Day 3 - Box Challenge (charity, recycle or garbage)
Comments (12)Here's a kick for you, Jannie. Trouble is ... I need a kick, myself ... so I guess I'll either have to wait for someone else to favour me with one ... or do it myself - later, in sequence: can't have both feet off of the ground at once (unless one is really fast on the draw). I started going through some small boxes in which I've accumulated stuff, about 3.5 x 10 inches, in which I sort mail, keep charitable receipts (for income tax time), mail that needs an early reply, stuff from family, Christmas cards, etc. It wouldn't be fair to count one of them as a "box" - it'll have to be at least a half dozen (a dozen?)! I found a bonus ... last week as I was going through some investment and stock stuff, updating them, I found one where I hadn't recorded a split, giving me double the number of shares, at half the price, each ... so that value is double what I've been updating recently. And another where there'd been a takeover, and I'd removed the company that was swallowed up ... but hadn't added the one that ate it. Think those pieces of good fortune will be enough to motivate me to keep working at the clutter? It should, don't you think? As I'm far from home, at the library, and to be here for while, then get supper when I get home, there'll not be a lot of time left ... if I'm to get my beauty sleep (which has been neglected for the last couple of nights). Just took a pill that I couldn't take near when dealing with food or drink ... and had to be careful, when bending over the drinking fountain, not to lose the pill ... one needs to bend the knees ... or pull in the water through pursed lips, sort of like the reverse of whistling. Librarian says that she's worked here for years - been there, done that! Actually ... I dealt with some clutter in the garage, for I'd left one car door slightly ajar yesterday, after picking up a box, resulting in a flat battery: only a dim light when I opened the car door. So ... I hooked up the charger, and hung a spade, cultivator and rake from the gardening days, that I've tripped over a time or two since, up on a nail. Plus a snow shovel and pusher. But that was re-arranging: not disposing of anything. After five minutes of charging ... when I moved the charger to "Boost" ... the engine started (if reluctantly). When visibility was a bit low the other day I'd left the lights on when going to church and needed a boost to be operational. Wonder whether, had the sermon been a bit shorter, it might have started? More likely ... it was the talking over the coffee that did the job. ole joyful...See Moreblind corner pull-out trash and recycling
Comments (19)I wish I'd seen those before we built. Merillat didn't have that option but we could have installed it ourselves. We have the double trash pullout for recyclables, but I forgot that CT has bottle deposit so instead of newspapers one gets used for soda cans. Trash is under the sink. But I may change out the 18" double trash pullout to pullout drawers and replace the LS in the corner with a 3-4 bin trash/recycle when we get new countertops in a few years! Does anybody know if you have to pull the countertop off to get these in, or is there a telescoping rod with a cotter pin that can just be pulled out? Also, the inside of my corner cabinet is curved - is that a problem for the bins?...See MoreTrash/garbage pull-out door mounted or not?
Comments (38)Chefkev, isn't the door mount a wonderful thing? :) It looks great, I am glad it is working out so well for you. Anita, My pullout is floor mounted, and I do think most if not all can have a door mount kit added. The door mount just provides a convenient way of pulling out a side or floor mounted unit. By the way, for those who think they can't fit a pullout under the sink, the double trash pullouts with a floor rather than side mount can actually work more easily in some space challenged sink bases than the single trash pullouts. The reason is that the GD and plumbing take up room, and most single pullouts turn the trash can so it has to go deeper into the sink base and there is often not enough room in a smaller sink base without the trash can hitting on the GD or plumbing, and preventing it from closing fully. The double pullouts turn the trash so that they can fit one behind the other. By purchasing one of those, you can remove the second can and slide the back of the pullout UNDER the GD and plumbing, and the front trash can is at the front of the cabinet and in front of the GD and plumbing. By getting a smaller double, you should be able to find one that will fit within most door openings as well. The biggest problem is that the needed measurements are not usually provided by the manufacturer for that type of installation so a small risk may need to be taken. Measuring from the lowest part of the plumbing/GD to the floor of the sink cabinet will tell you how much space you have to slide the back of the pullout into. Asking people here who have different pullouts to measure how high that part of the pullout is will tell you if a particular model will work, or anyone could call someone who sells it and has it in hand and ask if they will obtain the needed measurements for them. Just a tip for those with small kitchens who would like to try to fit in a couple of the conveniences that the big kitchen crowd get to play with. :) I hope you don't mind my using your thread to share it, chefkev. Comments (14)@mcarroll16, the butler space needs some work for sure. Our initial plan was to have some sort of butler space for food storage, smoothie prep (my husband goes through a 10 minute process of making smoothies most mornings and it involves a lot of chopping/prepping), extra appliance space that we don't want on our main counter (i.e., Vitamix, Stand Mixer, Toaster, and a space to get a lot of dirty dishes out of the way, say when we are hosting. It was never meant to be our primary clean up space. However, as you can see, we now have a completely separate walk-in pantry, so really the Butler "hall" doesn't seem to have the best purpose. You are right in that it overlaps with other areas as a prep space and dishwashing space (I guess also serving as a "left out appliance home"). The "dishwashing counter" you see in one of these plans was just a suggestion by another poster, simply to get the dishwasher out of the island and allow for more prep drawers in the island. Also to have a space that would eliminate dirty dishes from the island. One thought...We are not opposed to eliminating my office, combining the Roman office space with Michelle office space and making that one large walk-in pantry/butler area. If we do this, Roman's office would then be shifted to the current pantry area. Sometimes it seems silly to have a completely separate prep area just for smoothie drinks, but the idea sounds kind of nice to us because we can then leave the Vitamix out of sight, along with the other appliances we use regularly, but don't want out. Any further thoughts would be helpful......See MoreBalTra
