We Might Get A Hard Freeze This Week!

I went out and picked what tomatoes I could find, dug up two ornamental sweet potato vines, picked up a few walnuts and planted a lilac bush and a perennial that had not gotten planted. At least they are in the ground. I may go out later and pick up more walnuts. It is pretty breezy out, but sunny and 56 right now. Izzi enjoyed the ride out on the big rig and would get off and sniff around while I was working and then come running fast when I was ready to go again. I may make some soup later, right now it is just a thought! What are you all doing today and how is your weather?

That reminds me, I should probably go dig some stuff and pick my tomatoes. We are supposed to get down to freezing this week. I'll be out of town so I can't just cover it up.

I planted a butterfly bush this past weekend, a friend dug an extra she had in her garden; was going to transplant some young hollyhocks but thought better of it and will wait until Spring. Suppose to get down to 43 Thursday night. If I feel ambitious today I'll trim English Ivy.

Made and mailed a Halloween card for a friend this morning and just heard the mailman picking it up. I do plan to make a pot of pea soup with smoked sausage today and freeze portions. In fact, I will start that right now.

Same dang thing has happened in Central Kentucky (zone 6b). The April 28th one obliterated my 7yo Fuji blooms (this thing has been a HUGE disappointment.. I think I had two apples last year and one the year before.. it sucks!) and struck down most of the blooms on the equally-aged Mcintosh. I counted 40 McIntosh fruits on this 25ft semi-dwarf and it probably had a thousand right when we dropped to 26. I put sheets on a few limbs and that's where most of the 40 fruits that made it are growing. The tree is too big to cover everything. I also see some small fruits dropping, so who knows what will be left at harvest time. I have two dwarf Goldrush I planted last year. These bloomed after that April freeze and guess what... like 50 apples on one of them and a dozen on the other one and these take up such small real estate! I feel like the Fuji and Mc better be worth it next year or I think they are getting the axe and I am going with purely dwarf versions. My grapes seem diminished by the polar vortexes. I didn't even prune them. They have some die back and are just starting to really start. I don't think I will have a big harvest of these either. My 7yo Montmorency cherry semi-dwarf is yielding MUCH less than normal but maybe I went too excessive pruning it. I might have enough fruit for one pie. Blueberries are producing CRAZILY. And Raspberries the same. I guess it will be a small berry year. I don't understand the cold last night and tonight that is supposed to happen. I pray it stays above freezing (as forecast). This year has been ridiculous with the weather!

Wanda, you are right. Don't you remember last year? It was one of the mildest winters on record -- until the end of February, when we got our "first" and "last" frosts all within a week super late in the year. The garden was already in spring mode. So yes, it's early -- in fact, I think we're close to record lows, but it's not unheard of. Still, I don't think it's worth wrapping citrus and overpampering it. Most Citrus takes some amount of frost without protection, and we've never done anything to protect it. It's more "sub"tropical than tropical. I think all this business with cloudcover, lights, and wrapping them is well intended but totally unnecessary unless we were getting all-time records.

yup, thats a mango seedling treefrog, thanks. Im in the smack center of CA in Fresno. I live in the central valley where we get LONG dry summers (typically above 110 degrees) and cool, short, wet winters (Dec and half of Jan). So far, we've had a couple of frosty mornings, but nothing to hard to protect any plants. There is only a bit of damage to dypsis lutescens, majesty palm, hibiscus and bouganvillea. Temperatures begin to rise quickly begining this first week of January so there is minimal danger for any more damage than what is shown in the pics above.

Hello everyone and thanks for your compliments. I had to bring the plants inside last night. It was 36 degrees when I went to bed and awoke to temps of 30 degrees and a pretty good layer of frost on my windshield this morning. We get decent temperatures for a few days at a time and then a single night of frost. It's been that way for the past month. We even had temps in the eighties one day last week. I need to check the forecast for tonight.....not sure if I can leave the plants out tonight. I'm thinking about taking Friday off from work so I can get a head start on setting things up. It seems too soon for a freeze, but I do remember having snow on the ground on my birthday a few times. It's supposed to be 84 today and our nights have been almost too chilly. Good thing, since our air conditioner went out and the part isn't in yet. Good news, the part's under warranty. Bad news is for the 3 "visits" the labor is over $100 an hour.

I'm waiting for my sis Sara to get here. She spends her summers at her lake house in Indiana and her winters at her condo in Ft. Myers Beach. Poor dear!! :-) I can't wait to see her--it's been a year already.

I love having company. My house gets a good cleaning then. Dinner is simple: ribeye steaks, caprese salad and crusty bread dipped in olive oil with herbs. Dessert is cannolis dipped in chocolate from Publix.

Cold and windy here today; sun is shining and my leaves are all blowing into neighbor's yard. We've had some killing frosts so that is it for this year.

The wind has been blowing for 3 days now. 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Temps at night 40 F with daytime high of 50 to 60. That wind really puts a bite in the weather. Our first freeze can't be far off. This is the month when on the average we see our first snow. It may be just a bit in the air to a trace on the ground. A week ago, the squirrels were burying nuts everywhere. I've got little holes all over my backyard.

Over the past 2 days, the wind has trasfered my neighbor's leaves to my yard. I chopped those this afternoon with the lawnmower (with mulcher blade). Only 1/2 the leaves are down. I can expect another batch.

Here in Southern Oregon it is looking like freezing nights are on the way too. 39 last night and a fantastic 72 today and again tomorrow. (Carpet cleaning day...I am so excited...it has been years since i have had them done due to my inability to get around.....the PLUS to having DD living at home for awhile!) We are tired and will start to fill up the new greenhouse in the next few days. Goodbye to summer, as we also get ourselves ready for our 'snowbird' trip.

If I were a bettin' woman, I would have to say we will see no freeze here in Phoenix. I do miss the seasons though, but not the snow and ice.

I don't know about a freeze but we finally got rain in NE Texas last night Temp dropping to 52 supposed to get down to 42 tonight I love it.
wish it would rain some more
