Growing Tomatoes

Here we go......getting ready to plant next week

I reworked my garden layout a bit this year and spent part of this past weekend working the soil. The photo below is showing part of my gardens and was taken about a week ago.

The seedlings are coming along nicely. The hoophouse certainly makes life easier with managing them.

toffee - Well lettuce is a cool season crop but it does need sunlight, perhaps more than the north side of your house is going to provide. I would say that given you already have your beds there to try it out this year and take notes on how it does. I would also keep notes on how many hours of sunlight it gets in that area during your growing months. As far as your beds go, stick your hand down in to it and see if it feels warm or hot. Perhaps it will be okay to go ahead and plant in to it if it's not really warm or hot. Worse case you could go ahead with your plans and even if it fails you'll know what you face next year. You can use it as a learning experience. I don't know where you live, (you don't say), but in zone (9) you may be able to grow all year. I know I do here in zone (10). Greg Southern Nevada

I really enjoyed it. Was there for a bit on Saturday, but lingered longer Sunday as the weather cooled off. Didn't buy tons of stuff, but was pleased to find some striking coleus to add to my containers at a fraction of McDonald Garden Center's prices. Silly as it sounds, I was so excited with the colors of these coleus because the curtains that frame the windows that look out onto the pots have the same colors in them! That's the kind of thing that makes me SO happy! Also found a fabulous bargain on large Pittosporum & bought 3. I love how they look in NBG's Japanese garden. At Mac's & Atlantic, they are $25.00 & I paid $10.00 for these, which were much larger than the garden center's! I've recently returned to this area, & didn't know this sale was such a big event. There were large crowds both days! I shall return next year! I love NBG. Going there is one of my favorite things to do. My dh & I really have enjoyed our membership...& we got 10% of at the sale!

My intention was to recommend a starting point, not for someone to think it was a black or white thing. If you want to get the detergent dose just right, you need to know something about your water chemistry. I just didn't want lsandler to think we're a bunch of obsessed laundry freaks! OH wait a minute... we are! haha! Let's use my Asko manual's recommendation, and work from there. I have a W6761, which has a 5 kg (11 lb) capacity. I can't find any information on the drum volume, but for argument's sake let's assume the Miele W4842 has at least double the drum size. The Asko manual recommends the following detergent amounts: Soft water: 1 TBS Medium hard water: 1.5 TBS Hard water: 2.5 TBS Presuming that laundry volume, therefore detergent amount, scales linearly with drum volume we are looking at roughly 3 TBS for the Miele W4842. If you have soft water then 2 TBS, and 5 TBS if you have hard water. This is how I formulated my recommendation, and I still think it's a good starting point. Miele dishwashers digitally measure the hardness of the water they use, I wonder why they didn't include that technology in the W4842 washing machine. It would have been a great addition. I think it's silly to blindly follow the detergent manufacturer's recommendation. How can they know how big your machine is, or how much water your particular machine uses? If I followed the recommendation on the detergent box, I would have suds all over the floor. What size of washer did these manufacturers use when they formulated their recommendations? Don't you think it's peculiar that regular Tide, which is designed for top loaders that use 40 gallons or more of water per load, has the same size scoop and the same dosage instructions as Tide HE which is to be used in front load machines that use 80% less water? I'd love to hear your experience with the W4842. I'm toying with the idea of getting this same machine myself, I'm starting to outgrow my Asko.

kaylaurus - I really didn't hate the look of the cabinets, the floor, and I didn't even mind the laminate (except where it was missing). As I looked at the progress on the cabinets today, there are areas that are really just a small swap and some that are a large swap. I worried that DH was picking cabinets that were too similar to the old ones when he was looking at a particular shade of maple. But honestly, the natural cherry is far closer to them than that maple would have been. And that's okay, because, I too, liked the wood. It was just SO. DARK. The only kitchen light you can't see in those before pics is another of those anemic squares. Why we didn't re-do the lighting years ago is still a mystery to me. And it was SO non-functional/wasteful. The U inside the peninsula area wasn't bad, but beyond the peninsula was a wasteland of junk. Always. There were too many reasons for it NOT to be. A cleaned off deck/patio/porch sounds great. I definitely should have done that so we'd have had it to use when we were living with all the cabinets in the living room. Terri - when you said 'a quick roll-over' I thought lint roller...which is what it would mean at my house. :) Obviously, something much more lasting than de-dog-hairing. TG - Awesome to hear about the laminate work. I had a roommate once who built an awesome desk. I always thought...I could do that! But I have never come close after that. Installer left a little while ago. He. was. awesome. I'm very impressed. And in the 'stuff I got done' part of things, besides switching the W/D (still haven't cancelled the ASKO, playing phone tag with that salesman) I also ordered my UCL from Environmental Lighting. It'll ship Monday, I'll have it Tuesday. I also talked to my granite guy (early enough in the day I thought we'd template Tues or Wed, but I texted him later and said it could be as early as Mon (hopefully he can do it Mon). And I talked to the guy I ordered the fridge, range, and vent hood from and talked about what I should look for spec wise from these guys (since I've had to watch them on some things) and asked about who does what part of the hood/venting/roof cutting. When we had our roof done in the spring, the roofer said to just let him know when we were getting the new kitchen and he'd come cut the roof so he knows it was done right, but I'll have to ask him if his guys do the ducting too. Those are some nice looking transplants you have. Mine are a little more leggy, but then again I don't have a hoophouse.
I'm going to put a couple in the ground this Sunday and put the rest in in a couple weeks. This will be my second year growing. I'll plant 14, probably each one a different type. I have over 30 plants so I guess I'll be giving some away.

Maybe this will be the year I get deluged with tomatoes! I've got a digital camera now, so I'll post some pics this year.

Jay--Your website is coming along nicely, I checked it the other day.

Nice looking plants! Mine are about half that size - they grew so fast! Too fast.

What are your night temps? We're getting 70 today but night time dips to low 40's. So it really is too early to plant outside, but I have started to harden them off.

Hello everyone and thanks for your compliments.

I had to bring the plants inside last night. It was 36 degrees when I went to bed and awoke to temps of 30 degrees and a pretty good layer of frost on my windshield this morning. We get decent temperatures for a few days at a time and then a single night of frost. It's been that way for the past month. We even had temps in the eighties one day last week. I need to check the forecast for tonight.....not sure if I can leave the plants out tonight.

I'm thinking about taking Friday off from work so I can get a head start on setting things up. Still have too much to do before planting.

Glad to see you back. You have beautiful plants. I can believe you have a full time job and take care 2.3 acres of plants. I am sure you have already checked the weather. We won't be able to plant till this Sunday. Both Saturday and Friday have very cold nights. Will you post weekly progress again? What soil did you use to start the seeds? How big is your big zac now?

Hi,

I've got over 2 acres but I use quite a bit less land to grow tomatoes. The weather has been difficult lately. It was actually snowing where I live early this morning. It wasn't accumulating but quite a sight to see in this area.

I plan on posted progress reports as the season unfolds. This weekend will be a tough one and I've got so much that has to get done.

I use Jiffy mix to start seed and then when I pot up I use Miracle Grow Potting soil. I pulled Big Zac during late December I think. I had several very large fruits but I lost them prematurely to a hard freeze.
