
   browse, you can skip this step)
7. tap search

You should get a list of e-books that you can download for free. Yippee! Free is good!

salgal.....If we had a Barns & Noble in town here, I would probably go there today and get one, I would love to be able to actually see one of these devices before I buy one !
Its so helpful, for me, to read everyone's opinions on either of them ! And also to see what everyone is reading !

over in the computer help area many of us have purchased the Pandigital Novel which is also tied to Barnes and Noble bookstore. It is a really awesome device, not only a reader, more of a mini tablet pc, you can go online, email, surf, store and watch videos and music and use it as a digital frame for your photos. I have had mine for several months now and absolutely love it, it also comes pre loaded with some free books and games. It is a color display, I actually prefer it to the e-ink type, when I read at night it has a backlight so no lights are needed and it does have a setting for night reading.
There are 2 threads about it now over on the computer help section as we all learn together.
i got mine at Bed bath and beyond and used one of their 20% off coupons plus they had a rebate also so was just over $100.
I can also use the library books which I look forward to if I ever get down there and get my library card.

walgreens online also has them. I will warn that they have a white and black model the white is by far better.

I have a problem with getting the wi-fi connected. I tried here at home and it didn't work. Customer support told me to possibly try another location as I hadn't used mine in a couple years...I tried at the airport, a hotel and coffee shop. It finds the wi-fi, it just won't connect.
I am probably going to take it back to B&N for help this weekend if I can't figure it out. Any ideas?

it will connect to any wifi wireless network so if you have a wireless router in your home it will connect to it, it also comes with a usb cable so you can connect it directly to your pc if you need to use it to move stuff from the pc to the PDN, it takes a memory card also like the ones used in cameras, you can store a lot of books, pictures, videos etc on the sd card and then insert it into the PDN and use them from the card.(up 32gig size)
It is extremely easy to use. If you do not have wireless at home it will use any wireless hotspots like those at libraries and starbucks etc. it does not use a cell phone type connection like the kindle does.

that post is the 2nd one we started the first one got so long it cut us off but I put a link to that one in this second one.

You may look at youtube for videos and reviews, keep in mind the ones you see may be from the original version that came out which had some problems, they recalled all of them and put out a new version which is the one I have, it is very responsive and I have not had any problems with it. The black model is not near as good as the white one.

Feel free to come over to the computer area and ask any questions, I only pop in here once in awhile but am over there daily.
There have been some recent sales on it at Kohls also.

several people have had success in printing out the walgreens ad and taking it to bed bath and beyond and asking for a price match then also using the bed bath and beyond 20% off coupon which brings it down considerably. I get the coupons in the mail but you can get one by going to their site and signing up, they will email you one.

salgal there are some very good Nook specific forums out there you may want to try one of them, some devices are a bit touchy for wifi and it may just need a bit of tweaking. I have not personally worked with a Nook. When you are trying to connect to the wifi network are you entering the passcode for the network? Most all are set up with protection and require a passcode to be able to access the network.

Have you been able to connect yet? Which Nook do you have, the 3G/WiFi or the WiFi? Do you have 'airplane mode' disabled? You should leave that disabled, unless you're in a restricted area.

Support is right...connections can be spotty! I have the 3G/WiFi Nook, and I can't connect to the WiFi at home and it's all around me!! I don't have WiFi in my house, so I just shut the WiFi down and use the 3G...works fine for me.

Another thing to try...go to 'settings' and make sure you have the latest update...it should say 'software version 1.4.0'. If not, take it to your B&N, turn it on when you get to the store (should probablly even work in the parking lot...mine does!) and it should automatically update itself. If it doesn't download the update, ask a clerk to help you with it.

You said you haven't used your WiFi at home for a couple of years...maybe it's been disabled? Also, sometimes it can take a minute or two longer to connect than expected, I'm not known for having any patience with electronics!!! To me, they should be 'instant on' LOL! And no, you don't need a password/passcode, so that's not the issue.

Hubs and I both have Kindles, and we both love them. One of Hubs' brothers recently got a Nook, and he really likes it. Since we'd never seen a Nook "live and in person" we stopped into a Barnes and Noble store to see one. I'll tell you the one thing I really didn't like was the "spiel" that the salesman gave us. He was pointing out good things about the Nooks and "bad" things about the Kindle. Would have been OK if the stuff he'd said about the Kindle were true, but it wasn't. The one thing that will always keep me from purchasing or recommending a product - any product - is when the salesperson has to rely on lies to make their product "better than" the competition.

The truth of the matter is that the Kindle and the Nook are both great products. Buy whichever one floats your boat. But research both, find out what other owners (not salesfolks) think about whichever one it is that they have, and make up your own mind. Don't rely on what the salespeople say. (An example -- the Barnes and Noble guy told us that you can download books from the Internet onto a Nook, but there is nowhere on the Internet, other than Amazon.com, where you can get e-books for the Kindle. Totally untrue.)

Lindsey, I totally agree about the sales pitch...big turnoff for me. I work in sales...my rule is to never put down the competition...if your best features are the others shortcomings...well, see ya!
The girl I talked to was just the sweetest thing...She never said a bad thing at all about the Kindle. She knew I had done my homework.
Your right...I could not find any significant compelling reason to buy one over the other...I just happened to like buying in the store.
Both Nook and Kindle have 3G out right now as a beta...that kept me from getting that version. It will either get better in the near future, or there will be a monthly plan associated with the 3G (just a hunch). So I decided to stick with Wi-Fi only. I know myself well enough that when I sit down at the computer to browse books, I will probably buy several at one time. And I have a Blackberry and laptop so having the internet on the reader doesn't excite me a whole lot.
I am going to go to the B & N store Saturday to see if someone there can talk me through why am I having trouble with the Wi-Fi function.
