I haven't used Vonage, or Magic Jack either. Basically what I've read on it is that it's not much improved since I used VOIP. I used to use a couple of the VOIP (internet) phone services and it was ok for chitchat with people you know but I wouldn't use it for a professional call or anything. The clarity was good, but had a delay, I imagine that would be much less now though.
I just don't make that many long distance calls so I just use my prepaid cell for them when I need to make a call. I use instant mesenger, Skype and email for so much of my communication. Speaking of which, I have heard several people talk more highly of Skype and I know several of the TV stations use Skype for communication with reporters in the field. Not sure how they compare in cost but might be something to look into. I wouldn't sign up for anything long term with any of them. I'd want to try them out before committing to it. You could set it up as a second line and try it out for a while to get a real feel for it, then drop the one you choose when you decide. If you make a lot of long distance calls you could use "line 2" and if you need clarity, if it doesn't provide it, you'd still have that option. There's differing opinions on the clarity from what I've read so I wonder if it makes a difference with your ISP, modem and other variables. It would seem that it would. Guess a lot depends on how many long distance calls you make.
Hope some people respond with experience with it.
BTW, FYI, from what I've read, Vonage does work with 911 systems for identification but you need to set it up for it to work. Also of course if your ISP goes down during power outages, you'll be out of a phone for that time too. I'm told they can forward your calls to an alternate number, like a cell if you want.
I have used skype a lot when DD was in Ukraine, and it worked really well for the most part. And it was free, which was amazing. I wonder how long that will continue. I think internet based phone services will be the wave of the future, and it certainly looks really economical. Not sure it's for us at this time, though. Hope more people have some thoughts to share.
I had it for about 3 years and it was fine. Only problem was that when the internet went down (which used to happen a lot more then than it does now) you'd lose phone service as well.
I killed it about 2 years ago. We all have cell phones and the only calls I got on the land line were nuisance calls. I put a message on my vonage phone to call my cell or email me (figuring if anyone who actually knew me needed me, they'd have one or the other) and about 4 months later had it disconnected. Never regretted it.
But to answer your question, I found vonnage to be just fine.
I have Vonage for my business phones and love it. One thing that people don't realize is that it comes configured to use a smallish amount of bandwidth, but you can allow it to use more, which improves the sound. I can't tell the difference between my Vonage line and a "regular" phone line.
Where I live, lots of people have phone service through Comcast, which is also VOIP, though it costs more.
One thing I *love* about Vonage is their visual voicemail. For a fee, I have all my business messages transcribed and emailed to me. (You can have them sent by text, too.) I can read them while I'm in court, then print them out to put in the client files. SO GREAT!
