Nervy phone call

It's just after 9 am. I just got a phone call from some woman. She asked for my husband by his first name, I said he's busy, can I take a message? (He's sleeping, but the poor guy has Multiple Sclerosis and I hate to disturb him this early.) She then asked who I was, I said "his wife." Then she said, can you verify his Social Security Number? I said "No, if you tell me the number, I'll tell you if you are right." I then asked "What's this about? I'll give him the message". The woman hung up !!! ow I'm so nervous she'll call back. I do have a number for the phone company to report harassment calls, think I'll dial it.

A scammer wanting your social security number. You did right to hang up, perhaps report it to your local law enforcement to make them aware of what calls other people may get and to warn the community.

Schoolhouse, the OP says that the woman hung up on her, not the other way around.

This was totally a scam. Don't EVER give your social or banking numbers to anyone!

I've not blocked any numbers and I get very few robo calls at home. I used to get them at work, and even there I did not answer if I did not recognize the phone number. Where I live the main area code is 310, but my number has the overlay area code 424. I don't know anyone else who has a 424 number, and so if I get a call that begins with 424, I can be pretty sure it is a robo call. My doctors numbers all have the 310 area code, and frequently when the doctor's office calls, only the number and no name shows up. I will answer 310 calls that I do not recognize for this reason, but I try to put them in my contacts list for future reference. I wish the doctor's offices would put a name in their caller ID. Most robo calls that I get do not leave a message, but if they do, it is usually in Chinese.

Marilyn, Garth and I were infatuated with each other at such a young age, that I think it was all about romance and we never truly developed a lasting friendship. Side story: I was a thin young thing. Before leaving for his junior prom, his father took photos of us. Sometimes photos reveal things we don't always see on our own. On Valentine's Day, Garth brought the photos to share with me. He said I looked pregnant in one photo. He and I had not been intimate and I was highly offended by the insinuation that I might have been intimate with another boy and broke up with him on the spot! Not long after that some of the girls in my gym class started asking if I was pregnant! My gym teacher took me into her office and gently asked me some questions. I told her I couldn't be pregnant, as I had not been intimate with any boy. She suggested that my mother should take me to a doctor for a checkup, which she did. After an exam and some tests, the doc determined that I had a fluid filled cyst attached to one of my ovaries, about the size of a grapefruit. Doc said there was no rush, but scheduled surgery for about a month later. The cyst kept growing and Mom took me back to the doctor and surgery was moved up. When Cyst and ovary were removed, the thing weighed nearly 8 pounds! My brother John ran into Garth at the shop he was working at and told him the cyst story. Garth came to visit me and I was rude to him because I was still hurt by the comment he had made. A few months later Garth began making weekly visits to my house. I always said something like, "You're here again?". He'd say, "I didn't come to see you. I came to see your mother." Sometimes I'd stay and sometimes I'd leave the house. He was sneaky. He made my mother love him. I had moved on and had a boyfriend. Garth stopped visiting about a year later. My boyfriend and I broke up. John ran into Garth and gave him that info. Garth started his weekly visits to my mom again, then finally, I thought he'd given up. Garth showed up a few months later to say goodbye. He'd become engaged. He had to go to a butcher shop and pick up something for his mother and asked if I would come along with him. That day we finally had the talk we should have had so long ago. I told him how he hurt my feelings and he apologized. That wasn't his intention, he was just making an observation. We both felt that we had finally made peace with each other. Two weeks later he came to see me again. We talked for a while and when he said goodbye, he leaned in to kiss me. I pulled back, reminded him that he was engaged, and he replied that he broke up with her because he still loved me. Boom! That really was my heart thudding. And the rest is history.

I have an Android phone but among the users of my family plan are both those and iPhones. Everyone has a gmail email account and everyone's image appears with calls. As do images from many other people I know who call me. If you use Google's Contact and Calendar services to sync with your iPhone, you can take advantage of the feature "Set Profile photo" or "Set Contact photo". By choosing a photo from your PC or phone for one's account setting, I believe that causes people you call to see that image when you call them. The image also appears for text messages. Also with emails, whether or not the phone originates the email message. I think what happens is the Google system associates the other person's image with their entry in your contact file and so shows it. But maybe not, it may work the other way around.

Jannie,, do not appologize for not waking hubby to receive a call at 9pm. At my house if anyone calls after 9pm I pick up the phone and say "please state the nature of your emergency?". If they reply anything other than a bona fide emergency I simply hang up.

I don't answer the phone at all after 9 but let my voice mail screen calls. It saves me from these kind of annoying scams or solicitations. No legitimate financial institution will EVER ask for your SS number or account numbers or other personal information over the phone: NEVER give these things out! So many people are taken in.

Can anyone here read? She got the call at 9 AM.

I agree this was a scam. Guess she hung up because she could see she couldn't get the number from you.

On my phone if I dial star 69 right away after someone calls like that it will tell me the telephone number of who called.

if you can use the star 69 feature have a pad and pencil ready to take down the number they give you
Then you can do a google with that number and a lot of times it will take you to sites that frequently place calls like that

My phone has a feature where I can see who called after I hung up.

That was bad. Don't even talk to people who start asking questions before you know who they are. Don't tell them one thing.

I agree with Pammyfay, I would NOT confirm the number even if they called it out. I would just hang up, definitely a scammer.

I just hang up on those people. Actually, I got rid of my home phone. Best thing I ever did but I totally understand why some people need their home phones. I never get these calls on my cell phone - yet. Hope I never do.

Take a deep breath Jannie, nothing to fear. You handled it perfectly. I doubt they'll call back. It's was a phishing scheme to get info. You showed the caller you're too smart to be caught and they were frustrated, which is why they hung up. Good for you!

Pat yourself on the back and have a relaxing beverage. Scammers are out there.

Don't JUST be wary of confirming personal information over the phone....don't do it, period. Unless a phone transaction has been instigated by you, you should never, ever give or confirm personal information of any kind.

That wasn't harrassment, that was a scammer!! She was trying to get his social security number. I hope you have caller ID and took down the phone number. This should be reported to the police as soon as possible.
