You defintely need to winterized the tree, thickly mulch the root and bury the branches if you want fruits every year. I have Chicago Hardy grow in 5B in ground. The practice here I saw is to bury the branches under at least 12-16" mulch/straw to safely over winter. In 6B , you may not need this thick mulch, but climate changes, who knows this coming winter is milder or colder. You don't want take chances with your investment. Reward is great...It grows much better than in the pot. It has little figs pop up on the branches already.

Toni, I think she meant that she bought a plant, but had she bought a fruit at the grocer it would be $5. I'd say they grow in alkaline soil, because they like the same kind of soil as olives, grapes, and rosemary, well drained sandy soil. For this time of year $5 can be expected for fresh figs. Out of CA or other Medeteranian states figs will be quite pricy, because they don't travel well when ripe and really don't taste as good if not left on the vine (Yes figs are vines) to ripen. They would have to be greenhouse grown if grown in a large enough scale to go to market. That's why most of the time you only see dried figs, which are really good treats in themselves. Given enough light, you should get more fruit eventually, most figs are self fertile and have two crops a year.

A 3 or 4 foot tall conadria fig tree, or any other fig tree, is a real real cheap price. Take care of it and less than a dozen ripe fig will recover the price. Rooting a cuttings or air-layering at home garden takes time and efforts. I am not sure how they can sell one 3 or 4 ft tall fig tree for $5!

Hi Allenwrench You have to do it at least the year you want the figs. I just counted the leaves on each new branch starting from its branching point and cut the rest of the branch after the sixth leaf (per Herman's suggestion). I did something extra after that but I will wait and see if that works and come back to mention it after a few weeks.
