Just Back From a Cruise and then........

We returned this morning from a wonderful 8 day cruise on the Carnival Freedom. The day we left, our water heater burst as we were going out the door! Kids were in charge of getting a new one and did a great job! Today, as we landed and were leaving the ship, I had a text message letting us know that our house flooded while we were away!! The wood floors are all ruined and have buckled. The smell in the house is really bad...We'll have to call Homeowners Insurance in the morning. The problem was the ice dispenser...it went on and on and on. Kids called in a repair guy and he said that some wire went out and it didn't let the ice maker know not to make more ice!!

So sorry to hear this has happened to you. We always shut off our water when going away.

What a bummer to come home to such a mess. My husband's brother & his wife had the same exact thing happen a couple years ago. Luckily they were only gone for the day.

Hope you needed new floors!!??

Heres what you missed "FRUITA ORCHARDS PHOTOVisitors of Capitol Reef are often curious about the orchards that lie within a mile or two of the Visitor Center. These trees are the most obvious remnant of the pioneer community of Fruita, which was settled in 1880. Usually no more than 10 families lived in Fruita at any one time, and the last resident moved away in 1969. Early settlers planted the orchards to insure subsistence. Today, the orchards are preserved and protected as a Rural Historic Landscape. Deedles- You can mix roosters! It's a bit of a theme, so they don't all have to match, at least that my opinion. I'll be mixing my bunnies in with some chickadees and that seems to work, because of the backsplash tiles. Actually, I like the wood tone that you have around your sink, now. At least what's in the picture. Not too light or dark and it doesn't look too formal. This is going to have a country/vintage feel to it, so you don't want to do anything that gets too fancy or formal. I like the yellow that's in the kitchen I posted above and that has a similar wood tone. Not exact, but similar. The nice thing about a soft yellow is that if it's not too pale, you can mix in some brighter yellows and even gold, depending on what you find for fabrics and accessories. And those items are what's going to make your kitchen really work. The wallpaper is great, but you have to continue that idea with your other accessories and fabrics. Do you have room for a table and chairs in your new kitchen? Any stools? An island? Lots of windows? Display shelves? These all give you great areas to bring in more fun items and colors. You'll be fine as long as you stick to your main colors and keep focused on your theme. I'd say 1930s to 1950s vintage farm kitchen...but you know more than I do, what look you're going for :) Oh, and I have no problem with you creating a new thread. The 'clown vomit' title is funny, but now that you're getting a better idea of what you want...I think the new thread is a good idea.

Good morning, y'all, . Thank you for the kind words, Mike. Laura, I will definitely hit you if I ever head towards Annapolis :). And thanks to all of you for the well wishes for Dave. It means more than you know. . He's better, I think. He's starting to be hungry again, and he now eats 3 meals a day. Granted, they are much smaller meals than what he used to have, and they are almost fat free, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. We haven't had any setbacks since he left the hospital, so I must be doing something right in what I feed him. We are scheduled to go see some big wig at Hopkins that is specializing n Pancreatitis, so we'll see what he tells us. . The trees have been spending their days outside (except yesterday since temps were in the friggin 40's), but I've chickened out on the nights when I saw it go below 50 this week, so I brought them back in for the nights. As soon as it's steadily staying above 55, I'll just leave them out 24/7. I can't wait for that, either. I am so sick of that rain and constant drizzle and cold. I need some sunshine at least as much as my trees do. . I've also just finished giving them their first feed since last October when I brought them in for the winter, and their very first FP feed, since we decided to stop giving them the organic Grow More fertilizer I gave them last year. I've fumbled a little with the strenght to give them, and figured out 1/4 Tbsp for 1/2 gallon, as described in THIS POST I intend to use the "mikerno-approved method", and feed them every day about 10 minutes after their daily watering. I was uncertain of my FP per gallon proportions, so I decided to start low at 1/4 Tbsp / 1/2 gallon (1/2 gallon being the volume of my "fertilitzer pitcher"). . I haven't seen any scales appear back, but that doesn't mean squat, I still have to redo the Neem oil next week (Tuesday will be a week since my last application), and then the week after that, again. . I'm sorry I'm not contributing more to these boards, these days. It's just that by the time I'm done with all I have to do, I'm so drained and bone deep exhausted that I can't summon the energy to actually "write" anything. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this, especially after such a wonderful trip.

But hearing about your ice maker just reinforces what I've been doing for years and the rest of my family thinks I'm nuts. If I'm going away for a few days but the kids are still using the house we obviously leave the water on - but I still remove the ice tray from the ice maker so that it doesn't automatically refill. One morning I opened the freezer to get ice and noticed the bucket was filled solid with ice - the lever that makes the ice trays turn and dump out the ice had broken and the water went into the bucket and froze. Had we been away we would have had the same disaster you're dealing with.

I hope your insurance company is quick and you get everything repaired soon.

I am so sorry. What a disaster to return home to. I hope you are able to get everything repaired quickly, and have no problems with insurance.

The manual for our refrigerator says to turn off the icemaker if you will be away for a few days. The fact that they put that warning in the manual tells me that you are not the first one to have this problem.

Oh no. This happened to a friend of mine a few months ago. Thank goodness her house keeper went into the house or the damage would have been even worse. A pipe burst in an upstairs bathroom and it was like Niagara Falls in there for a couple days. Half the house was ruined.

They had to have professionals come in and dry the place out before rebuilding could begin. The damage was unbelievable.

Good tip about the ice maker. If my son checks the house frequently I leave the water on, but it wouldn't take long for the ice maker to go kerflooey. I also take the ice bin out when the power goes out. The ice melts and runs out through the door onto the floor.

wow..never have had an ice maker, and that sure makes me glad! wll pass this info on though..3 of my kids have them!

Trust me...we learned a lesson...never, ever leave your water on when you're gone for a day! Our floors were pulled out tonight and we have fans blowing all over the place. Kitchen cabinets are being pulled, all moldings, etc will be pulled. It's a nightmare! So learn from our experience...never, ever leave water on when you go away!

Oh, I am so sorry! What a mess to have to deal with just coming off a great vacation!

(Note to self - turn off water the next time we go somewhere...)

This actually can happen just when you go to work, my in law's kitchen was damaged like that just from the water leaking from their dishwasher while they are away at work. They entire kitchen had to be gutted! GAH! I always do turn off the water if I go even over night but this still is not a guarantee.

Oh my.... so sorry you had to come home to that....we had a similar thing happen at our home on the river....I don't envy you at all.....
