'Garbage' & 'Recycling'

Does your municipality pick up your garbage and your recycling? Curb? Back door? How often? Part of your taxes or separate charge? (Ours is part of city taxes.) Do you separate recycling items? (We don't.)

We were just issued an enormous wheeled cart for curbside recycling. It must be five feet tall. It's so big that we're only putting it out alternate weeks. We could go longer but it would be too heavy to push! The truck is a one-man operation. The driver gets out, positions the cart, and the truck mechanism lifts and dumps. Previously we had a rectangular plastic 'bucket' that DH hauled to the curb on a toy wagon. The truck driver would have to lift these.

We have very little true 'garbage' since the advent of recycling. A week's worth fits in two tall kitchen waste container plastic bags. (Might be even less if I had a disposal.) In very cold weather we put garbage out alternate weeks too.

Our city has twice-a-week back-door pickup. I think that's a big waste of city funds. Let people who need twice-a-week pickup pay for the second pickup, and skip the back-door service unless need is claimed. (We bring our garbage pail to the curb along with the recycling.) I'm sure these services were considered necessary for sanitary and aesthetic reasons at one time, but now there's little garbage, and the recycling is visible at the curb anyway.
