I am miserable

It started earlier in the week with a couple sore spots in my mouth, under my dentures. Now it is most of the top of my mouth with the soreness going into the back of my throat and in my nose. I've been rinsing with H. Proxide and salt water, and going without my dentures most of the time, but it is really sore. I have an APPT with a DR, a specialist on another matter today, and my reg. Dr isn't in on Fridays, so will call to get in Monday, if it isn't better by Monday. To top it off. I have a cold sore developing on my bottom lip. I don't know if that is related to whats happening inside my mouth. I have to put my dentures in to eat or drink because food and drinking, except water stings. Any one out there ever have trouble like this?

Oh, dear. I'm sorry you're so miserable, Dot. It sounds awful. I sure hope you say something to the Dr. you're seeing today. Even though he's a specialist in another field, perhaps there is something he can suggest that will give you relief. The only thing I know of for sores in the mouth is Anbesol.

Can't you call your Dr anyway? They usually have an answering service-or maybe the dentist???? If you don't so something, you may be in agony over the weekend.

Okay, so she says you are the one with the problem. Whether or not you agree and whether or not it is true, it does not dismiss the proposal to get counseling, yet you seem to allow her remark to dismiss your suggestion. I understand you resent her saying that. Nevertheless, what happened to the counseling suggestion? Tell her since you have the problem and in need of help, would she please participate also to ensure you receive the help she feels you need. What I think is your wife is resentful, and she probably has good reason. I think you need to stop comparing yourself and all the wonderful things you do to her and her reactions to the same or similar sets of criteria. None of it is the same. You are not her and will probably never understand. She likely doesn't understand either and also does not recognize her feelings of resentment. An example is you saying you enjoyed watching your son that day. My response is so what. You don't have the daily buildup, and the baby does not respond to you or act the same with you as s/he does with her. I have a son who as a toddler would not allow me to work (I worked at home at that time). I could do anything around the house, and he would busy himself. I could sit in the family room for hours watching television, and he would busy himself. I could sit at the dining room table reading a magazine or balancing my checkbook or whatever, and he would busy himself. But he absolutely would not allow me to sit at my desk in front of the computer. From the moment I walked into the office room, he demanded my attention from that point on.....until I left out of that room. So I couldn't get any work done, and I was very resentful because work had to get done. My son never did this to my husband. He was accustomed to daddy being away all day. My husband was also helpful after he got home, but it was too late to help me through my day, and it was too late to reverse the frustration. My point is, you don't know what your wife goes through. You babysitting your child is not the same. She needs to recognize it isn't necessary to take everything out on you, and you are not the cause of her frustration. You need to stop responding to her the way you do. You acknowledge things are done or said out of anger, so how can claim to be so miserable when you know you are contributing to the problem. Find a way to get yourself and your wife into counseling. You need therapy with a step-by-step plan for you both to work through, not someone to sit and talk to every visit. That cannot accomplish anything except you both having your bit_ _ing sessions. Six months later you will still have the problems and will still be attending your bit_ _ing sessions.

Here's an update-I was able to sleep last night-not the whole time through, but no gasping for air in the middle of the night!! Felt good, even though I had to get up early for a doc appt. Now if I could somehow cut off the left side of my face (sinus pain) I'd feel great!! lol How do boxers survive getting punched in the face so much??? Audrey-that's a good idea! Yesterday I had to get my mom and DH call my primary doc and OB to tell them what the ENT had prescribed and make sure everyone knew everything-and thought it was safe. What a pain!

what do you mean it's not sf related? haha it sounds exactly like so many of the complaints of adult stepkids moving in and having no boundaries or taking no responsibility, leaving a mess, etc. etc. Maybe those are not sf related either, maybe they are just 'lazy people that manipulate anyone they can to get what they want' issues. I think you are enabling her and when you try to put your foot down or force her to take responsibility, she lays guilt on you... manipulative! Some people will never learn how to swim unless they are tossed into the river to sink or swim. That probably sounds harsh but sometimes it's true. In my opinion, the difference between helping and enabling is when you are helping someone, they are doing for themselves the best they can and you are supportive of them.. filling in any shortfall (helping), etc. Enabling is when you do more for them than they do for themselves and they usually expect you to do more so they can do less. Well, that's just my take on it. There is nothing for you to feel guilty over. You can't sacrifice your own sanity to clean up her mess. If you don't stand up for yourself, then it becomes acceptable for her to treat you that way.

Honey, please look very strongly at this man. I too was in the same boat several years ago. Re married, step children both sides. I had a son, he a son. It was rocky from the get go but I stayed stong. I knew he loved me, but both children were artists at stirring things up. Mine was no angel as I found out later. That was where I believe he started drifting away. I went to others for advice and got the same thing. He's no good, he's having an affair. Bottom line, get rid of him. Well, I never had that chance. He died several months later. He never complained about illnesses. He did get dizzy and sometimes would pass out. In those days doctors dismissed it as he was drinking and smoking too much. Problem was he hardly drank but every now and then he would tie one on and never smoked. at the funeral his very close (single)friends paid their respects. One that I was also very close to I pulled aside and had to ask if he knew of my husband having an affair. In no uncertain terms he stated no way. He did like to look and flirt as you put it but while they were out all he talked about was me and the kids. But he also felt that he was not part of the family that I brought into the marriage. He said that I spent alot of my time treating my son like an adult while brushing my husband off to the side, My parents were domineering and like to controll things. My son ran to them if he looked sideways at him. Of course, I had to hear about it. He also stated that he thought my husband had been sick and in alot of pain for some time because he did see him go through changes. He would tell them about his pain but did not want to worry me. His joking around came less and less. His mind was always racing thouugh all kinds of things going on. They joked that it was my nagging causing this and wrote it off as such. While cleaning out his things i came upon some things. He was always trying to make things better for me and the kids. He was working more hours, taking odd jobs around town, he was pawning and selling some of his things that i knew at least he held dear at one time. This was all found through receipts and notes. He had planned a getaway with the family. It was all there in black and white. All this through what I found even later what must have been excruciating pain. I;m not going to bore you with more. I found notes and cards to me that he never gave me. They would go on and on about how much he loved me, his hapiness with me, his fears of the future. He had always had a hard time saying his thoughts. These letters were poetry. I do want you to get one thing out of my mistake. You know this man more than any of us do. At least I would hope. Take a good look into his soul. I knew what was in my husbands soul because that was why I married him faults and all. He loved God, his family, and his friends. Yes he drank every now and then and would overdo it the same as yours. He was a flirt and I knew it. He flirted with everyone young and old, pretty and not so pretty. That was part of his charm. Again, that was a reason why i married him. Everyone loved him. That church was packed. Now all I have are the lovely memories of him and the one nightmare that wakes me up often. I listened to others that did not know him the way I did. You get a second chance to look through your eyes and heart and not through others.

That doesn't sound like it is fun at all! There are special mouthwashes that they give chemo patients to help relieve the pain of mouth sores. I'm not sure if they are prescription, but you might check with your pharmacist. He can at least give you some advice. Wishing you well.

I would definitely call the doctor today--there must be a doctor on call. DH's cousin is just getting over a case of shingles in the mouth. She was in tremendous pain with that. Your problem could be any number of things, and if you can't get in to see a doctor today, you should go to the emergency room. Good luck and keep us posted. Hugs!

It sure fits the symptoms of thrush - look it up on google and see if your symptoms match. If you have thrush, you need to go to the doctor.

Thrush is caused by forms of a fungus called Candida. This site explains the infection:

That is what happens to me if I eat celery, bananas, or pineapple. Not fun, and takes a long time to heal.

You poor thing! That must be awful. I too would call the doctor, ask if he can call something in for you or see you now so that you don't have to go thru this all weekend. When I was reading your post I kept thinking that it almost sounds systemic, please get it checked, we don't want you sick!

Thanks, kiddos. I figured that I was going to be at the clinic for my 2:00 apt with the Urologist (yes, I'm having problems at both ends. damn) so I called and got a 1:30 appt with the On-call Dr. I'll let you all know what I find out.

OOOh, I feel so sorry for you. When I was younger, I had a serious gum infection, it really hurt and laid me low. Had to have a molar pulled, that cured it. Now, in my senior years, I am very careful with my teeth. Brush and floss twice a day, see my dentist regularly. My hubby is going thru a bad patch with his teeth right now. Waiting for money from my late Mothe's estate to pay for extensive dental work we are sure he needs. Our regular dentist already did Xrays and says he needs 2 teeth pulled due to cracked roots.

I agree it does sound like Thrush which is no fun. Maybe you could have them call in the medication for Thrush for you.Things that do help are acidophilus you can buy them with out a script over the counter so you could go ahead and start that, and many milk type products come with it. Also a good yogurt that has active ingredients can help re-balance the flora (preferably not sweet since sugar feeds the yeast).
Thrush is basically a type of yeast infection, it happens often in people with diabetes or people taking certain types of meds. I have had it a couple of times and they gave me some medication to put in my mouth(nystatin) and I ate a lot of yogurt. Rinsing with a peroxide solution is also good as is salt water.
(Thrush is a yeast infection of the mucus membrane lining of the mouth and tongue.)

Since you wear dentures it could have spread to them so make sure you clean them really well and soak them in a good cleansing solution. It would be a good time to change toothbrushes also because they can also harbor it. I change toothbrushes often and I also soak it in alcohol about once a week.

well, it isn't Thrush. I have a number of ulcers. Why, hasn't been determined yet. She took swabbing and sent it to the Lab for analysis. In the meanwhile she started me on anti-biotic and some stuff to swab on for the pain, that is stronger and longer lasting than Anbesol. I'm to leave the dentures out except when eating, so air can get to the sores. As for the other end....again he took samples and will let me know. Its called Hurry up and wait. LOL

That's an interesting disease at the other end, dot mom ... hope something you can get will hurry up and heal it ... and same for the top end.

jannie - do you have a dental school nearby? If they would take hubby on as a patient - major savings.

They pulled several teeth in one quadrant of my mouth, one day about five years ago, at $32.00 for the first tooth and $16.00 for each of the subsequent 4 in that quadrant: $96.00 for five teeth ...

... and when my Asiatic Indian female student with the gentle hands was figuring out the total, I said it early on, and when she had it figured, asked how I'd figured it so quickly.

The original pull was 32, and four x 16 = 2 x 32 ... then 3 times $30 is $90 ... and 3 times $2 is $6: total $96. Calculated by whatever method: cheaper than a regular dentist - and overseen carefully.

About a year and a half ago I started having sores come up in my mouth. One morning it hurt so bad I couldn't eat and the worst one was under my tongue in the soft fleshy part. My tongue also felt swollen and I felt like I couldn't talk without a lisp sound. To make a long story shorter - I went back to my dentist since I had just had a crown put in the week before, then to an oral surgeon, my Primary care doctor, and an ENT. Basically they called it Geopgraphical Mouth or Burning Tongue. I was told to avoid spicy foods, salty foods, acid foods, increae my water intake, was given a couple different types of mouth rinses ( both had an antibotic in it with a little Bendryl, fungal medicine.) The places would come and go and it took about 6 months for me to feel that I was not having breakouts. Now I occasionally can feel a spot or two come up. I found using Biotene, which is also a rinse for dry mouth really helped as did drinking lots of water.
About the same time I had a severe allergic reaction one night - my eye swelled to the size of a baseball. I ended up in the hospital cause I said that it all seem to start with a sense of pressure in my chest. Two days later and several tests - my heart is okay except but they did find my potassium level to be low and my cholestrol a little high. I have since lost 25 lbs and changed my diet - excerise more.

Back to the mouth - I was told it was viral - that it will come and go - not contagious - and there isn't really anything to do except treat the symptoms. I agree the sores hurt like .... especially on the roof of the mouth and in the fleshy part.

Interestingly enough since I do have dry mouth - I tend to have lots of dental issues with decay. When I had a tooth pulled this past Jan. because the decay was above the gum line and couldn't be saved- the oral surgeon told me a few cases he has had that were similiar with the sores. He says I am not allergic to all the metal in my mouth but since I have so much, its like I have a little electrical current going on and that it keeps the mouth irritated. Then certain foods, changes in body chemistry ( and he mentioned calicum and potasium in particualr) and dehydration seem to start flareups. Don't know who to believe but I can relate. Try the Biotene - it also comes in gum, spray, and toothpaste.

Glad you got to the doctor today. I'm sure you'll be feeling better in a day or two. Why do we put these things off. I do the same thing all the time. I have to suffer a few days before I go to the Dr. meanwhile I could have been on the road to recovery. I always think it will go away on its own.

Are you using a paste for your dentures?

I read a couple of years ago that it was bad for the mouth and to use the powder
I use super Poligrip (mentioned in the article.) as good
After soaking / cleaning the plate and rinsing well I apply a small amt of powder mainly to the front end then shake the excess off on a paper towel then dip them in some warm water and stick in my mouth. It will last all day and no messy sticky stuff to deal with. I've been taking them out for a bit at night to relax my mouth
Also some of the Kanka products are good too

Mboston, wow, you sure went through your times of misery, I'm going to look into Biotene today.
Georgysmom, I am guilty about putting things off, health wise. I guess I'm always afraid they are going to tell me there is nothing wrong....then I get so miserable, I have no choice.
Minnie, I have used Fixodent for years. I've wondered bout the powders, but thought they might get gooey.
As for the stuff they prescribed for the pain. It is Lidocaine Hydrochlorine Oral Topical Solution. It doesn't last much longer than Anbusol. So I'll keep applying it because the sores hurt a whole lot. The Dr said to keep the dentures out except for eating. So I'm doing that. I sure hope this heals up soon.

Dot, could you eat soft foods and not wear them for a few days? Jello, soup, small, soft pasta? I guess that would pretty tough but it might help with the pain and the healing. Or does hurt to eat?

I wonder if they changed the Fixodent formula? I've had that happen to me with things I used for years and suddenly I reacted to them.

Dot I think it will heal up soon give it time. The hard part is keeping the tongue from exploring that part of the mouth
I've founf that some of the Colgate Orabase products are good a litle bit to soothe the area and not a shocker to the area

Don't mess around. That needs attention as soon as possible. Hopefully, it's a chemical irritation from possibly the denture creme, but there's that nasty cold sore - that maybe related. If you see white spots, look up "thrush".

A sore mouth is no fun, and it makes one grouchy as well.

I;m sorry if my statement was taken wrong. About nothing wrong. I have a few acquaintances and relatives, who have the need to tell anyone within listening distance about every ache pain, twitch, and seem to run to the Dr with said 'ailments' only to have the Dr tell them it's nothing. I don't want to look like a hypochondriac, and waste peoples time. Hubs and I do try to take care of our ailments at home first, then if that doesn't work, go see the Dr. Of course, no one wants to hear bad news from the Dr, and when tey have to go see him/her, it will be nothing or nothing serious. Sorry if I offended anyone, I know there are some of our group battling serious problems. My sore mouth isn't serious (I hope) just dang miserable.

Dotmom- I know exactly what you mean. I think I should know more about my body than I do. I'm also afraid of looking like a hypochondriac, but I have an autoimmune disease (and am quite well despite it) and thus I am also afraid that I won't report something significant!

Dotmom, sores like you have in your mouth may simply be painful right now but if untreated they could become infected and lead to very serious problems. I'm glad you got to a physician for treatment. And I know what you mean as well, I too am afraid of appearing to be crying wolf! How are you feeling today?

Have you been around little kids lately? It could also be something called Coxsackie virus which causes mouth ulcers - my daughter had it when she was small and I got then got it but not as bad as she did - it's miserable for sure. Good luck and I hope you get a quick resolution.
