What did you do when you turned 50 ?

I am turning 50 in Feb and have started thinking about something special to do, that I will love doing and remember fondly.

Just wondering if other people did something special, apart from having a party, when they turned 50 ?

I went on a trip to Savannah, Georgia with my friend. Because of scheduling, we couldn't go until long after my birthday, but that was a gift to me... and I loved it.

I did nothing special, can't really remember it as I was busy as always. I had a young daughter that was 9 years old at the time.

I did some more research on the Portage, Wisconsin, municipal composting operation. They are using a steel drum that is 11 feet diameter by 120 feet long, almost horizontal, with a three degree tilt. It rotates at 1 rpm, or 60 turns per hour. The inputs are solid municipal waste that has been sorted to some degree, plus a controlled amount of sewage effluent. The process takes two weeks to be completed. Temperature of 140 degrees F is achieved. They call the product compost, but they don't sell it or give it away, because it can contain broken glass. The compost they produce goes on a local landfill. The main purpose of this operation is to reduce the volume of waste going into the landfill, so the landfill can be used for a longer period of time. Since the product of this operation is not considered to be fit for use in a garden or on a farmer's field, I'm not sure if it should be called compost.

That story originated about 7 years ago - things move sort of slowly over on "Household Finances". I guess most folks on these sites are fairly financially savvy, as it is. Here's a suggestion: pick up a $50.00 bill and a paper clip, and paper clip the bill to the end sheet on the roll of toilet paper in the main bathroom, and keep replacing it, moving it back as the paper gets used. For about, say - a week? That should remind you to be careful of those dollars - not flush 'em down the old john! Or ... maybe you'd get the message after about three days? Don't follow such a plan, though, if someone in your house (or a guest) may grab the bill ... ... and manage to have it disappear! If you want to preserve stuff on KT - good luck! Most things fall over the edge of the abyss after a couple of months - or three, at the outside. Also, a question: if they've been saved to archive, do they stick around, or do they disappear when the original thread dies? Hope you all have a fine week - what's left of it! I'm off to church in the morning to prepare income tax returns for low income folks. I expect to do it on paper, and some others do it electronically - several don't want to deal with me, for refunds come back quicker from electronic filing. ole joyful

If you read the literature, they are basically describing a two speed motor that uses a run capacitor which improves the low speed efficiency. A.O. Smith now sells two speed motors with run capacitors and they claim the efficiency is about 20% better. Some of the other manufactures may start to use these new two speed motors. The Whisperflo 1 HP full rated pump will use about 380 watts on low speed with a flow rate of 42 GPM. On the same plumbing, their 1 HP full rated pump would deliver about 42 GPM at 320 watts or about 20% more efficient which is about what A.O.Smith is claiming.

@ justmetoo----His now 21 year old son assaulted me, not the one that lives with us now. His mother does feed him stories and has for years let them in on the finances and done everything in her power to cause trouble and discontent. To be honest, in my opinion, this all went off the rails with this particular child when WE bought him a car. After my husband and I did this he kept the ca for about 2 months and decided that he didn't want it anymore. I had a truck that we were not using so SS came to me and said he wanted to buy it because, a. he wanted a truck, b. it would teach him what it was like to have financial responsibility. I should have seen through that right there, because I don't know many kids that would say that. I was honestly against it because I saw nothing but trouble, but after all the hounding I got from my husband and SS, I gave in just to shut them up. I stipulated that there would be rules, the vehicle would not be his until he paid it in full, it could not be driven out of the local area further than 50 miles, and since it was in my name and under my insurance he was not to haul all his friends around and he had to let us know where he was going. Keep in mind at the time he was 16, so I don't think I was being to unreasonable. That was fine for about 2 months and suddenly he stopped paying (payments were $50/month), breaking curfew, rude, sassy, etc. He wants to put the vehicle under his mothers insurance, because she doesn't have to know where he goes. Then he decides he doesn't want this vehicle and he wants to sell it and buy something else. Now I have no way of knowing what my husband and his son discussed or concocted, and they are famous for making little deals and leaving me out of the loop. (That's another issue) So, I agreed to allow him to sell it with the stipulation that he only keep what was leftover from what he owed us because I just wanted to be rid of the situation.. Well you would have thought I was asking for his first born, because suddenly he doesn't understand why he has to pay for something that had been given to me in the first place and why did I not just give him the vehicle. So he sells it and when my husband does not turn over the full amount to him, he says, "Mom told me you would not give me what you owed me!" HAHA BINGO! So I told my husband, BM is obviously planting seeds in his head, which you can't reason with this woman she is a nut job, we have tried. He gets a new car with his mother and adds it to his insurance and in even more attitude, he came over one night to fight with my husband about this entire transaction. Do I know if my husband has lied to him? No, I do not, however that is no excuse to talk to your father that way. In my opinion, bottom line SS is mad because he did not get what he wanted from us. This is the same child that asked his Dad to change the custody agreement so that he could stay with us more because he did not like living at his mothers house because everyone fights there all the time, per him. My husband even gave him $400 to register his new car that he got with his BM with the understanding that he would pay it back because he is working. This was 6 months ago and the boy has yet to make any attempt to give us anything, in fact he told his Dad in the past few weeks, "I don't have any F*&^ing money, so why would I give you any? I'm not paying you back." NICE! My husband left his son OVER $300 for lunch, food, etc whilst he has been away, gives him money to eat when the SS is at work, school, to go out with his friends....but the boy has a job, he is already in college. I feel that we have done so much for him and all he does in expect more and disrespect more. He will walk right past me in my home and look right through me and not say a word. I feel that I have done more for him in the 5 years I have been married than his own mother does for him. Its just a mess and it makes me very sad because it was NOT always like this. We used to do things as a family, have dinner together, go on trips and now I can't stand the sight of him.

Okay turning 50 sucked for me. 2 weeks after I found out i had cancer, then complications from the surgery. Had to have my dog put to sleep and now more complications. It's not been a fun year. BUT I'm still here and kicking.

On the other hand my SIL is going to sky dive this weekend or next to celebrate turning 50

Since I had a stroke at age 48, and also made a full recovery, I celebrated my 50th with a huge cake at work.

I had a GREAT time. Convinced my husband that I "REALLY" want to plan and carry out my own ideas.

Invited my family and a handful of very good friends to a lunch at my house.

Both my sisters, and both my daughters came, and we were 5 cooks, that had a blast.

Then, two days later a lot of my biking buddies came for a 50 mile bike ride.

I took 2 of my best friends and we bar-hopped and ate lots of good food in a little historical district and stayed in a B&B (which DH paid for as my gift). Fun time!!

Must not have been very memorable, I haven't a clue. Didn't do anything for 60 either. Just another candle on the birthday cake.

This just happened a few months ago. Everyone treats me like I'm old. My gyn announced at THAT age I should have gone through menopause, took me off BC. Got my first colonoscopy. I quit my part time job, gained 10 lbs.

It was an OLD age bummer birthday. Hope yours is "fun"!

It was my last day in Paris after being there for three weeks. My best friend took me out for a special breakfast and then we got on a flight to London for another week. It helped soothe the blow of turning 50 which is the first birthday that I really dreaded.

Party at work and a cookout put on by friends complete with a black sequined top hat with a big "50" on it and lots of black decorations. Sure glad it was so much fun since it's been downhill for birthdays since then! About all we do now is go out for dinner.

I like the idea of getting away, even it's for a long weekend.

Went skydiving again (first time was at 35). Took my DH this time and he enjoyed it as well.

My then DH gave me a huge surprise party at our country club, friends and relatives, with a dinner dance and a DJ who played 50's and 60's music for dancing.

I just turned 50 this summer and didn't really do anything. My cousin, however, was taken to Paris by her husband for a week and then spent another week in Venice. (sigh). I do love my hubby and appreciate that he is good to me every day of the year but it would be nice to have a surprise every now and again!

I can so relate (and it's not just DH, but other family too)... that is why I planned both a small get together for my 40th and my girl's night out for my 50th. I wasn't going to sit and do nothing on my milestone birthdays... which is what would have happened if I had left it up to others. Not trying to sound ungrateful... they are nice people.. birthday surprises/ parties/planned trips are just not something they do.

I had a family reunion/group birthday party. I was turning 50, one goddaughter 21, one 3, granddaughter 1. We had a great time.

I just turned 48, feel so old already. I want to go back to Italy someday so maybe I'll take a trip there for my 50th. I want to see the southern part of Italy this time too.

i've got 7 more yrs to plan but i already know that i want to spend the entire 12 months traveling around the world, hopefully by then i will have already done a bunch more. some w/ DH, some w/ friends, some w/ family and some w/ my niece & nephew. i am ALL about rewarding myself for hard work so a major purchase will also be in order :-) ~ liz

I planned a trip to Ireland, then bagged it in favor of taking Chloe to DisneyWorld while she was still young enough to believe in the magic. Good choice.

Obviously I had my first Senior Moment that day, because I don't remember it.

I am sure though that I would have gotten gifts and a cake. That was just status quo.

Senior Moments have gotten a lot more numerous now.

I didn't want a big party and decided I wanted to go with DH to a memorable place in a state I'd never been to. So we went to the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina. We stayed there for a few days and DH surprised me by flying my brother in to spend my birthday with me. Then when we arrived back home DH and some friends had arranged an all day/night surprise party with some of my closest friends from around the COUNTRY. Though I said I didn't want a party it was very nice and very fun to have all my good friends meet each other for the first time.

I had a nasty case of Mycoplasma pneumonia and spent most of the week in bed with a fever, headache, coughing spells and sweating so much I had to lay on beach towels.

My only memory of my actual birthday is when one of the kids came to check on me and said "So I guess this means we don't get birthday cake?" Thankfully he was joking.

My DH had our jeweler custom make a beautiful sapphire ring but he wisely opted to save it until I felt better. But he did tell me on my birthday that he had a present for me and I was so ill I just didn't care.

We celebrated a month later with my younger brother and his wife and had a wonderful evening.

My husband & I had never been to the Pacific Northwest, so for my 50th Brthday, we took a plane up to Seattle, spent several days at a very nice B&B there, then rented a car & explored the adjacent areas. My actual "50th birthday dinner" was spent at a non-descript Chinese restaurant in Seattle---we were too tired from sightseeing that evening to spend time hunting out something "special", but the overall trip was memorable.

That's been such a long time ago, I really don't remember, but am pretty sure nothing special happened. We did have a party three years ago, when I turned 75. The next big one will be 80, I guess. Maybe I'll get brave and go sky-diving. :>)

My husband had a surprise birthday party for me at the campground where we went to back then. He also had my brother and sister-in-law flown in for the event to surprise me too. Had both my daughters, grandkids, SIL, and my husband sisters and their famlies and mil and close friends there too. We really had a good time and boy was I surprised!

Just another day for me, DH gave me a card and probably a small gift, otherwise I don't remember anything about it.

It has been a long time ago......can't remember specifically but usually DH plans a trip for my birthday.......sometimes just up the coast but not always.

Well thanks for the replies, guys. I think I will pass on the skydiving !! Although I was thinking I should do something really adventurous and stop being a wuss.

Reading all the posts did make me realize it is best to do something memorable and not just make it another boring day.

I love the hubbies who organised events, what treasures they are.

I don't remember doing anything special but that might have been the year I got a tat.

I don't really pay that much attention to my birthdays. The only one that ever made me sad was my 20th. Leaving my teens behind made me feel so dam old. LOL

My daughter flew me to AZ to celebrate my 80th with half a dozen family, though - and we had a glorious time!

We had just moved into the house we're in now two days before...I spent the day in our pool just lounging...and taking a day off from unpacking boxes...We went out to dinner that night...My kids had gotten me a huge glass mug that said..."How the hell did 50 sneak up on me?"...I drank my usual sweet tea from it!! (and then passed it on to another family member who turned 50 the next year and it keeps getting passed around now!)

My Dad looked so forward to have his 50th
but he died at 49.

Well...i turn 50 next year and I already know what i am going to do.

I have always said that when I turn 50 I was going to get a tatoo. Figured that would be a great day to do it.

I am getting the Triquatra (Charmed symbol) on my shoulder (just a small one) and if there is any ink left over I am getting 1692 tatooed somewhere else at is not noticeable.

I still have about 18 months to decide. I KNOW I do not want a party. I'd love to take my kids and granddaughter to some nice all inclusive and spend some time on the beach lounging. Just don't know if I could stand them for an entire week.....LOL!!!
